I had spent the entire day thinking about one thing.
Kai.
More specifically, Kai and the way he had been struggling.
The sniffing was helping him. I could see that much.
Every time Kai buried his face against my neck and breathed in my scent, there was something in his expression that softened. His shoulders relaxed. His breathing became steadier. His wolf seemed calmer.
But I also knew it wasn’t enough.
I could see it in his eyes.
I could see it in the way his arms tightened around me whenever he hugged me.
And honestly?
Forty times.
Kai had hugged and sniffed me so many times the other day that I had lost count after forty.
Forty.
That had to be some kind of record.
And somehow, I wasn’t even angry about it.
I was embarrassed, yes.
Confused, definitely.
But I didn’t dislike it.
Kai was my mate.
And watching him struggle while I stood there doing nothing didn’t feel right.
The problem was that I didn’t know what more I could do.
I was inexperienced.
Everything about this world was new to me. The bond. The pack. The instincts. The way Alphas reacted to their mates.
And then there was Kai.
Kai wasn’t simply an Alpha.
He was my Alpha.
Which somehow made everything more complicated.
I was sitting in the Luna’s office that afternoon, going through some paperwork when the door opened.
I looked up.
“Liam.”
He smiled.
“Wow. You look busy.”
I laughed softly. “I am.”
He walked inside and dropped into one of the chairs.
“I was nearby. I had lunch, so I thought I’d come see how you’re doing.”
“That’s nice of you.”
I returned my attention to the papers, but my mind wasn’t really there.
I kept glancing at him.
Finally, I sighed.
“Liam?”
“Hmm?”
“Can I ask you something?”
He immediately sat up straighter.
“Of course.”
I hesitated.
“Can I… do more?”
Liam stared at me for a moment.
Then his expression softened.
“Yes.”
My cheeks warmed.
“Really?”
“There is definitely more you can do,” he said. “But Sebastian, I don’t want you doing anything because you feel pressured.”
“I don’t.”
“You have to be sure.”
I looked down at my hands.
“I am.”
Liam waited.
I swallowed.
“I really want to.”
The words surprised even me.
Liam’s eyebrows shot up.
“Oh.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He grinned.
“Nothing. You’re just…”
“What?”
“You’re not as innocent as you pretend.”
I immediately shook my head.
“I am not—”
He laughed.
“Relax. I’m teasing you.”
I covered my face for a moment.
Then he said, “You could start with something simple.”
“Like what?”
“A kiss.”
My face immediately became hot.
“A kiss?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t know how.”
Liam stared at me.
Then he burst out laughing.
“You don’t know how to kiss?”
I glared at him.
“I have never kissed anyone.”
His laughter stopped.
“Oh.”
“Exactly.”
He rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
“Okay. Then let’s make it simple. You don’t need to know everything. You can just get close, give him a small kiss, and let him take the lead.”
I nodded slowly.
That sounded manageable.
Until Liam added, “Kai has experience.”
Something strange twisted inside my chest.
I didn’t know why.
The thought of Kai having kissed someone else bothered me.
A lot.
I immediately pushed the feeling away.
That was his past.
I had no right to question it.
Besides, Kai had never made me feel like I was competing with anyone.
He had always been patient with me.
So I nodded.
“I’ll try.”
Liam smiled.
“That’s my boy.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Don’t make this worse.”
“I’m just saying, you’re adorable when you’re nervous.”
“Please stop.”
He laughed again.
But despite all the teasing, I was grateful.
He had given me something to think about.
Something I actually wanted to try.
⸻
Dinner that evening felt different.
I kept catching Liam looking at me.
Every time our eyes met, he gave me that expression.
You can do it.
I wanted to disappear.
Kai noticed.
He looked between us but didn’t say anything.
After dinner, Kai went to his office.
I stayed behind for a few minutes before preparing his tea.
That tea was my excuse.
My plan was simple.
I would take the tea to him.
I would stay with him.
And if I found the courage…
I would kiss him.
My heart was pounding by the time I reached his office.
I knocked.
“Come in.”
I opened the door.
Kai looked up immediately.
His eyes softened when he saw me.
“Seb.”
I smiled nervously.
“I brought your tea.”
I placed the cup on his desk.
Kai stood.
I already knew what was coming.
He walked toward me.
“Can I sniff you?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
His arms wrapped gently around my waist.
Then he lowered his head toward my neck.
I closed my eyes.
His breathing was warm against my skin as he inhaled my scent.
I could feel his body relax.
And somehow, I found myself relaxing too.
After a moment, he lifted his head.
“I saw you looking at Liam earlier.”
I blinked.
“Everything is fine.”
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
He studied my face for another second before nodding.
And suddenly, I remembered why I had come.
My heart started racing.
I could ask him.
I could tell him what I wanted.
But if I asked, I knew I’d probably become too embarrassed to actually do it.
So I didn’t.
Instead, I took a breath.
I rose onto my toes.
And before I could change my mind, I leaned forward and pressed a small kiss against his lips.
Just a quick peck.
Then I immediately stepped back.
My entire face felt like it was burning.
“I…”
I didn’t even know what I was trying to say.
Kai was completely still.
He was staring at me.
Not angrily.
Not strangely.
Just intensely.
My heart hammered harder.
Then his voice came quietly.
“Seb?”
I swallowed.
“Yes?”
“Can I kiss you?”
His voice was deeper than usual.
Something about the way he asked made every thought disappear from my mind.
I couldn’t find my voice.
So I nodded.
Kai moved slowly.
Very slowly.
He gave me every opportunity to step away.
I didn’t.
His lips touched mine gently.
The kiss was soft.
Careful.
Nothing rushed.
Nothing frightening.
Just warm and surprisingly comforting.
I closed my eyes.
For those few seconds, everything else disappeared.
There was no pack.
No Luna duties.
No traditions I still didn’t understand.
No church.
No questions about the future.
Just Kai.
My mate.
When we finally separated, I couldn’t look at him.
I was too embarrassed.
“Good night,” I whispered.
And before he could answer, I hurried out of the office.
I practically ran to my room.
The moment I closed the door behind me, I leaned against it and covered my face.
My cheeks were burning.
I touched my lips.
I had actually kissed Kai.
I had kissed my mate.
And somehow, the most surprising part was that I hadn’t been afraid.
I smiled despite myself.
Then I whispered into the empty room,
“God… that was really nice.”
And for the first time, the thought of kissing Kai again didn’t scare me nearly as much as it probably should have.
