Chapter 11 - Megan

250 Words
We ran. The tunnel was narrow and damp, forcing us into single file. Max led the way. I stayed in the middle. Damien followed close behind. Too close. Every time his arm brushed mine, heat shot through my body. It made absolutely no sense. I couldn't feel a mate bond. I didn't even have a wolf. So why was my heart trying to beat its way out of my chest? Behind me, Damien suddenly growled. The sound vibrated through the tunnel. "What?" I hissed. "Quiet." His voice was barely above a whisper. Everyone froze. For several seconds, the only sound was our breathing. Then I heard it. Voices. Above us. Several wolves. "They found the building," Max muttered. A curse slipped from Damien's lips. "How many?" Max asked. Damien tilted his head slightly. "At least twenty." My stomach dropped. Twenty? There was no way we could outrun that many wolves. Damien looked over my head toward Max. "How much farther?" "Five minutes." Damien nodded. Then he looked directly at me. Those green eyes locked onto mine. For a split second, the rest of the world disappeared. Fear. Exhaustion. Confusion. All of it faded. "We're getting you out of here." The certainty in his voice stole my breath. I wanted to argue. Wanted to tell him I didn't need saving. Wanted to remind him we'd only known each other for five minutes. Instead, I found myself nodding. And for the first time since losing my mother... I didn't feel completely alone.
