I had expected the meetings to be difficult.
I had expected political arguments, disagreements between Alphas, long discussions about territory, security, alliances, and the recent rogue attacks.
What I had not expected was to spend most of the morning being completely distracted by my mate.
Sebastian had been incredible.
From the moment the visiting Alphas and their Lunas arrived, he had been everywhere.
Greeting them.
Welcoming them.
Making sure their rooms were prepared.
Checking the meals.
Speaking politely with the visiting Lunas.
Making sure everyone had what they needed.
He moved through the pack house with that quiet confidence of his, and I couldn’t help watching him.
He was still learning.
He still asked questions.
Sometimes I could see the uncertainty in his eyes when someone mentioned an old pack tradition he didn’t understand.
But he never allowed that uncertainty to stop him.
He listened.
He learned.
And then he acted.
I was proud of him.
More than I could properly explain.
The breakfast table had been full that morning. The visiting Alphas sat with me while the Lunas sat with Sebastian and my mother. The atmosphere was surprisingly warm.
Until Lily arrived.
I hadn’t been expecting her.
Her father, Alpha Asha, had been scheduled to attend the meetings personally, but apparently something had come up. So he had sent Lily in his place.
Lily was a capable Alpha.
I couldn’t deny that.
She was intelligent, strategic, and more than capable of representing her father’s pack.
But there was history between us.
A history I had no intention of revisiting.
Especially now.
Because I had a mate.
And my mate was sitting only a few feet away from me, calmly discussing something with one of the visiting Lunas.
Lily caught my attention during the introductions.
“Alpha Kai,” she said, giving me a smile that was far too familiar. “It’s been a long time.”
I gave her a polite nod.
“It has.”
Her smile widened.
I didn’t respond.
I wasn’t interested in encouraging anything.
Thankfully, Sebastian was busy helping the other guests, so he didn’t notice the exchange.
I didn’t want him to.
Not because I was hiding anything.
There was simply nothing worth bringing into our relationship.
The past was the past.
And Sebastian was my present.
My future.
The meetings went on for hours.
We discussed the rogue attacks.
We discussed security.
We discussed territory boundaries and alliances.
We discussed possible changes to several pack laws.
Meanwhile, Sebastian had his own meetings with the visiting Lunas.
Every time I looked toward that side of the room, he was listening attentively.
Sometimes he would take notes.
Sometimes he would ask a question.
Sometimes he would simply smile and allow someone else to speak.
He had this way of making people feel heard.
That was one of the things I loved most about him.
He didn’t need to dominate a conversation to have an impact.
He simply cared.
By dinner, everyone seemed comfortable.
The food was excellent, the conversations were loud, and Sebastian had somehow managed to make the entire house feel warmer.
People were laughing.
The visiting Lunas were speaking comfortably with him.
Even some of the older pack members had stopped by to welcome our guests.
I watched Sebastian from across the table.
He was listening to one of the visiting Lunas speak about her children’s education.
Sebastian’s expression immediately softened.
Of course it did.
He cared about children.
He cared about families.
He cared about people.
That was Sebastian.
And I couldn’t have been prouder.
The visitors would remain for two days.
Two long days.
And I silently prayed there wouldn’t be any unnecessary drama.
Especially involving Lily.
⸻
Later that night, Sebastian joined me in my office.
I had asked him to come because there were several things I wanted to discuss with him.
He sat on the couch, his hands resting neatly in his lap as he listened.
“We’re considering changing how we respond to rogue attacks,” I explained. “Instead of waiting until they’re close to pack territory, we’re considering expanding our patrol boundaries.”
Sebastian nodded.
“Would that put more people at risk?”
I paused.
“Possibly.”
“Then maybe there should be another option.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“If the goal is to identify them before they reach the pack, couldn’t you increase surveillance without increasing the number of people physically patrolling?”
I stared at him.
He continued carefully.
“I’m not an expert in pack security, so forgive me if that doesn’t make sense.”
“No,” I said slowly. “It makes sense.”
He looked surprised.
“It does?”
“Very much.”
We talked about it for several minutes.
