I was still getting used to the sight of him.
Sebastian was here.
Actually here.
Under my roof. Within my pack. Within reach.
And every morning when I woke up, a small part of me still expected to discover that everything had been a dream.
But it wasn’t.
He had chosen me.
Maybe he didn’t understand everything yet. Maybe he wasn’t ready for everything that came with being my mate.
But he had stayed.
And for now, that was enough.
I wasn’t going to overwhelm him.
I had spent eleven years waiting for my mate. I could wait a little longer for him to become comfortable with me.
I sat behind my desk, going through pack reports, business documents, security updates, and several matters concerning the southern border.
The knock on my door interrupted me.
“Come in.”
Aiden entered.
He was carrying a folder.
“Alpha.”
I looked up.
“Are the preparations ready?”
“For tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Everything is ready.”
I leaned back in my chair.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“Did you arrange the ceremonial decorations?”
“Yes.”
“The council?”
“Already informed.”
“The elders?”
“Already informed.”
I nodded.
“And the other Alphas?”
Aiden raised an eyebrow.
“You want me to invite them?”
“No.”
He looked surprised.
“No?”
“No.”
I closed the folder in front of me.
“This isn’t a political ceremony. I don’t want half the supernatural world showing up.”
Aiden chuckled.
“So, just the pack?”
“Just the pack.”
Tomorrow was the full moon.
It was also an auspicious night according to our traditions.
And I wanted Sebastian introduced to my people then.
Not because I wanted to make a spectacle of him.
I wanted the whispers to stop.
They had started almost immediately.
Does the Alpha finally have a mate?
Who is he?
Is it true?
Why haven’t we been told?
The pack had already sensed Sebastian.
They knew something had changed.
And I wanted to give them an answer.
Tomorrow, everyone would know.
Sebastian was my mate.
He was their Luna.
There would be no more speculation.
No more uncertainty.
No more wondering who the man walking beside their Alpha was.
Aiden nodded.
“I’ll make sure everything is ready.”
“Good.”
He turned toward the door.
“Aiden.”
He looked back.
“Yes?”
“Keep it simple.”
His smile widened.
“I know you.”
“I mean it.”
“I know.”
He left.
I exhaled.
Tomorrow.
The thought made my wolf stir.
Luna.
I smiled despite myself.
“Calm down.”
Mate.
“Tomorrow.”
My wolf settled slightly.
For once, we agreed.
⸻
By evening, Sebastian returned.
I had asked Jack to keep an eye on him.
Not because I didn’t trust Sebastian.
I trusted my mate.
But he was new here.
He didn’t know the territory.
He didn’t know which areas were safe and which ones weren’t.
And although the pack was generally peaceful, there were places where I didn’t want him wandering alone.
Jack had only recently returned from another pack assignment.
He was my third-in-command and one of the most experienced wolves in the pack.
I had told him clearly.
“Don’t let him know you’re following him.”
Jack had looked at me for a moment.
“You do realize you’re being overprotective.”
“Yes.”
“He’s your mate.”
“I know.”
“Then you know he’ll eventually figure it out.”
I had stared at him.
“Just do it.”
Jack had laughed.
“Yes, Alpha.”
When Sebastian finally returned, I saw him from the stairs.
He was still dressed in his white priestly clothing.
The sight of him in white was almost distracting.
There was something about Sebastian that made him look peaceful.
Divine, almost.
His blue eyes were soft, his expression calm, and his quiet nature made him completely different from everyone I had ever known.
He greeted my mother.
Then he saw Liam.
“Hello.”
Liam smiled.
“Hello, Sebastian.”
They began talking.
I stopped on the stairs.
I didn’t know why I suddenly felt strange.
Sebastian was smiling.
Actually smiling.
And Liam was making him laugh.
My wolf immediately stirred.
Who is he?
“Liam.”
Why is mate smiling at him?
“He’s Aiden’s mate.”
I don’t like him.
I frowned.
“You’re being ridiculous.”
Mate is ours.
“I know.”
Then why is he making him smile?
I sighed.
“Liam is an omega. He’s Aiden’s mate. Calm down.”
My wolf grumbled.
I hated the fact that I was jealous.
It was irrational.
Liam had absolutely nothing to do with Sebastian.
Still, the sight of them together made something possessive rise inside me.
The bond was still new.
Everything felt heightened.
Every smile.
Every glance.
Every little interaction.
I had to remind myself that Sebastian was still learning.
He needed friends.
He needed people around him who weren’t constantly treating him like the Alpha’s precious mate.
I walked downstairs.
Sebastian looked up.
Our eyes met.
Something inside me immediately calmed.
“Good evening.”
“Good evening, Kai.”
Just hearing my name from his lips did something to me.
Dinner was already being prepared.
Everyone gathered around the table.
My mother.
Aiden.
Liam.
Jack.
Sebastian.
And me.
Sebastian sat beside my mother.
I looked at the empty seat beside me.
He probably didn’t know where he was supposed to sit.
