Chapter 5 Frozen in Betrayal

550 Words
She screamed and lunged forward, trying to tear Jenna's hair. These days, Jenna's legs were weak, so she had brought a cane. She swung it hard into Stella's knee. Stella screamed in pain and collapsed to the floor. Jenna looked down at her, her voice dripping with cold scorn. "You're in such a rush to claim ownership, afraid Lucas is tired of you already?" She sneered, each word sharp enough to pierce the heart. "Oh, I forgot. He was the one you stole as your affair back then. Now you're so anxious, afraid someone else might do the same to you?" With that, Jenna leaned on her cane and walked into the shelter. Behind her, Stella's curses raged, but Jenna ignored them. Back then, Stella had been so skilled at pretending. She wore a bright, generous face while scheming behind the scenes. Now, all that remained was Stella's cruelty and arrogance. She even threw money around to drive people away. Perhaps it was Lucas's patience and affection that had waned, revealing Stella's true colors. Jenna bent over, bathing a stray cat, but footsteps still approached from behind. She assumed Stella hadn't left and spoke coldly. "What? Want another beating?" "Jen, what are you saying?" Jenna paused, then said lightly, "Nothing." Lucas stepped forward, concern threading his voice. "Did someone give you trouble just now?" Jenna's thoughts flickered briefly. 'You're the biggest trouble.' Her tone was calm, distant, each word precise. "Whether I have trouble or not really has nothing to do with you." Lucas didn't argue. Instead, he crouched beside her, holding a small device. "This is imported from overseas, meant to relieve leg pain. I've also contacted the best orthopedic doctor. Come with me to Riverbend Hospital. Maybe there's still hope for your leg." Jenna kept working with cold efficiency. "No." Lucas's grip on the device tightened for a moment, then he gently set it on a low cabinet. "The Oakridge Correctional Facility medical records should have your leg injury documented. I'll retrieve them so the doctor can prepare a treatment plan in advance." Jenna watched Lucas leave, unsure of his intentions. Was this a sudden pang of conscience, or another performance? She no longer cared. The years he had deceived her had already shown her the depth of his hypocrisy. After they married, Lucas started his business. For a while, it felt like the old sweet days had returned. Lucas treated her with attentive care, and Jenna slowly let go of her doubts. She naively believed his occasional distraction in love was harmless, that life would gradually return to normal. But this self-deception shattered completely on their wedding anniversary. That day, Jenna prepared a table full of his favorite dishes, yet Lucas never came home. The large apartment held only her and the cold food. It wasn't until the early hours that Lucas sent a single text. Lucas: Working late. Heartbroken, Jenna quietly ate the cold meal and suddenly suffered an acute gastrointestinal attack. She curled on the floor, stomach burning, calling Lucas over and over, but all she heard was the cold busy tone. With no other choice, she forced herself to Riverbend Hospital alone. She never expected that the moment she entered the emergency hall, she would witness a scene that made her blood run cold.