His idea wasn’t perfect, but it gave us another angle to consider.
And I loved that he was trying.
He wasn’t pretending to know everything.
He wasn’t trying to become an Alpha.
He was simply learning how to be my Luna.
And he was doing it beautifully.
Eventually, our conversation shifted away from pack business.
I looked at him.
“You were very busy today.”
He smiled.
“I was.”
“I’m proud of you.”
His cheeks immediately turned pink.
I smiled.
There it was.
That blush.
I would never get tired of it.
I stood and walked toward the couch.
“I’m serious, Sebastian.”
He looked up at me.
“You handled everything beautifully.”
“I was just doing what Mom taught me.”
“You did more than that.”
I sat beside him.
“You made everyone feel welcome.”
He looked down at his hands.
“I’m still learning.”
“I know.”
I reached for his hand.
He allowed me to take it.
That tiny gesture still meant so much to me.
His fingers rested inside mine, warm and gentle.
“I’m really glad you’re here,” I told him.
He looked at me.
“So am I.”
Something inside me softened.
I leaned closer.
He didn’t move away.
So I kissed him.
Slowly.
Gently.
Nothing rushed.
Just a soft kiss that lasted only a few seconds.
When I pulled away, Sebastian’s fingers had moved into my hair.
He seemed to realize what he’d done and immediately froze.
I smiled.
My wolf practically screamed inside my head.
Mate.
I couldn’t help smiling.
“Good night, Seb.”
He nodded shyly.
“Good night, Kai.”
I walked him to his room.
He opened the door, stepped inside, and turned toward me.
For a moment, neither of us said anything.
Then he smiled.
A small, shy smile.
“Good night.”
“Good night.”
He closed the door.
I stood there for another few seconds before finally walking away.
⸻
By the time I finished showering, it was late.
The meetings had dragged on longer than expected.
I stepped out of the bathroom with a towel around my waist and froze.
Lily was sitting on my bed.
My wolf immediately reacted.
No.
I stared at her.
“Lily.”
She smiled.
“I’ve missed you.”
My expression hardened.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
She stood.
“You have a mate now.”
“I do.”
“And yet you’re sleeping alone.”
I didn’t answer.
She took a step toward me.
“I don’t think your relationship is as serious as you think it is.”
My wolf growled.
Our mate.
I took a deep breath.
“Lily, leave.”
She frowned.
“I’m only saying—”
“I don’t care what you’re saying.”
Her expression changed.
“You’ve changed.”
“Yes.”
“Because of him?”
“Because I found my mate.”
I looked directly at her.
“And I will not allow anyone to disrespect him.”
Her eyes moved toward the chair where I had left my clothes.
“Even though he still dresses like—”
“Stop.”
My voice was firm.
She fell silent.
“Sebastian is my mate. He is my Luna. He is part of this pack, and he has earned my respect.”
I stepped toward the door.
“You are here representing your father and your pack. I will respect that. But you will respect my mate.”
Lily stared at me.
Then she smiled.
It wasn’t a friendly smile.
“Don’t worry, Kai.”
She walked toward the door.
“I still have two days here.”
She paused beside me.
“Something will happen.”
I said nothing.
She gave me one last look.
“I know you miss me.”
Then she walked out.
I closed the door behind her.
My wolf was furious.
We should have never allowed her near us.
I rubbed my forehead.
“That was before Sebastian.”
We have our mate now.
“I know.”
We protect mate.
“I know.”
We don’t let anyone hurt mate.
“I know.”
My wolf went silent for a moment.
Then—
We are in agreement.
I almost laughed.
“We’re the same person, you know.”
Exactly.
I shook my head.
But my thoughts had already returned to Sebastian.
His shy smile.
His hand in mine.
His fingers in my hair.
That little blush after I kissed him.
My wolf softened.
Mate.
I smiled.
“Yes.”
And for the first time that night, the anger disappeared.
Because no matter what happened over the next two days, one thing was certain.
Sebastian was my mate.
And I would protect what we were building.
Slowly.
Patiently.
Without rushing him.
Because whatever happened between us had to be something he chose too.
And I was willing to wait.
