The dream stayed with me.
Even after waking.
Even after morning prayers.
Even after Mass.
Even while I was helping around the parish.
That black wolf remained in the back of my mind.
It was always standing far away.
Always watching me.
And always looking sad.
I couldn’t understand it.
What was I missing?
Why did I wake up with this strange emptiness in my chest, as if something important had been taken away from me?
I had everything I had ever asked God for.
My family was alive.
I had an education.
I had the Church.
I had a purpose.
I had people who loved me.
So why did I feel like something was missing?
That morning, I finally decided to talk to Father Archie.
I found him after Mass.
“Father?”
He looked up.
“Yes, Sebastian?”
“Can I speak with you?”
“Of course.”
I followed him into his office.
I sat down.
For a moment, I didn’t know how to begin.
Then I finally said,
“I’ve been dreaming.”
Father Archie became attentive.
“What kind of dreams?”
“A wolf.”
His expression barely changed.
“A wolf?”
I nodded.
“Since the first day we went to the pack.”
He listened.
“Every night?”
“Almost.”
“What does it look like?”
I thought about it.
“It’s black.”
“Large?”
“Very large.”
“Does it frighten you?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Father Archie studied me.
“Then what does it do?”
“Sometimes it runs with me.”
His eyebrows lifted slightly.
“And sometimes?”
“It just looks at me.”
“How do you feel when you’re near it?”
I hesitated.
“Safe.”
Father Archie remained quiet.
“But lately,” I continued, “it looks sad.”
“Sad?”
“Very sad.”
I lowered my eyes.
“And when I wake up, I feel sad too.”
Father Archie didn’t laugh.
He didn’t dismiss me.
He simply listened.
“Dreams can come from many places,” he finally said. “Sometimes our minds process unfamiliar experiences while we sleep.”
“So you think it’s just because of the pack?”
“It could be.”
I nodded.
That explanation made sense.
At least somewhat.
He continued talking to me for a while, offering gentle suggestions.
Eventually, he gave me several tasks to complete for the parish.
I was grateful for the distraction.
I spent the morning preparing documents, organizing materials, and helping with church activities.
By noon, Father Archie returned.
“Sebastian.”
“Yes?”
“I need you to do something for me.”
“What?”
“I left some documents at the pack.”
He handed me a folder.
“They need to be signed by Alpha Kai.”
I froze for half a second.
Then I recovered.
“Okay.”
“I need you to take them to him.”
I swallowed.
“Today?”
“Yes.”
I wanted to say no.
I wanted to tell him that I had been avoiding Alpha Kai.
But I couldn’t explain why.
So I nodded.
“I’ll go.”
⸻
The drive to the pack felt longer than usual.
I sat quietly in the back of the parish vehicle.
I kept looking outside.
My heart began beating faster as we approached the territory.
I told myself it was nothing.
I was simply nervous.
That was all.
When we arrived, Alpha Kai was already waiting outside.
He looked at me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said,
“I need to talk to you first.”
I blinked.
“About the documents?”
“Not exactly.”
He paused.
“Come with me.”
I hesitated.
“Please.”
There was something about the way he said it.
Not commanding.
Not demanding.
Almost pleading.
So I nodded.
“Okay.”
We began walking.
I had never walked this far into the pack before.
Usually, I went directly to the school.
I had never explored the territory.
The scenery surprised me.
There were trees everywhere.
Green fields.
Flowers.
Streams.
The pack was beautiful.
Alpha Kai didn’t speak much.
He simply walked beside me.
After several minutes, we reached a waterfall.
I stopped.
Water poured over the rocks, sparkling beneath the sunlight.
“It’s beautiful.”
Kai looked at me instead of the waterfall.
“I’m glad you like it.”
I smiled faintly.
“I didn’t know this was here.”
“Most visitors don’t.”
We stayed there for a while.
For the first time since meeting him, I felt calm around him.
Then we returned to the pack house.
Eventually, we entered his office.
And something about seeing him there changed everything.
Alpha Kai sat behind his desk.
He looked powerful.
More powerful than I had noticed before.
There was an authority surrounding him.
A quiet strength.
I suddenly understood why people called him Alpha.
He signed the documents.
Then he placed the pen down.
“Sebastian.”
I looked at him.
“I need to tell you something.”
“Okay.”
He took a breath.
His hands were tense.
His expression was nervous.
I couldn’t understand it.
This was Alpha Kai.
The man everyone respected.
The man who looked like he could command an entire army without raising his voice.
Yet he looked frightened.
“Do you understand what a mate is?”
I nodded.
“Father Archie explained it to me.”
“How much?”
“Not much.”
Kai nodded.
“A mate is a sacred bond.”
I listened.
“Among wolves, it’s one of the most important bonds that exists.”
He paused.
“The Moon Goddess chooses two people for one another.”
I nodded slowly.
“I know.”
Kai’s eyes met mine.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“You are my mate.”
I froze.
He continued.
“I am yours.”
My heart stopped.
“I’ve waited eleven years for you.”
I couldn’t speak.
“I didn’t know who you would be. I didn’t know where you would come from.”
His voice became softer.
“But when I saw you, I knew.”
I stared at him.
He looked terrified.
Not of me.
Of my answer.
“I don’t expect you to change your life for me,” he said quickly.
“I don’t expect you to abandon your beliefs.”
“I don’t expect you to make a decision today.”
He swallowed.
“I just needed you to know.”
My mind was spinning.
The dreams.
The wolf.
The strange heartbeat.
The pain in my chest when I saw him hurting.
The feeling of something missing.
Everything suddenly seemed connected.
But I wasn’t ready.
I didn’t know what to say.
I reached for the documents.
“Can I leave?”
Kai’s face changed.
For a moment, I saw the pain in his eyes.
It was devastating.
He looked like I had physically wounded him.
But he nodded.
“Yes.”
I stood.
I left.
And the moment I stepped outside his office, my chest tightened.
I felt hot.
Confused.
Overwhelmed.
I didn’t look back.
I couldn’t.
⸻
When I returned to the parish, I went directly to my room.
I closed the door.
Then I broke down.
I cried.
I didn’t understand what was happening.
I knelt beside my bed.
“God…”
My voice broke.
“What is happening to me?”
I prayed.
Then I cried.
Then I prayed again.
I asked for guidance.
For wisdom.
For clarity.
But nothing came.
Only questions.
Why was Alpha Kai my mate?
Why had the Moon Goddess chosen him?
Why did I feel something whenever he was near?
Why had I dreamed of his wolf?
Why had I felt pain when he looked hurt?
Why did leaving him make my chest ache?
And why had his expression when I walked away hurt me so badly?
I covered my face.
“I don’t understand.”
The tears wouldn’t stop.
I prayed again.
And again.
And again.
But no matter how many times I asked for an answer…
I remained confused.
For the first time since I was twelve years old, I didn’t know what God was asking me to do.
And that frightened me more than anything.
Because I had spent my entire life knowing my path.
Until Alpha Kai walked into it.
And suddenly, I didn’t know where I was going anymore.
