Jenna was constantly on her feet at Amber Coffee House, barely having a moment to breathe.
That afternoon, the shop received a large order. There were so many items that the manager specifically asked Jenna to accompany the delivery person.
After completing the delivery, she saw Lucas.
Suppressing the surge of emotions in her chest, she spoke in a professional tone. "All three hundred cups of coffee you ordered have been delivered."
She turned to leave immediately.
"Jenna!" Lucas hurried after her, grabbing her wrist. His voice carried an edge of vulnerability. "I just wanted to show you my company, to convince you to work here. Jenna, please don't be so cold to me."
Jenna jerked her hand free. Years of pent-up anger surged through her, and her voice was sharp with sarcasm. "So how should I treat you? With gratitude? Thank you for personally sending me to Oakridge Correctional Facility?"
Lucas went pale, quickly trying to explain. "Stella was pregnant at the time. She begged me to help her. Jen, I…"
"Don't call me that!" Jenna cut him off, her eyes icy.
She took a deep breath, her tone returning to detached calm. "Lucas, you got everything you wanted. I'll have my own life too. Let's just pretend we never knew each other."
At that moment, the elevator dinged open. Jenna didn't glance back and walked straight in.
Lucas stared at her cold profile, his expression tangled with conflicting emotions. His voice was hoarse. "Jenna, what I…"
But his words were cut off as the elevator doors slowly closed, separating them completely.
Jenna felt her tense nerves ease slightly. Lucas had achieved the career success he had dreamed of.
After the college entrance exams, they had worked a whole summer, each saving up to buy the cheapest smartphones they could find.
The day she got her phone, Jenna had been thrilled. "Finally, I can play games! I've heard about Match Three and Honor of Kings; now I can try them myself."
Lucas had watched her with earnest eyes. "Jenna, one day I'll start my own game company. I'll make all kinds of fun games. You'll be the first to play."
Jenna teased with a smile. "Alright then, I'll be counting on you, Mr. Reed."
During university, they worked and studied relentlessly, earning scholarships. Their days were busy but filled with hope. They had promised to marry after graduation, save for a house, and build a home together.
Everything began to change when Lucas started an internship at a company.
Coincidentally, he and Jenna's roommate, Stella, were assigned to the same company.
Jenna, not very sociable, had relied on Stella to help her integrate into the dorm and social circles. They shared everything and had become best friends.
Jenna had specifically reminded them to support each other at work. At first, Lucas would mention Stella casually, saying she was lively and kind. Jenna smiled and agreed. "Yes, she's like a little sun."
But over time, Stella's name came up more and more in Lucas's stories, and he began coming home later and later.
Jenna felt an uneasy tug in her chest, a creeping sense of foreboding spreading quietly.
