**Depictions of violence and gore in this chapter. Please proceed with caution**
I was thrown into what felt like a never-ending
spiral of nothingness. There was no sense of time, no light, nothing. I had the
strange sensation that I had been falling, but there was no way to know how
long I had been falling for. I couldn’t tell if I had been falling for seconds
or hours. I didn’t feel fear, however. I felt the darkness was sort of a
comfort to me. I felt as if this is where I was supposed to be.
Soon
the darkness slowly started to lighten up until I was no longer in total darkness,
but rather a night sky. The stars were illuminating my way as I continued to
fall. The falling sensation continued for a few more moments before the dark
sky began to change into a clear blue sky. I tried to look around again, only
this time I was met with more color.
I
looked over my shoulder just in time for me to see that the ground was coming
in quick. I felt the panic start to rise as I shifted my body around so that I
could brace myself for impact. I placed my arms in front of my face, attempting
to shield myself. I closed my eyes tight and waited for an impact that never
happened.
Instead,
I glanced through a small opening between my arms that revealed I had stopped
just inches above the ground. I slowly reached out and placed my hands on the
luscious green grass that was below me. Once I braced my hands into the grass,
I slowly brought my knees down until I was on all fours in the grass.
I looked around, only to realize I was in an
unfamiliar open field. A dewy haze filled the air and was accompanied by the
smell of something burning that I couldn't quite place. I tried to see if there
were any landmarks that may have given me a sense of familiarity only to be let
down that there was nothing but piles of rubble in the distance that gave me no
sense of direction. I quickly got to my feet. Dirt and grass clung to my hands
and knees from the position I had landed in. I bent down to wipe it away, but
just as I started to clean myself off the sound of screams filled the air.
"Nyx? What's going on?" She was silent. I
couldn't even feel her presence now. What had that thing done to my wolf? I
could feel anger rise inside of me as I imagined never getting her back. It was
an anger that I had never felt before. It was like an invisible force was
pushing its way into my darkest moments and taking all the hatred I had ever
felt and pushing it out at this very moment.
"Stay calm Serena." I took a deep breath
in and slowly exhaled. This wasn't like me. I was the girl who never let her
feelings show as showing any emotion in a werewolf pack was usually seen as
weak and weakness was not tolerated amongst our kind. Another scream rang out
through the smoke-filled air. My whole body instantly stiffened at the sound.
This wasn't your frightened girl scream; this was your scared for your life
scream. I tried to hone in my senses to try to determine which way the screams
were coming from.
"Nice to see you're not completely gone
Nyx." My senses were still heightened, making me assume that my wolf was
still here, but some force had blocked us from communicating. I looked around
the area. It looked like a battlefield, but I still wasn't sure where. The only
sounds were that of the wind blowing around, and the occasional scream. I tried
to hone in on the direction the scream was coming from so I closed my eyes and focused
on listening.
The area remained quiet for a moment before another ear-piercing
scream rang out. I quickly opened my eyes and turned to run the direction of
the scream. I made my way through piles of burned down buildings, some were
still on fire. The smoke had begun to grow thicker, so I assumed I was heading
in the right direction. I ran through the destruction that had been left in the
wake of these monsters, hoping I hadn't missed the source of the screams.
As I made my way through the rubble, I started to
notice men lying naked on the ground, pools of blood had formed around their
mangled corpse. Most of them had their throats ripped out while others lie in a
heap that had been created from their entrails as they spilled from the gaping
wounds that had been created across their abdomens. I witnessed as the bodies
slowly started to increase in number the further, I pushed on. I suppressed the
urge to vomit as the sight before me had become even more gruesome.
Bodies of slain women were strewn around like rag
dolls. I witnessed whole families lying motionless on the ground as I stepped
passed the remains of their homes. My heart ached at the gruesome sight before
me. The closer I got to the source of the screams, I had noticed there were a
few people lying there, gasping for their last breaths. Blood would gurgle out
of their mouths with each exasperated outward breath. Some had their chest
cavities torn open, exposing their barely beating hearts.
I choked back tears as I slowly pushed forward. As I
rounded a corner, the screams became louder. The sound hit me almost like a
brick wall. I soon found myself staring at a group of five people along with
three wolves. One of the wolves had solid brown fur and hazel eyes. The one
standing next to him had an auburn shade of fur that covered most of his body
while white fur had tipped his ears and paws. His eyes were a honey color that
seemed to almost glow. The final wolf looked larger than the rest. No doubt he
held some type of rank.
The larger wolf, like the first wolf, had a deep
brown fur color. Only he had spots of light brown speckled throughout his coat.
His tail had an ombre effect where it faded from a dark brown at the base to a
light brown towards the tip. The wolf had something in his mouth, but from this
distance I couldn't make out exactly what it was. In the center of the group, a
frail looking woman was kneeling on the ground with her hands placed in her lap.
Her raven black hair was straight as a board. It looked matted up in spots,
like she hadn't had a proper bath in a while. The parts that remained straight
hung forward and covered her face as she bowed her head down. She wore a solid
white gown that reminded me of those gowns you must wear when you visit the
hospital.
