I had discovered something dangerous.
I liked having Sebastian in my office.
Not because he was distracting me.
Well…
Maybe a little.
But mostly because I liked the quietness of it.
For the past few evenings, whenever Sebastian finished most of his Luna duties, I had started finding reasons to ask him to keep me company.
Sometimes there was a genuine reason.
Sometimes there wasn’t.
Tonight was one of those nights where I had absolutely no excuse.
I was working through several reports while Sebastian sat on the couch across from my desk with a stack of papers on his lap.
He was writing.
Reading.
Making notes.
Occasionally, he would push his hair away from his forehead before continuing.
And every few minutes, he would glance at me.
Then go back to his work.
I smiled.
This was enough.
It wasn’t dramatic.
We weren’t holding hands.
We weren’t kissing.
We weren’t doing anything that would make anyone look at us and immediately think we were a couple.
But we were together.
And that mattered.
My wolf seemed to understand that too.
Mate is here.
I know.
*Close.
I know.
*Keep mate.
I sighed.
We’re not keeping him.
My wolf growled.
Not keeping. Staying.
I smiled faintly.
Fine.
That was something I could agree with.
I understood that Sebastian was inexperienced.
He had never dated.
He had spent most of his life preparing for the priesthood, and then suddenly his entire future had changed.
I couldn’t expect him to magically know how relationships worked.
He didn’t know how to flirt.
He didn’t know when to make a romantic gesture.
He didn’t know how to behave around a mate.
And honestly?
Neither did I.
I’d never had a serious relationship.
There had been two people in my past, but neither had been a relationship in the way Sebastian would understand one.
They had been brief.
Physical.
Nothing more.
Nothing I wanted to revisit.
And certainly nothing I intended to tell Sebastian about.
That part of my life was over.
It belonged in the past.
Sebastian deserved something different.
Something genuine.
Something that wasn’t rushed.
So I was learning.
With him.
Slowly.
One evening at a time.
I looked up from my documents.
Sebastian was still writing.
“What are you working on?”
He looked up.
“Community funding.”
“Still?”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
“You’ve been working on that for almost an hour.”
“I know.”
“What exactly are you trying to do?”
He turned the paper toward himself.
“We have several families who need additional assistance, but I don’t want to distribute everything equally without considering their individual situations.”
I leaned back.
“Why?”
“Because equal doesn’t always mean fair.”
I stared at him.
There it was again.
That thing about him.
The reason people naturally trusted him.
The reason my pack had accepted him so quickly.
He didn’t simply help people.
He thought about them.
He considered what they needed.
He cared.
“You’re good at this,” I said.
He looked surprised.
“At what?”
“Being Luna.”
His expression softened.
“Thank you.”
I smiled.
“I’m proud of you.”
He went quiet.
Then he lowered his eyes to the papers.
“Thank you, Kai.”
I watched the faint blush appear on his cheeks.
My wolf immediately became excited.
Mate is blushing.
I noticed.
*Make mate blush again.
I rolled my eyes.
Be quiet.
The wolf was not quiet.
But I was getting better at ignoring him.
⸻
My mother had spoken to me about Sebastian several times.
She was impressed.
The elders were impressed.
Even some of the older pack members had approached me to praise his work.
They talked about the children he had helped.
The families he had supported.
The community programs he had reorganized.
The way he had begun working with the people without making them feel like they were receiving charity.
And I had to admit…
I was proud.
Very proud.
I had known Sebastian was kind from the first day.
But there was a difference between knowing someone was kind and watching them extend that kindness to your family.
My pack wasn’t just a territory.
It wasn’t just a group of wolves.
They were my people.
My family.
And Sebastian was beginning to treat them like his family too.
That meant more to me than he probably realized.
He had accepted one of the most important parts of our culture without trying to erase himself in the process.
He was still Sebastian.
Still gentle.
Still thoughtful.
Still connected to his faith.
But he was also becoming Luna.
And somehow, the two sides of him worked together beautifully.
I looked across the room again.
He was still writing.
“Sebastian.”
“Hm?”
“Are you tired?”
“A little.”
“Then stop working.”
He smiled.
“You say that like you aren’t working.”
“I’m the Alpha.”
“That doesn’t mean you don’t need sleep.”
I laughed.
“You’re lecturing me now?”
“Maybe.”
I smiled.
“I like it.”
He looked at me.
“What?”
“When you care enough to lecture me.”
His cheeks turned pink again.
He looked back down.
I smiled.
This was progress.
Small progress.
But progress.
⸻
After a while, Sebastian put his papers aside.
“I’m finished.”
“Good.”
He looked at me.
“Do you need help with anything?”
“No.”
“Then why did you ask me to stay?”
I froze.
My wolf froze.
My brain froze.
Sebastian waited.
I cleared my throat.
“Because…”
I looked at him.
“I like having you here.”
His expression softened.
“Oh.”
“Is that okay?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
A small smile appeared on his face.
“I like being here too.”
My heart gave one hard beat.
My wolf nearly lost his mind.
He likes being with us.
I heard him.
*Mate likes us.
I heard you.
We should—
No.
My wolf grumbled.
But even he eventually settled.
I leaned back in my chair.
Maybe this was what a relationship was supposed to feel like.
Not pressure.
Not demands.
Just two people slowly making room for each other.
Sebastian didn’t have to know how dating worked.
Neither did I.
We could figure it out together.
I didn’t need everything immediately.
I just needed him to keep choosing to stay.
And every evening he walked into my office and sat beside me, every time he smiled at me, every time he brought me tea, every time he asked about my day…
I felt like he was choosing me a little more.
That was enough.
For now.
I looked at my mate again.
He was quietly organizing his papers.
And I smiled.
Because for the first time in my life, I wasn’t afraid of taking things slowly.
I had waited eleven years for him.
I could wait a little longer.
As long as he was here.
As long as he was mine by choice.
And as long as, little by little, he was beginning to understand that this wasn’t just my world anymore.
It was becoming ours.
