Episode 8

Megan's POV Everything was dark. There was no pain. No fear. No hunger. No loneliness. For the first time in months, I felt completely at peace. A long sigh escaped my lips. This is nice. Wait... Where am I? I pushed myself into a sitting position. It was harder than I expected, as if my body weighed twice as much as normal. The ground beneath me felt soft. Grass. Leaves. Dirt. So I was outside? That didn't make sense. There was no moon. No stars. No clouds. Nothing. Just darkness stretching endlessly in every direction. Maybe I was inside somewhere. Slowly standing, I stretched my arms out in front of me so I wouldn't walk into something. Or someone. I considered calling out. Then immediately decided against it. Absolutely not. I had watched enough horror movies to know how that ended. You know those scenes where someone is alone in a dark house, hears a creepy noise, and still yells, "Hello?" Why? Who exactly are they expecting to answer? And somehow a voice always replies from another room. "Hey! I'm in the kitchen! Want a sandwich?" Then boom. Murder. No thank you. I would not be making that mistake. Instead, I focused on what I remembered. Okay... I was walking through the woods. I heard a strange woman's voice twice. I smelled something absolutely disgusting. Then... Nothing. Everything went black. So someone had to have knocked me out. That was the only explanation. But if I had been attacked, why didn't I hurt? My head felt fine. Nothing ached. Honestly, I should have been freaking out right now. Instead, I felt strangely calm. "If you would simply ask what's on your mind, someone might answer you." I spun around so fast I nearly tripped. My heart slammed against my ribs. There, floating in the darkness, were two glowing blue eyes. Nothing else. Just eyes. Very bright eyes. "W-Who are you?" The eyes blinked. Then I heard a soft laugh. A laugh. Seriously? I was terrified and she was laughing at me? I folded my arms. "Okay, that's rude." The laughter stopped. "Whether you're here to kill me or be my friend, you don't have to laugh at me just because I asked who you are." For a moment, silence filled the darkness. Then the voice sighed. "I suppose that's fair." I relaxed slightly. At least she wasn't denying the murder possibility. "Look," I said carefully. "I'm trying really hard not to panic right now." The woman chuckled again. "You're doing surprisingly well." "Thank you. I think." I rubbed my forehead. "Can we do something simple? I'll ask questions, and if you can answer them, answer them. If you can't, just tell me no." The woman seemed to think about it. "I suppose we can do that." A pause. "Although there are a few things I need to tell you first." I nodded. "Okay." The glowing eyes seemed to soften. "Megan, you are not ordinary." Great. That sounded concerning. "You are destined for greatness." That sounded even more concerning. The woman continued. "Being here has allowed me to see parts of your memories." Immediately, I stiffened. That felt invasive. "First, I want to tell you how sorry I am for everything you've endured." The kindness in her voice caught me off guard. "You've suffered far more than someone your age should have to." I swallowed hard. "But I can also tell you this." The blue eyes brightened. "You won't be alone much longer." My heart skipped. "What?" "Someone is coming." Hope immediately flared inside my chest. "Someone who will stand beside you." My throat tightened. "Someone who will protect you." For the first time in months, I felt something I hadn't allowed myself to feel. Hope. Maybe I'd finally find a home. Maybe I'd find safety. Maybe... Maybe I'd even find my mother. The woman seemed to sense my thoughts. "Your hardships aren't over." The hope dimmed slightly. "But you won't face them alone anymore." I looked down. "Who is this person?" "They will be strong." The woman's voice became softer. "They will protect you, even when you push them away." That sounded oddly specific. "You have a habit of doing that." I frowned. "I do not." The woman laughed. "You absolutely do." Okay. Maybe I did. A little. "Please," she continued. "When this person comes into your life, let them in." I shifted uncomfortably. Trusting people had never exactly worked out for me. The longer we spoke, the more questions I had. Most importantly... Who was she? I still couldn't see anything except those glowing eyes. For all I knew, she could be working for Alpha Samuel. Maybe she was some kind of witch. Maybe she was the one who knocked me unconscious. Maybe— "You're overthinking again." I blinked. "Did you just read my mind?" "Technically, yes." I groaned. Wonderful. "Okay." I took a deep breath. "How do I know you're telling the truth?" Silence. "How do I know you're not working with Alpha Samuel?" More silence. "And how do I know you're actually my friend?" The woman let out a long sigh. "Fair questions." The glowing eyes moved closer. "I'll tell you my name." My heart sped up. "And I'll show myself to you." The darkness suddenly exploded with brilliant white light. I threw an arm over my eyes. After several seconds, my vision cleared. My breath caught. Standing before me was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. A wolf. Massive. At least six feet tall. Her fur was silver-white, almost glowing. Her crystal-blue eyes sparkled like gemstones. She looked like something straight out of a legend. Something heavenly. Something impossible. Normally, I would have run. Instead, I felt calm. Safe. As though I somehow knew she would never hurt me. The wolf smiled. Or at least I think she smiled. "My name is Angel." I stared. The name fit perfectly. "You look like your name." Her ears twitched. "You look like something from the heavens." A strange sadness crossed her eyes. "Thank you." Then her expression became serious. "There is one more thing." I straightened. "What?" "You must do exactly as I say next." My stomach tightened. "Okay..." Angel lowered her head. Her glowing blue eyes locked onto mine. And suddenly she roared with enough force to shake the darkness around us. "WAKE UP!"
