"Damien?"
I stopped and turned toward her.
"Come here."
Suspicion immediately crossed her face.
"Why?"
I couldn't help but smile.
"Just trust me for a second."
She looked like she wanted to argue.
Again.
Eventually, she sighed dramatically and walked back toward me.
The moment she was close enough, I reached out and gently took her hand.
The reaction was immediate.
A powerful jolt shot through my body like lightning racing beneath my skin.
James growled in satisfaction.
Mate.
Megan gasped.
Her eyes widened.
For a brief second, the tough exterior she'd been hiding behind completely disappeared.
"What was that?" she whispered.
I carefully tightened my fingers around hers.
"That," I said quietly, "is why I know."
She stared down at our joined hands.
The connection was impossible to ignore now.
I could feel her heartbeat racing.
Could smell the confusion and disbelief rolling off her.
Most importantly...
I could tell she felt it too.
"This doesn't make sense."
Her voice sounded small.
Vulnerable.
My chest tightened.
"Megan, you've spent your entire life being told something was wrong with you."
She flinched.
Not because I was wrong.
Because I was right.
"But I don't think you're broken."
Those blue eyes lifted to meet mine.
I suddenly found myself wanting to destroy every person who had ever made her feel less than she was.
"You do feel the bond," I continued. "You just don't recognize it yet."
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
The forest around us seemed to disappear.
There was only her.
Only us.
Then, as if realizing how long she'd been holding my hand, Megan quickly pulled away.
The loss of contact felt immediate.
And painful.
"This is crazy," she whispered.
I laughed softly.
"Yeah."
James huffed.
Understatement of the century.
I watched her carefully.
Crazy or not...
The Moon Goddess had chosen her for us.
And no force on earth was going to take her away.
Not Samuel.
Not fate.
Not even Megan herself.
