The emotions crossed the Alpha’s face in a flash. He quickly shook them off before smiling across the table at us both. I would never have guessed they would have been old enough to have a child my age. They both looked so young. A lot younger than Alpha Hendrix, that’s for sure.
“I’m so sorry for your loss.” I say to break the silence that has since lingered between us. He nods at me.
“Thank you. It hasn’t been easy. I wouldn’t wish that heartache to even my worst enemy.” His voice cracks just a little before he regains his composure.
“If you’ll excuse us Alpha, we have some important matters to attend to. It was great meeting you! You as well Luna.” They both smile at us. The Alpha gives us a slight nod as Stella stands. She smiles back at them before taking me by the arm and rushing us out the back door of the packhouse.
“What’s you hurry?” Of course, I already knew the answer, she was excited to meet Nyx.
“Oh, don’t play coy with me now missy!” She gripped onto my arm a little tighter as she picked up her pace. I tried to match my pace to hers so that she wasn’t just pulling me behind her like a rag doll. I could feel her excitement rolling off her. I knew I would be in for it big time once her excitement wore off though. After all, she has been my best friend and I hid the biggest secret of all from her.
She made her way through the forest, ducking and dodging limbs and small shrubs as she pulled me along. After what felt like an eternity, we made it to a clearing in the woods. This place was beautiful. I can’t believe I didn’t know about it. Stella stopped and dropped my hand.
“I found this place a few weeks ago. It looked untouched, so this is where I would come to calm down when I needed a clear head.” I stood there just looking around. The place was something straight out of a fairytale. The whole place was almost encircled by the surrounding hills, there’s only one entrance, aside from the top. The far back end had a large waterfall that cascaded down the rocks and into a cerulean blue pool below. Beautiful flowers of every color and shape surrounded the sides of the pool, giving it an almost magical feel.
A large log was placed directly in front of the large pool, making it the perfect spot for sitting and just watching the beauty of nature. The surrounding area was nothing but lush green grass, a few tall trees lined along the outskirts of the meadow felt as if they were guarding over the place. I could see why Stella loved this place now. It was picture perfect.
“I can’t believe this has been hidden here all this time.” She took my hand and guided me towards the waters edge. I stared down at our reflection and smiled. She let out a giggle before stepping back and quickly shifting into her wolf. Stella’s wolf had always amazed me. She was a larger than average she wolf with sandy brown fur. Her eyes were a dark emerald green and really stood out against her fur. For Stella to not have Alpha blood in her, her wolf sure looked the part of an Alpha.
“Hello Genesis.” She rubbed her snout against my cheek before I felt a large wet tongue slide against my whole side of my face. I couldn’t help but giggle. Genesis had to be my favorite wolf out of everyone else here. She was such a kind spirit and would help anyone in need. Her mate would be one lucky guy to have her, that’s for sure. Genesis nudged me with her snout, trying to get me to bring Nyx out. I knew she was excited to meet her as well. Stella didn’t let a lot of people meet Genesis, because then they would start asking questions that none of us knew the answers to. Such as why her wolf is almost as big as an Alpha or why her fighting skills far exceeded that of even the best warriors.
“Ok, ok. Give me just a second.” She sat down in front of me and huffed. I couldn’t help but giggle at her little temper tantrum.
“Ready?” I asked Nyx.
“Are you kidding?! I never get out to play, let alone with another wolf, and you’re asking if I’m ready?!” I laughed at her before getting down on all fours. I felt the transformation start to take place as my face elongated into that of a snout. My back snapped and cracked to rearrange each individual piece. I felt the claws start to take place of where my fingers should be. Before I could blink, I had shifted. I loved that Nyx had the ability to make the shifts painless.
I looked down at Genesis who had her head bowed in submission. That’s weird. Usually bowing shows signs of being in the presence of someone of a higher rank. I’m just a Gamma whereas Stella has Beta blood. Last I checked, stella outranked me.
“Rise.” Nyx’s voice was full of authority as she stared down at Genesis. To my surprise, Nyx could communicate while being in wolf form without having to mind link the other person. Genesis stared up at me in disbelief. I watched as she trailed her eyes up and down, taking in the full extent of my wolf. I knew Nyx was large but seeing her up next to Genesis really put it into perspective of how large she really is.
Nyx slowly circled Genesis, getting a feel for her and making sure she’s not a threat. Genesis stood as still as a statue as the large wolf circled her, never moving a muscle. After a good five minutes of Nyx inspecting our friend, she gave her a light nudge. Genesis’s ears perked up as she took that as a sign that Nyx was wanting to play.
“Wow!” Stella’s voice broke through my mind link.
“What?” I asked.
“Your wolf! What’s her name?” I smiled.
“Nyx. She’s gorgeous right?”
“Nyx. Such a strong name. It suits her though. I understand why your hair and eyes are that color now too.” I smiled. I don’t know why I was so scared of showing her my wolf. Well, I don’t know why my wolf wanted to stay hidden as she was obviously no stranger to other wolves.
