My alarm suddenly goes off jolting me awake. I roll over and hit snooze. I’m not a fan of early mornings and I really do not have to get up until around 2pm. But I do have house chores to get done. My alarm starts buzzing and yet again I hit snooze. It’s my birthday I really don’t want to go downstairs and face my family. No one and I truly mean no one in my family has ever celebrated my birthday. Grumbling, I can’t lay in bed anymore, so I get up throw on some yoga pants and a plain t-shirt with some socks, I’m just going to clean so there’s no real point in shoes.
Pulling my hair up as I head downstairs, I make a mental note of the mess my siblings have left behind. I hear Jax come up behind me and instantly I make myself as flat against the wall as I possibly can. He rushes past me and still knocks me down a few steps. “Move your ass!” he shouts as he runs past me. I sign as I continue down the stairs heading into the kitchen. I just want one birthday where someone acknowledges me. I don’t foresee that ever happening.
I head over to the sink and start doing the pile of dishes that my parents and brothers left from making their breakfast and get started on washing them. I overhear my brothers talking about the alpha and the party he’s hosting in a few days. Our alpha does not have a mate yet so rumor has it that the party is being used so he can find his mate. I doubt I will be able to go as I don’t have much of a closet and I most definitely doubt my parents would want me to attend.
While continuing to do the dishes I stare out the window and daydream about the possibility of going. What would I even wear to an event like that? I’m suddenly snapped back to reality when I feel an intense burning across my hand. The slice across my palm is bleeding, I run my hand under cool water to ease the burning sensation. I know it’ll be healed in a few minutes, so I just stand there letting the water run over it. “Way to go Wren,” I mumble to myself. Once fully healed I carry on and finish washing the dishes and get started on tidying the rest of the kitchen. After doing so I make a ham and cheeses sandwich for myself and try to decipher what’s next on my list.
Considering the mound of laundry I’ve been neglecting, I roll my eyes at that thought and head to the living room to tidy that up. Moving room to room I clean, occasionally dodging my brothers throwing random bits of garbage at me to pick up. They don’t hurt me much like they did when we were kids. Now it’s more like I’m treated as a live-in maid. I don’t mind, it’s a lot more tolerable than the physical abuse that used to take place. Several hours have passed and I am finally finished with all the cleaning for the day including laundry. Suddenly there is a knock on our front door and I hear Jax answer it. A few minutes later I hear him grumbling “But she’ll ruin it, you sure you want Wren at that party?” With that I hear him slam the door shut on the poor person who was standing there.
Begrudgingly I see him walking over to me, he throws the letter at me. He throws me one of his meanest looks, “You’ll just make a fool out of yourself there. You might as well stay home. Not like Alpha’s going to want some maid!” With that he walks off. Jax and Jett are warriors, so it’s no wonder that they’ll be at the party. They try everything under the sun to not be seen around me. Before we all graduated they would say I was not related to them. My entire family likes to drive home the point that I was never wanted
My cleaning was finished for the day so I take my letter and head to my room. I barely get into my room and shut the door as I hear my brothers come racing up the stairs, there is no doubt in my mind they’re going to the game room. I sigh as I didn’t get the upstairs cleaned today knowing they’ll be leaving an awful mess for me in there. I set the letter on my bed for later and gather my towels and head for a shower.
After my shower I head back to my room, sitting on my bed in while still wrapped in my towel I read the letter. It is addressed to me which I find odd. I roll my eyes, its more than likely some family member that remembered my birthday. I chuckle because I know the reality of that is slim to none. I go ahead and open the letter and pull out an invitation.

I’m entirely confused as to why the invitation was directed at me and not my brothers. Maybe they got their own in the mail? I put the letter on my desk and get my night clothes on. What would I even wear? Surely yoga pants and a t-shirt won’t cut it. I decide to go through my closet and find some of my better-looking clothes. I managed to find a pair of dress slacks and a nude-colored shirt that cuts into a deep V. I set them aside as the party is next week and go to bed.
