The unique thing about Malfunction and the short story that follows it in this collection, Ashday"s Child, is that they were written as completely standalone tales, but when I came to write my full-length novel, Timeshaft, I saw how I could link them and extend their storylines.
As I started to interweave the plots they quickly became the absolute lifeblood of Timeshaft.
There are two ways you can enjoy these two stories – either read them independently of Timeshaft, as separate tales, or skip them as individual tales and simply read Timeshaft.
However, I"ve found many people like to read them before Timeshaft, just to see if they can work out the link. And I can safely say that no-one has pulled out the right connection.
