Jimmy was well aware that a couple of girls were sleeping in his basement, but he’d done everything he could upstairs and needed to get into his workroom. He had packed a box with yarn that Doris managed to stash in their closet and, on the upper shelf, he’d found two more boxes filled with assorted fabric. He’d hauled her portable sewing machine out of the linen closet, as well as the ironing board and iron. He’d sat at the kitchen table and had another cup of coffee and a smoke and still not a sound from below. Must be nice to be able to sleep your days away.
