Chapter Thirty The next morning, Clarence stood hiding behind the office door, waiting for his chance. The office lady was on break. No one could see him, or so he hoped. Buttons on his dark shirt scraped against the door. Damn! He sucked in his stomach and held his breath. Silence. With the morning he'd had already, he wasn't sure he'd ever come back. Miss Henningway had knocked loudly on his door, waking him, and announced he was getting a haircut today—his greasy, long hair was gone. She had rounded up Lisha and two maintenance men to hold him down. He had hollered about his rights as a resident, a citizen of the United States. And he was a lawyer—he could sue their asses. He cussed until they were done and were sweeping up his hair. Even his ears burned. Damn them all to hell! He
