Chapter 4: The Invitation
Mei-Ling's parents arrived at her studio the next afternoon, unannounced. Her mother clutched her handbag, her father’s expression stern.
"We need to talk about your future, Mei-Ling," her mother said, glancing around the paint-splattered warehouse. "This... art thing can't go on forever."
Mei-Ling forced a smile. "I'm workin' on my art, Ma. It's goin' well."
"Goin' well doesn't pay bills," her father cut in. "You need a proper job. Something stable."
The tension crept in. Mei-Ling felt cornered, caught between their expectations and her dreams.
That's when Kaito stepped in. He'd come by to see her, and walked right into the middle of it.
"Actually," Kaito said smoothly, "I'd like to showcase her art in Tokyo. Tanaka has galleries there. Her work deserves a bigger stage."
Her parents paused. The mention of Tokyo, of Tanaka, caught them off guard.
"We'll see," her mother said finally, though her eyes looked intrigued.
Later that evening, Kaito walked Mei-Ling to her door. The air was thick with unsaid things.
"I'd like you to come to Tokyo with me," he said quietly. "To meet my family. They're traditional, but... I'd like you to come."
Mei-Ling's mind spun. Her parents would freak. This was huge. But looking at him, she couldn't say no.
"Yes," she whispered, smiling. "I'll come."
Kaito's face lit up. "Great. We'll fly in next week."
As he left, he texted her: _Packin' suitcase. Tokyo awaits._
Mei-Ling stared at the message, her heart racing. She was saying yes to Tokyo, to his family, to something massive. But as doubt crept in, she wondered: Was she ready for this?
