Blake
“I know this must be hard for you, I know you must be upset and-”
“How could you possibly know how I feel?” She snaps at me, finally meeting my gaze, her smoldering eyes are full of anger and distrust.
“Obviously I don’t know exactly, but I can imagine you must be very sad”
“No. I’m not sad. I’m pissed off. I’m angry. I’m… I’m outraged. Sad is not even on my radar right now. I can’t be sad when all I can think of is how my life was stolen away from me and how I want to punish them” She grits through her teeth.
“Let me help” I smile
“What are you going to do?” She asks
“You want to watch them burn? The way they burned your family?” I ask
She nods, “What are you going to do? Burn them to the ground for me?” She chuckles spitefully
I shake my head, “No kitten, I’ll hand you the match and watch your back as you burn them yourself”. I take her small face in my hand, stroking my thumb over her cheek. She leans into it closing her eyes, her face flushing, I push her back against the cushions and grip her face harder as I lean in closer, our lips just a few inches apart. Her breath hitches and she locks her eyes on my lips, she wants me as much as I want her. I close the distance, smashing my lips into hers, exploring her.
A moan escapes her and fills me as my tongue slides between her teeth. I relish every inch of her, my hand still gripping her jaw while my other rakes through her hair. Her own hands are planted flat on my chest, gripping my t-shirt slightly.
Our kiss is cut short when my phone starts to ring in my pocket. As much as I want to ignore it, I can tell by the ringtone it is an emergency call. I sigh and reluctantly pull away from her.
“Sorry, I have to take this” I tell her as I pull my phone from my pocket.
I don’t register anything being said on the other end of the phone as I stare at Morgan, she’s clutching the blanket and staring at her feet. Her eyes are wide and doe like, a look I recognize from a girl caught off guard. I made quite a few girls look like that back in high school, dread fills me as I think of the possibility that was her first kiss.
“Blake, are you listening?” Ace says from the other end of the phone, calling my attention back to him
“Sorry what?”
“Leon just showed up, he’s been shot. He won’t let me take him to the hospital. He’s in a bad way man… I’m not sure what to do here” He sounds panicked, I can hear screaming of pain in the background.
“I’m on my way. Tell him to hold on”
I kneel down beside Morgan and take her face in my hands, “I have to go.. But.. I need to know something first”
“What?” Her eyes meet mine.
“Was that by chance your first kiss?”
“Was it that obvious?” She swallows hard, giving a weak nod.
“Not at all” I lean in and plant a soft kiss on her lips, deepening it slightly, she moans as I pull back. I smirk and lick my lips.
“I’ll be back soon”
I can hear Leon screaming like a banshee from outside the shop when I get there.
“Somebody shut him up already” Kyle yells from behind the counter as I step inside the back door.
“Let’s see how you handle it after being shot” I snap at him. I walk over to my brother and grasp his hand, letting him know I’m here.
I look at his shoulder which is mangled, the bullet looks like it’s embedded inside still, he;s losing a lot of blood. It already looks infected. He’s freezing cold and soaking wet, almost feels like he’s catching hypothermia by the shade of blue he’s turning.
“What the hell happened Leon?” I ask him
“Bikers…. B-Bridge… Guns…. J-Jumped” He stutters
“Someone get a damn blanket and some hot water. Jesus... he’s gonna freeze to death” I yell
“We gotta get the bleeding under control” Ace says
“Did anyone call Clifton?” I ask
Nobody answers, “Jesus, you guys. We pay the man to be on call for a reason. Call him, tell him we need him now!” I shake my head and turn back to my brother.
“It’s gonna be alright man. We got you”
An hour later the bullet is out and Leon is warmed up enough I’m not worried he’s going to freeze to death on us anymore. Leon has to wear a sling for a week while his arm heals, but other than that, he will be fine. Kyle went to the bridge where the failed hit went down to go get Leon’s bike and found it in pieces, like someone ran over it repeatedly with a truck so naturally Leon is pissed. He spent a lot of time working on that bike, it was like his baby. Now he has to start from scratch.
The next week goes by without incident, Morgan is still quiet and reserved but she’s coming around slowly. I can see Morgan is going stir crazy being inside cooped up all the time, as much as I try to keep her entertained there’s only so much I can do. There’s a very good chance if anyone finds out her real identity she could be in real danger, if the Conrads find out she is here they might try to come after her.
There’s too many possibilities, so for now it’s safer for her to stay hidden, but I can tell it’s taking its toll on her mentally. I’m picking up a few things from the mall when I walk past a pet shelter, seeing a sad looking kitten in the window. I stop to look at it, those big blue eyes stare back at me in a pathetic needy way. I fill out the adoption paperwork and pay the fees, cradling the small kitten in my arms as the lady tells me everything I need to know.
I make a stop at the pet store and buy a cat tree, a cat bed, food, toys and treats. Everything I can think of for a new kitten, I load it into the truck and head home. I sneak in the back with the carrier, setting it down by the laundry room, it meows softly.
I find Morgan in the kitchen,
“How was your day?” I ask as I come up behind her, placing my hands on her hips and kissing her neck softly.
She leans her head on my shoulder and sighs, “I’m so bored, I don’t know how much longer I can do this Blake. I’m going crazy... I miss my life, I know I didn’t have much but.. It’s the freedom I miss. I was able to go out and do things Blake. I wasn’t forced to stay inside all day everyday.. I can’t-” Her voice cracks and tears roll down her face.
“Hey, listen to me. This is not going to last forever. Okay? This is temporary. You will have your life back. A better life, I promise.
Next week you have an appointment to see about getting your cast off, you will have a lot more freedom after that, you will be able to walk the grounds freely, we have a tennis court, a pool. All at your disposal. In the meantime, I have something to cheer you up” I pull her by the hand and head her slowly to the laundry room.
Picking up the carrier and setting it on top of the washing machine, and open the door, the kitten cowers in the back of the carrier, scared to death.
“What is it Blake?” Morgan inches forward, looking inside, gasping when she sees the scared kitten.
“I thought you might need something to keep you company. Something that understands what you’re going through.. Something that can relate to you” It doesn’t take long for her to coax it from the carrier and into her gentle embrace.
“It’s beautiful… thank you.. What is it’s name?”’
“Whatever you want it to be sweetheart” I lean down and cup her face in my hand and bring her face up to meet mine and kiss her softly on the lips.
“It’s perfect, thank you” She whispers, snuggling the kitten to her chest. I can hear it purring in her arms.
