I got home early from work today. My human job, that is. I work as a forester at the department for agriculture, forestery and water management of the municipality.
Today, I had to go deep into the forest to go and check on a population of pine trees that had suffered from a virus last year. It's a 3.5 hour hike one way mostly off road, an hour of taking pictures and samples, and 3.5 hours back. For a human, that is. For my wolf, it's a 40min run, 60 minutes if I take a longer way with better cover.
I had thought that my day was over at lunch time, and I made a couple more friends at the office. Most humans aren't excited about such tasks, great way to make friends for me by pretending to be helpful. Which is by the way the reason I do this job - I am the eyes and ears in the municipality for my pack.
There had been weird incidents in the last couple months, that made big headlines in the human world. People appearing at hospitals with strange wounds, without any idea what had happened to them. Missing limbs, internal bleedings, one human even had the entire arm torn off. But no memories of an accident, no neuroactive substances or history of psychological issues. No logical explanation and humans don't like that.
That can be problematic for us wolfs. Considering the enormous growth in population and the rise of the internet after the second world war, it has been more and more difficult for us to stay hidden. Not only for us, but also for all the other creatures that humans would refer to as "magical". Therefore, each community sends out spies into the human world, to keep their eyes and ears open for hints of the supernatural and clean up once something happens. The cleaning up part, that's why I need friends. It would be odd if it is always the same bunch of people coming up with weird explanations. So I always drop a few hints with different people, to steer the story.
Anyways, I got home and made myself lunch. A whole chicken with potatoes, baked in the oven seasoned with olive oil, salt, pepper, lemon zest and rosemary. It smelled delicious and I was starving. Just as I was about to sit down, I heard a noise. I didn't know what it was, very high and very loud, I could probably only hear it thanks to my wolve hearing. I followed it, it came form the room of my tenant Aisha.
After banging the door for a while, she opened, seemed disturbed. I have been having my eyes on her for a while now, something is off with this one and I don't know what.
She lives like a human, looks like one, smells like one too. Pretty, I had even asked her out once, but she said she doesn't date. I don't believe her, comes home smelling like men often enough, probably just not comfortable having s*x with her landlord, which is probably better anyway.
But then there were the noises, the migraines and sometimes she disappears randomly. Weirdly enough, this often correlated with other occurences in the human world. I sighed, I guess I had to go back to the municipality this afternoon to listen around. I mindlinked my alpha to update him and went back to my chicken.