I considered correcting him.
Then I stopped.
Give him time.
My wolf surprisingly agreed.
So I sat down without saying anything.
Dinner was peaceful.
Afterward, I formally introduced everyone.
“This is Jack.”
Jack stood slightly.
“Third-in-command.”
Sebastian nodded politely.
“It’s nice to meet you.”
Jack smiled.
“Likewise, Luna.”
Sebastian still looked slightly confused whenever someone called him that.
I almost smiled.
Then I turned toward Aiden.
“You already know Aiden, but I’ll officially introduce him.”
Aiden nodded.
“Aiden. Beta of the Shadow Wolf Pack.”
Sebastian smiled.
“Nice to meet you properly.”
Then I gestured toward Liam.
“And this is Liam.”
Liam smiled.
“Aiden’s mate.”
“He’s also an omega,” Aiden added proudly.
Liam rolled his eyes.
“You don’t have to announce that every time.”
Everyone laughed.
Even Sebastian.
I watched him quietly.
He was fitting in.
Slowly.
But he was.
And that meant everything to me.
⸻
Later that night, Sebastian went upstairs.
I waited a little before following.
I knocked on his door.
“Come in.”
I opened it.
He was sitting on the couch.
I noticed immediately that he moved slightly farther toward the opposite end when I entered.
My wolf growled.
He is avoiding us.
“Give him space.”
But—
“Space.”
My wolf reluctantly quieted.
I sat down.
There was a noticeable distance between us.
I decided not to close it.
“I wanted to talk to you about something.”
Sebastian looked at me.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong.”
I smiled faintly.
“I want to officially introduce you to the pack tomorrow.”
His eyebrows lifted.
“Introduce me?”
“As the Luna.”
He was quiet.
“Will it be crowded?”
“Yes.”
His eyes widened slightly.
“How crowded?”
“Most of the pack will be there.”
“Oh.”
I watched his expression carefully.
“It isn’t going to be some enormous celebration. It’s simply a ceremony where the pack formally acknowledges you.”
He nodded slowly.
“There will also be a bonding ceremony.”
“A bonding ceremony?”
“Not the mating bond.”
I quickly clarified.
“It’s a traditional ceremony connecting the Luna to the pack. It symbolizes acceptance and unity.”
“Oh.”
He looked down at his hands.
Then he asked quietly,
“Is it really necessary?”
The question hurt more than I expected.
For one brief second, I wanted to say no.
We can wait.
But I knew the truth.
It was necessary.
The pack needed to recognize him.
He needed to know where he stood.
And the rumors needed to end.
“Yes,” I answered honestly.
He looked at me.
“As the Luna, you should be recognized by the pack. You’re my mate, but you’re also becoming an important part of this community.”
I paused.
“But if you’re uncomfortable, we can postpone it.”
He thought for several seconds.
Then he nodded.
“If it’s necessary, then I’ll do it.”
My heart lifted.
“Thank you.”
He gave me a small smile.
I stood.
“I’ll let you rest.”
“Good night, Kai.”
“Good night, Sebastian.”
I walked out.
The moment the door closed behind me, my wolf practically bounced inside my head.
Mate stays.
I smiled.
“Yes.”
Mate will be Luna.
“Yes.”
Mate chose us.
I stopped walking.
That sentence still affected me.
“Yes,” I whispered.
Mate chose us.
⸻
I went to my room and lay down.
For the first time in weeks, my body didn’t feel like it was preparing for war.
My wolf was calm.
Almost peaceful.
Can we go to mate?
I laughed quietly.
“Absolutely not.”
Why?
“Because he’s already had a long day.”
But mate is here.
“And that’s enough.”
My wolf grumbled.
I closed my eyes.
“He needs time.”
There was silence.
Then—
Okay.
I smiled.
“Good.”
But as I lay there, another thought entered my mind.
One I didn’t particularly like admitting.
Tomorrow’s ceremony wasn’t only about tradition.
It wasn’t only about the pack.
It wasn’t only about ending rumors.
Part of me wanted Sebastian publicly recognized because I wanted everyone to know he was mine.
I wanted the world to know I had finally found my mate.
And perhaps, selfishly, I wanted Sebastian to feel tied to this place.
To me.
If he stood before my entire pack and accepted the Luna position, perhaps he wouldn’t wake up one morning and decide he wanted to leave.
Perhaps he would realize that this was his home.
That I was his home.
I knew that thought was selfish.
I wasn’t trying to trap him.
I would never force him.
But I was still afraid.
Eleven years of waiting had taught me something.
You could wait your entire life for something and still lose it.
So yes.
I wanted to secure what I had.
I wanted Sebastian to stay.
But I also wanted him to stay because he wanted to.
That was the difference.
I turned onto my side.
Mate is ours.
This time, I didn’t correct my wolf.
I simply closed my eyes.
“Yes,” I whispered.
“But we have to make him want to stay.”
And for the first time, my wolf didn’t argue.
