The moment Sebastian’s lips touched mine, everything stopped.
My thoughts.
My breathing.
Even my wolf went completely silent.
For a few seconds, I honestly forgot how to move.
Sebastian had kissed me.
Sebastian had kissed me first.
My mate had actually made the first move.
And then, because apparently my heart hadn’t suffered enough, I kissed him back.
It was gentle. Careful. Nothing rushed.
But to me, it felt like everything.
When we pulled apart, Sebastian looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him.
“Good night,” he whispered.
Then he practically ran.
I watched him disappear through the doorway.
My wolf immediately came roaring back.
Chase him.
I stayed where I was.
Go after mate.
“No.”
CHASE MATE.
“He’s embarrassed.”
We don’t care.
“I care.”
My wolf growled.
But he kissed us.
“I know.”
He wants us.
“I know.”
Then go.
I smiled despite myself.
“I said no.”
Because as much as I wanted to follow Sebastian upstairs, I knew him.
He had spent weeks learning how to be comfortable around me.
He had finally taken one tiny step forward.
I wasn’t going to turn that beautiful moment into something that made him retreat.
So I let him go.
⸻
The next morning, breakfast was torture.
Sebastian walked into the dining room.
He greeted everyone.
Everyone except me.
Well, technically, he greeted me.
“Good morning.”
Then his eyes immediately went somewhere else.
The table.
His plate.
The wall.
The ceiling.
Anywhere but me.
I almost laughed.
He was embarrassed.
My wolf was not amused.
Mate is ignoring us.
“He’s shy.”
Mate kissed us.
“I remember.”
Mate should kiss us again.
“Not now.”
Why?
“Because we’re eating breakfast.”
My wolf grumbled.
I looked at Sebastian again.
His ears were slightly pink.
Definitely embarrassed.
He barely touched his food.
Then, after only a few minutes, he suddenly announced, “I have some meetings.”
I looked at him.
Meetings?
At this hour?
He stood immediately.
“Excuse me.”
And disappeared.
I sighed.
My wolf groaned.
He is running.
“He isn’t running.”
He is running.
“He’s embarrassed.”
Same thing.
I shook my head.
That wolf was impossible.
⸻
Later that afternoon, I went looking for him.
I found Sebastian in the Luna’s office.
He was sitting behind the desk, going through some documents.
The moment I entered, his eyes immediately dropped to the papers.
Interesting.
I walked closer.
“Hello, Seb.”
“Hello.”
His voice was calm.
But nervous.
Very nervous.
I walked around the desk until I was standing beside him.
He still wouldn’t look at me.
“Seb.”
“Hmm?”
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
I reached down and gently took his hand.
He looked at our hands before finally looking at me.
I helped him stand.
He was much shorter than me, so I wanted us to be standing at the same level rather than having him sitting while I towered over him.
“Why are you avoiding me?”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
“I’m not.”
I smiled.
“Sebastian.”
He sighed.
“Okay. Maybe a little.”
I laughed softly.
His cheeks immediately turned pink.
“You know why.”
“I want you to say it.”
He stared at me.
I waited.
Finally, he whispered, “I kissed you.”
“And?”
“You know.”
“I know what?”
He looked horrified.
I couldn’t help teasing him a little.
“You kissed me, Seb. It’s not a crime.”
“I know.”
“And I kissed you back.”
“I know.”
“So what’s the problem?”
He looked down.
“I’ve never done that before.”
My teasing disappeared.
I squeezed his hand.
“I know.”
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”
“You don’t have to know everything.”
He looked up at me.
“We’re mates,” I said softly. “We’re supposed to get to know each other. We’re supposed to be close. We can hold hands. We can talk. We can kiss. We can take our time.”
His face became even redder at the word kiss.
I smiled.
“We don’t have to rush anything.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
I studied him for a moment.
Then I asked the question I’d been wanting to ask since yesterday.
“Can I kiss you?”
His eyes widened.
He hesitated.
I waited.
I wasn’t going to pressure him.
Finally, he gave me the smallest nod.
“Yes.”
I leaned down.
This kiss was just as gentle as the first.
But this time, Sebastian didn’t immediately run away.
When we separated, he was still blushing.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
He looked confused.
“For what?”
“For trusting me.”
His expression softened.
“You’re welcome.”
I smiled.
“Now go finish your work.”
He laughed quietly.
“Okay.”
I released his hand and walked out.
The moment the office door closed behind me, I smiled like an i***t.
My wolf was practically dancing.
Mate kissed us.
“Yes.”
Mate kissed us twice.
“Yes.”
We should go back.
“No.”
Why?
“Because I have dignity.”
My wolf scoffed.
Barely.
I laughed under my breath.
⸻
I reached my office still smiling.
Aiden was already there, going through some documents.
He looked up.
Then he narrowed his eyes.
“Why are you smiling like that?”
“I’m not.”
“You absolutely are.”
I sat behind my desk.
Aiden stared at me.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“Kai.”
I tried to ignore him.
He didn’t stop.
Finally, I sighed.
“I kissed my mate.”
Aiden froze.
Then his eyebrows shot up.
“Wow.”
I leaned back.
“Yeah.”
“That’s… that’s ballsy.”
I laughed.
“Ballsy?”
“You’ve spent months barely touching the man.”
“I know.”
“And now you’re kissing him?”
“He kissed me first.”
Aiden’s mouth fell open.
“He did?”
I nodded proudly.
Aiden burst out laughing.
“Your mate kissed you first?”
“Yes.”
“Look at you!”
I threw a pen at him.
He dodged it.
“I’m happy for you, man.”
I smiled.
“Thanks.”
Aiden shook his head.
“Finally.”
My wolf hummed happily in the back of my mind.
Mate chose us.
And for once, I didn’t argue.
Because that was exactly how it felt.
Sebastian was choosing me.
Slowly.
Carefully.
One little step at a time.
And I would wait for every single one.
