By the time the girls came through the door Bernadette had the soup warming on the stove. She was sitting at the table casually flipping through the television guide. Bernadette licked her finger and turned the page, engrossed. Frankie said, “Hi.” Bernadette lifted her head. Frankie’s friend was wearing a green gingham short suit and her hair was plaited like Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Where on Earth did Frankie find her? The girl waved her fingers at Bernadette. Bernadette waved her fingers at the girl. “You going to introduce us?” she asked Frankie. “I’m Robyn,” the girl piped up. “I’m Bernadette.” “My big sister,” Frankie said. “Where’s your mom?” Robyn asked. “Heaven. We think.” Bernadette winked. Robyn’s cheeks turned bright pink. “You didn’t say,” Robyn said to Frankie.
