The second day of the meetings started earlier than I would have liked.
By five in the morning, I was already awake.
I had barely slept the night before. There were too many things to organize, too many people to check on, and too many responsibilities sitting on my shoulders.
Still, I reminded myself that this was my role now.
I was the Luna.
So I got out of bed, prayed quietly, showered, dressed, and started my morning.
Breakfast had to be prepared. The visiting Alphas needed to be checked on. The Lunas needed to be welcomed. The guest rooms needed to be inspected. I had to make sure everyone had everything they needed before the meetings began.
By the time breakfast started, I was already exhausted.
But I was happy.
There was something strangely fulfilling about seeing everyone gathered together.
The pack members were loud.
Very loud.
I had noticed that about them from the beginning.
People talked over one another, laughed loudly, teased each other, and sometimes argued over completely insignificant things before laughing about them a few minutes later.
It was different from what I was used to.
But I liked it.
It felt like family.
During breakfast, I spent most of my time speaking with the visiting Lunas.
One of them particularly caught my attention.
She was from the Bloodhound Pack, an older woman who carried herself with a quiet confidence. She told me she had been a Luna since she was seventeen.
Seventeen.
I couldn’t imagine being given such a responsibility at that age.
She spoke about the charity programs her pack had started and some of the measures they were putting in place to support families who had lost members during rogue attacks.
I listened carefully.
Then she asked me about Shadow Pack.
I told her about some of the work I had been doing.
The children.
The families.
The charitable programs.
The people who needed assistance.
She smiled at me.
“I’ve heard about you,” she said.
I blinked.
“You have?”
She nodded.
“You’ve done more in one month than some Lunas accomplish in a year.”
I immediately looked down at my plate.
“I’m just doing what I can.”
She laughed softly.
“That is exactly what I mean.”
I didn’t know what to say to that.
Compliments still made me uncomfortable.
I wasn’t doing any of this for recognition.
I simply couldn’t look at someone who needed help and walk away.
Maybe that was something that would never leave me, no matter how much my life changed.
After breakfast, the meetings began.
The Alphas discussed alliances, security, rogue movements, territorial borders, trade, and several other matters I was still learning about.
The Lunas participated as well.
I tried to listen more than I spoke.
But whenever someone asked for my opinion, I answered.
I was still learning.
I knew that.
But I was learning quickly.
At some point during the meeting, my eyes drifted toward Kai.
And that’s when I noticed her.
Lily.
She was sitting across from him.
And she was smiling at him.
Not a normal smile.
It was something different.
Something familiar.
Something that made my stomach tighten.
I immediately looked away.
Maybe they’re friends.
That was the explanation I gave myself.
Maybe they had known each other for years.
Maybe they were simply comfortable with one another.
I didn’t want to assume anything.
So I focused on the meeting.
The hours passed.
Eventually, the meeting ended.
Then came dinner.
I had organized that too.
Everyone gathered around the large table, and once again, the room became loud with conversation.
People discussed the day’s decisions.
Ideas were exchanged.
Arguments were made.
Suggestions were offered.
I mostly listened.
By the time dinner ended, I was exhausted.
Everyone gradually returned to their rooms.
I stood there for a moment, breathing slowly.
I should have gone to bed.
But I wanted to see Kai.
I knew he would still be in his office working.
So I went to the kitchen and made him coffee.
It had become something of a routine.
I liked making things for him.
It was a small way of showing him that I cared.
I carried the cup down the hallway toward his office.
But when I reached the door, I stopped.
The door was slightly open.
That was strange.
Kai always closed his office door.
I was about to knock when I heard a woman’s voice.
Lily.
“I miss you.”
My heart stopped.
I stood completely still.
She continued.
“I know you miss me too.”
I couldn’t move.
Then she laughed softly.
“I have some tricks you used to enjoy.”
My fingers tightened around the cup.
I didn’t want to listen.
I knew I should walk away.
But my feet wouldn’t move.
Then she said something that made my stomach drop.
“He’s your mate, but you don’t even share a room.”
My breathing became shallow.
“He still wears that priestly robe. He can never give you what I can.”
My heart hurt.
“He can’t do what I can do.”
I didn’t understand what was happening.
My mind was screaming at me to leave.
But then I saw them through the small opening in the door.
Lily moved closer to Kai.
She leaned toward him.
Toward his face.
My hands began shaking.
The coffee cup slipped from my fingers.
CRASH.
The sound echoed through the hallway.
Kai immediately turned.
His eyes widened.
He pushed Lily away.
Our eyes met.
For a second, neither of us moved.
Then I ran.
I didn’t know where I was going.
I just knew I needed to get away.
I reached my room and pushed the door open.
I barely made it inside before I heard footsteps behind me.
“Sebastian!”
I tried to close the door.
Kai caught it.
“Seb, please.”
I couldn’t look at him.
“Baby, it’s not what you think.”
My eyes burned.
He stepped closer.
“Please let me explain.”
I said nothing.
“Seb, I pushed her away.”
Still nothing.
“I swear to you, nothing happened.”
My vision blurred.
I didn’t want to cry.
I hated crying.
But tears began falling anyway.
Kai’s voice softened.
“Baby…”
I finally looked at him.
My mind was spinning.
There were too many thoughts.
Too many questions.
Too many possibilities.
And then I remembered the wolf.
The one I had seen in my dreams.
The one whose presence had always felt strangely familiar.
I was almost certain it was Kai’s wolf.
And suddenly, I didn’t want Kai.
I wanted him.
The other him.
“Can I please talk to your wolf?”
Kai froze.
“What?”
“Please.”
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“Can I talk to your wolf?”
“Seb, let’s talk about this together.”
“I don’t want to talk to you right now.”
My voice cracked.
“Please.”
Kai stared at me for several seconds.
Then he closed his eyes.
When they opened again, they were no longer his normal eyes.
They were bright yellow.
Powerful.
But somehow comforting.
A deep voice came from him.
“Hi, my love.”
I froze.
It was him.
The wolf from my dreams.
My lips trembled.
“Hi.”
He stepped toward me.
“How are you?”
I shook my head.
I couldn’t answer.
Instead, I walked forward and wrapped my arms around him.
He immediately embraced me.
Strong arms surrounded me.
“Baby, don’t cry.”
I buried my face against him.
“Please don’t cry, my love.”
I didn’t know why I was crying so hard.
Maybe it was everything.
The stress.
The uncertainty.
The fear.
The embarrassment.
The things I had heard.
The things I didn’t understand.
“I don’t know what to do,” I whispered.
The wolf held me tighter.
“Do you want me to explain what happened?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I tightened my arms around him.
“Just hug me.”
He stayed silent.
“I’ve seen you before,” I whispered. “In my dreams.”
His hand moved gently over my back.
“I thought you would be the best person to comfort me.”
“I am.”
His voice was deep and steady.
“I will always comfort you.”
I closed my eyes.
For the first time since I had heard Lily’s voice, my mind began to quiet.
I didn’t know what would happen next.
I didn’t know what Kai would say.
I didn’t know what tomorrow would bring.
But right then, wrapped safely in the arms of the wolf I had somehow met long before I understood what he was, I finally felt like I could breathe.
And for tonight, that was enough.
