The thing was, they were like three separate planets orbiting around anything but each other. Their dad was a total basket case, Europe had turned Frankie into a snob and Bernadette wanted them to be closer but didn’t know how to unite them again as a family. The answer, she finally decided, was Thanksgiving dinner, impromptu as it was. It came to her in a flash on Saturday: if nobody acted as though they were happy then nobody would be happy. Naturally it followed that if nobody acted as though they were thankful nobody could see that, regardless of what had gone down, they were still f*****g lucky to have what they did.