“Yeah. She decided she wanted me to match her.” I giggled. Nyx and Genesis ran around for about two hours just rolling around in the grass and playing. It felt nice to not have to keep this secret from Stella any longer. I wasn’t sure why Nyx needed to keep herself hidden, but each time I asked, she would tell me it’s not time.
Genesis made her way to the edge of the pond where she flopped down. I could see her panting from here whereas Nyx still hadn’t even broken a sweat. Genesis practically dunked her head into the water. I couldn’t help but giggle. Seems like Stella was matched with a wolf that fit her personality perfectly. Nyx took the opportunity to sit at the waters edge and lap up the cool water. When we looked back up, we were met with a very naked Stella standing in front of the water, just staring at us.
“May I?” She asked as she reached a hand towards us slowly. Nyx nodded and held her head down for Stella to touch. I watched as she ran her fingers through my white fur. Stella focused intently on every hair as it ran between her fingers. She was transfixed on me. Nyx didn’t mind though. She was enjoying the attention.
“Nyx…you know what you are?” Stella asked in a hushed tone.
“I do, yes.” Nyx replied.
“Is that why you’ve remained hidden?” Nyx slowly nodded her head. What was she talking about? What is Nyx? How does Stella know about something I don’t even know about yet? A million questions started filling my head. I had so much I wanted to know. Maybe I could get Stella to tell me since I couldn’t get anything out of Nyx. I felt my wolf huff at my suggestion. She made Stella jump back a little and bow her head down.
“I apologize.” Nyx let out a small laugh at her actions.
“It’s not you. Your wolf knows me, knows about me and why I am here. However, Serena does not. At least not yet. So, I am afraid we will have to ask that neither of you speak of me to a soul. Do you understand?” Why would Nyx do this? What was she talking about? Stella nodded in response to Nyx’s question.
Soon I felt Nyx pulling me back towards the surface, telling me it was time to shift back. I quickly took the reigns and returned to my human form. One of the perks of having Nyx as a wolf was that I didn’t have to strip to shift as my clothes always remained in tack somehow. I giggled as I watched Stella drop her mouth in amazement.
“Must be nice.” She mumbled as she went to the log and picked up a set of clothes. I guessed she had kept these items here for special occasions. Makes sense, I guess. Even though we’re wolves and nudity isn’t all that uncommon amongst us, we sill wouldn’t want to have to walk all the way back to the packhouse in the nude.
“I mean, it kind of is. Keeps me from having to buy a new wardrobe every other week.” Stella laughed at my bad joke.
“So, am I the only one who knows about your wolf?” She sat down on the log and looked out at the lake in front of us. I made my way towards her and took my seat beside her. I watched as she picked up a small rock and tossed it across the water’s surface. It skipped a few times before sinking down below the surface.
“No. I told my parents shortly after my appearance started to change.” She didn’t speak for a few minutes. Instead, she simply picked up another rock and tossed it again. This one skipped a little further before it came to a halt and simply sunk.
“I can imagine they were surprised. I mean a white wolf is super rare.” I nodded. I wasn’t sure how to respond. I feel like I should have told Stella the moment I found out about Nyx, but I was scared she wouldn’t be able to keep her a secret. Nyx agreed as well. I think now was a perfect time as Stella seems o have matured a lot over these last few years. I just hope I was making the right decision with telling her now.
“It was a shock. They didn’t believe me either, so I had to take them out to the woods behind our house to let them meet Nyx.” She smiled as she thought of my parents’ reaction to my wolf.
“Were they excited?” I nodded.
“Very. Well, they had a lot of mixed feelings about it, but Nyx explained it to them.”
“Right. So, Nyx won’t tell you what’s going on?” I shook my head no.
“All she tells me is that we’re very important and will find out soon. That’s all I get from her. Other than the occasional reminder not to let anyone know she’s here.”
“Ya know, there’s legends of white wolves. Although no one has ever actually seen one.”
“Yeah, when I realized Nyx was solid white, I started digging. Not that it did any good. I couldn’t find anything other than a few stories.” Suddenly Stella’s head snapped towards me. Her usually cheerful expression had changed from that of excitement to that of solitude. I watched in horror as her blue irises gave way to a glowing red shade. I felt as the color had drained from my face the moment I realized what was happening.
“Serena do not be afraid. I mean you no harm.” Stella’s lips were moving, but the voice coming from her was not hers. It was something deep, yet gentle. I felt frightened but not terrified.
“Stella?” She shook her head no.
“Stella is safe, no worries. I have come with a message.”
“A message? From whom?”
“Think of it as a gift from the universe.” Stella shrugged her shoulders.
“Ok? And what exactly is this message?” Stella, or rather the creature inhabiting Stella, smiled at me before reaching her hands out to me. One of her palms caressed my left cheek while the other hand held two fingers directly on the center of my forehead. I felt a quick jolt of electricity flood through me before I was thrown into a black abyss.