A silver collar had been placed around her neck,
leading me to assume that she is a wolf as well. Silver is used to kind of
disable your wolf. As opposed to being stabbed with a silver blade or being
shot with a silver bullet, wearing a silver item is not deadly. It does irritate
the skin after prolonged wear, and it weakens your wolf so that you're not able
to shift. Normally silver collars are reserved for the extremely dangerous
criminals who are being transported from one place to another. This looks as if
they are using the collar to enslave this girl.
Another scream echoed throughout the forest,
breaking me of my train of thoughts. Soon one of the men that had been standing
there, placed a hand to his face and groaned. The man was tall and very
slender. He wore a solid black suit that had been well fitted to his form. His
hair was white as snow and his skin pale. He slid his hand down his face and
opened his eyes revealing a set of glowing red orbs. I felt my breath hitch in
my throat.
The only creature I know of with that would fit that
description has been extinct for centuries. The last Vampire had died in what
we call the "Trinity War". It was a massive war between the Vampires,
werewolves, and witches that lead to the extinction of the vampire race. Or so
we thought at least. The war is only written in textbooks, but rarely ever
spoken about as it's considered a taboo subject since the war was started by
the wolves. Not much is known about it other than the wolves and witches joined
forces to wipe out the vampires as they were seen as a threat to the entire
supernatural existence.
It's been said that the vampires had tried to take
over by turning humans at a rapid rate. The increase in the vampire population
didn't go unnoticed either. Apparently, the wolves noticed the human territories
around their pack lands had begun to dissipate, leading the elders of the pack
to dig into the issue. When they realized what was happening, they immediately
went to the witches for help. The witches refused stating that there had been
no spike in vampiric activity that would be alarming. This was the start of the
most gruesome war in history.
"Will someone shut her up for God’s sake."
One of the other men nodded before heading off in the opposite direction of the
group. I guess the pale man was the leader, or at least of some importance. I
found it strange that the wolves would listen to a vampire though. Something
felt strange about this whole situation.
"Please....just...let him go. And I'll do
whatever you want. Please." The woman in the center of the group began to
sob. Her frail body had begun to tremble.
"Ah, yes but if we let him go then we lose our
leverage. So, you see, having him assures me that you follow my every
command." The vampire spoke up again.
"I... I’ll sign a contract or pledge an
allegiance. Just anything to let him go." The vampire took a step towards
her. He pulled his pants leg up just a little so that he could comfortably
squat in front of the woman on the ground.
"You see, the issue I'm having would be that we
have tried this route before. And how did that turn out?" The woman let
out a loud sob. How long had she been with these people?
"I won't do it again. I swear to you." The
woman looked up. I gasped in shock as her eyes became visible. I had never seen
anything like them. Her eyes were blue, but not just any blue. They were bright
blue, almost like an electric blue color. They were brighter than anyone I had
ever seen before. Her black hair complimented the blue eyes so well. I was
mesmerized by her. Even though she had been malnourished and fragile looking,
she was still the most beautiful creature I had even laid eyes on.
"Yes, I know you won’t. That is why we have
him. This is our assurance that we get your complete cooperation in this
matter." The vampire made a hand motion towards the wolf who had the item
in his mouth. I squinted a little trying to focus on what he was holding. My
eyes widened in shock when I made out the form of a small child no older than
seven. The boy had been asleep or tranquilized and had not moved. The wolf held
onto him by his shirt collar, leaving the boy kind of dangling off the ground.
I felt sick to my stomach. How could someone be so ruthless as to use a child
as a pawn? What kind of sick game was he playing!?
"Please just...don't hurt him. I'll do
anything!" She started sobbing again. Her head fell in defeat as the tears
began to stream down her face.
"Very well. If you follow my every order, the
boy will be spared. No harm will come to him so long as you hold up your end
this time." The vampire stood back up to his feet. His voice was gentle
yet held an authoritative tone.
"Thank you." She said in a small whisper
that had been barely audible to me.
"However, "His voice lowered as he
pretended to look over his nails, "if I find that you are being...less
than cooperative, I will not hesitate to give you a little...persuasion shall
we say." His mouth curved up into a wicked smile. Soon the other member
had returned from dealing with the screaming woman and stood next to the other
men. None of them moved an inch unless they were instructed to do so. I guess
this vampire holds a lot more power than I though.
"I understand." The woman managed to sob
out. I felt bad seeing someone in this position. My heart ached for her. I
wanted nothing more than to go free her from his tyrannical rule. I felt the
anger rise inside of me again, this time more intense. Soon my feet were moving
on their own. I made my way over to the group slowly. Without making a sound, I
managed to sneak up behind the wolf that was holding the boy. I reached my
hands out to grab onto the wolf’s neck. Just as I was about to wrap my hands
around his throat, the world had faded around. The ground beneath me slowly
started to rematerialize and the open field I had just been standing in had
been replaced by a forest.
