ISABELLA's POV
For a moment, I tried to avoid his gaze, hoping to blend into the sea of faces. But it was too late. He had already seen me, and a mixture of surprise and curiosity crossed his face.
Lucas excused himself from the blonde clinging to his arm and made his way towards me. I felt a flutter in my chest as he approached, but then I remembered that Andrei was by my side. I straightened my shoulders and stood taller, feeling a surge of confidence.
As Lucas reached us, his eyes roamed over me, taking in my dress and my hair. I could sense Andrei's anger rising, his jaw clenched and his eyes narrowing.
"Lucas," Andrei said, his voice low and menacing. "I don't think you've been introduced to my date for the evening."
Lucas' eyes flicked to Andrei, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flash of anger. But then, his expression smoothed out, and he smiled.
"Isabella, you look stunning," Lucas said, his voice dripping with insincerity. "I didn't know you were...moving on so quickly."
I raised an eyebrow, feeling a surge of indignation. "You're one to talk, Lucas," I said, my voice cool. "I see you've already found a replacement for me". And a blonde, no less. I should have known you always had a type."
Lucas' face reddened, and he took a step forward, but Andrei intervened, his hand on Lucas' chest.
"I think it's time for you to leave, Lucas," Andrei said, his voice firm. "Isabella is with me now, and I will not have you harassing her."
Lucas' eyes flashed with anger, but he knew better than to cross Andrei, though I think this little show of his has more than crossed Andrei. He turned and stormed off, leaving his blonde date looking confused and abandoned.
As we watched Lucas disappear into the crowd, Andrei turned to me and smiled. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice low and concerned with a hint of anger still etched into his tone.
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. "Yes, I'm fine," I said. "Thank you for stepping in."
Andrei's eyes locked onto mine, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. "I'll always protect you, Isabella," he said, his voice low and husky. "You're mine now."
I swallowed and moved to grab a drink from a passing server's tray. I down everything in one gulp. The drink burns a little, but it successfully calms my nerves.
Andrei's phone rings, and he picks up. He listens to the caller for a few seconds and curses, "That fucker!"
"We need to leave now", he places his hand on my back and gently leads me towards what I assume to be the back entrance. We get out of the building and the cold night air hits my face. "I will be home shortly, be good", he plants a kiss on my head and gently pushes me into the car. The car pulls out of the compound and onto the main road.
There was little traffic on the road and i decided to talk to the driver. Who knows, he could help me escape later.
"Hi, I'm Isabella, what's your name?", he did not respond or show any sign of hearing me, so I leaned forward and realized that he had earphones plugged in.
If he did not hear me talking to him, would he hear me slip out of the car? This is very dangerous, and I could lose my life, but instead of overthinking it and getting discouraged, I unlock the door from my side, open the door gently and step out.
How do I shut the door without risking him hearing? Just then, a car honks and I seize the opportunity to shut the door.
I picked up my dress and ran as fast as I could between cars and lanes until I got to the sidewalk. I did not stop running until I was sure I had left the car and its oblivious driver far behind. Finally, I slowed down to catch my breath and looked around to get my bearings. I was in an unfamiliar part of town, but I'll think about that later. I'm free.
