An owl sat lazily on a lower branch of a tree, its huge eyes shining in the dark.
The moonlight is bright enough to see anything.
Squirrels wandered around the tree, searching for food and then suddenly the owl flew off, leaving the squirrels scared and searching for a hiding spot.
The silent forest is no longer silent, there are thuds like multiple animals running, probably a group of deer.
A wolf sped past one of the squirrels, then two wolves, three wolves, four wolves...
It's a chase. The first wolf was being chased. They were getting closer to the highway, which was her plan; she could hear cars moving.
The chase was supposed to end since she's close to the human world. She looked back and saw it was just one wolf, the rest had retreated.
Rosa was getting tired, she's been running for miles. She was banished from the wolf world, and normally, they would chase her halfway, but this turned out different.
"Were they trying to kill her?" Her mind raced, her heart beating like it's about to explode. She is a fast wolf, not so strong but very fast.
But her last chaser was closing in; he is a bigger wolf, obviously and has more endurance.
She could hear his paws hitting the leaves, he was gaining on her fast. She felt he could reach out to her with his teeth if he wanted but he didn't. Probably he was tired too.
"Yes! The highway"
She ran into the highway without hesitation, hoping he was no longer behind her. She halted in the middle of the road. A car was coming at full speed, the driver flashed her multiple times, thinking the animal would leave, but she didn't move, blinded by the light, she stayed on the spot.
The driver slammed his brakes hard and tried to dodge the wolf but it was too late. Manoeuvring at such speed would flip his truck and get him stuck on this isolated highway.
He could smell his tires burning. With a loud thud, he hit the wolf, but not as hard as it would have been.
"Good Lord!" He muttered, while trying to control his breath.
He dimmed his light and put the car in park, also grabbed his phone, maybe he's going to need to call 911 to get the dead wolf away from the highway.
He dialled 911.
"Geez!" He screamed, almost tripping from shock.
Instead of a wolf, he saw a human, a naked lady, shivering and badly injured.
"911, what's your emergency?" the woman's voice echoed in her ears but he was far gone.
"Errmm, I dialed it by mistake, sorry, " he ended the call abruptly, from losing his job in the afternoon to hitting a woman now. He had taken a few beers earlier, another reason not to involve the police. His eyes were still fixed on the woman. Calling 911 would get him in trouble and he can't leave her to die, especially not when he is the reason she's wounded.
He was supposed to fix his brake pads a day before but never had the time to.
"Miss, " he tugged her gently, but she didn't respond; her body was cold, and it looked like she was dying.
He needs to act fast before she stops breathing. He held her hand tight for a second, and she moved slightly, groaning in pain.
Palmer removed his coat and covered her naked body. He carried her carefully and turned back to the car but his senses told him they're being watched.
He turned back.
A Big wolf stood just before the highway, half of its body covered by the bush. Its blue eyes watched them anxiously.
Palmer didn't move, and a minute seemed like an eternity.
Suddenly the wolf turned and ran at full speed back into the wild. Leaving Palmer amazed.
Maybe that was the wolf he thought he had hit.
"But how did this lady get here?"
The confusion thickens in his head.
Rosa stirred in his arm, and he immediately turned back to the car.
He grabbed the door but it wouldn't open.
"My key?" He said aloud. He couldn't find it.
He needs to hurry and leave the scene before a car passes or even a cop on night patrol.
He dropped her carefully on the car hood and rummaged for his car keys in his pocket, but it was nowhere to be found.
He searched the floor, but still couldn't find it.
Palmer knew he could be in trouble at this point.
Out of frustration, he went for the last resort.
He grabbed a tree branch nearby and smashed the car's glass.
He bent down and cut the ignition wire,
"One of the advantages of driving an older car, " he thought in his mind.
A car light flashed faintly from afar. It made him jump.
"The girl!"
He rushed back to the bonnet and carried her, not so carefully this time, because he was now at risk of being seen by someone. It could even be a cop.
He sat her in the passenger seat next to his. He heard a key.
It had been in his coat pocket all along.
He grabbed the key and inserted it but the car won't start.
The car is closer to them now but it's not speeding.
He knew at this point it was a cop, probably someone had called the cops, and they're trying to scan the area.
They turned the ignition again, all to no avail.
"The wire!" He almost cried out.
He joined the wire hurriedly and turned the ignition, the car jumped and started working.
The cop didn't see them, he had stopped a few meters away and was looking into the nearby bush with his torch.
Immediately the car started, he flashed his torch.
Palmer put the car in drive and drove away, looking at the cop rushing back into his car through the mirror.
The cop put on his siren and followed them.
