The courtyard buzzed with the sound of hundreds of students, all lined up neatly in their uniforms. The first Monday assembly of the term was serious business at Moonlight Academy—no one dared show up late. Ariella adjusted her blazer nervously, wishing she could disappear into the crowd.
The principal’s voice boomed from the stage. “We have a new student joining us this semester. Please welcome Ariella Park.”
Every head turned.
Ariella’s cheeks burned as whispers spread across the rows. She’s so tall… Is she foreign? Look at her skin… She forced a smile, clutching her school bag like a shield.
And then—out of nowhere—Min-Jae’s voice rang out. “Whoa, principal, are you sure she’s a student? She looks like a model!”
The courtyard erupted with laughter. Ariella’s ears turned red. The principal frowned, but Min-Jae just flashed his mischievous grin, leaning on his friend’s shoulder like the class clown he was.
But not everyone laughed. From the front row, Joon-Ha finally turned his head. For the briefest second, Ariella caught his eyes: sharp, unreadable, and cold. Then he turned back, expressionless, as though she didn’t exist.
The principal cleared his throat. “That will be enough. Park Ariella, we hope you’ll find your place here.”
Ariella bowed quickly and rushed to her line. Her heart raced—half embarrassed, half annoyed. And yet, deep inside, a strange thought nagged her. Was Joon-Ha judging me? Or was that look something else entirely?

Classroom Tension
By second period, Ariella thought things couldn’t get worse. She was wrong.
The teacher clapped her hands. “Group project time! This term, each of you will work in pairs. Since Park Ariella is new, I’ll assign her partner.”
Ariella held her breath.
“Joon-Ha.”
Gasps broke out across the classroom. Heads swiveled between Ariella and the top-ranked student in the academy.
Joon-Ha raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
Before Ariella could react, Min-Jae shot up from his seat. “Wait, what? No way! Why does she get Joon-Ha?” He jabbed a finger toward Ariella. “She should be with me—I’m way more fun!”
The class burst into giggles. The teacher frowned. “Sit down, Min-Jae. This isn’t a popularity contest.”
“But—!”
“Do you want detention?”
Grumbling dramatically, Min-Jae dropped into his chair. He leaned back with a sigh loud enough for half the class to hear. “Fine. But don’t come crying to me, Ariella, when you realize your ‘perfect partner’ is basically a robot.”
Heat rushed to Ariella’s face again. She dared a glance at Joon-Ha. He was calmly flipping through his notebook, ignoring the chaos as though none of it concerned him.
Great, Ariella thought bitterly. My first partner, and he doesn’t even care I exist.

Cafeteria Chaos
By lunchtime, Ariella wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed. She carried her tray into the cavernous cafeteria, eyes scanning for a safe spot. Most tables were already full of chattering groups. Her stomach knotted.
Finally, she slipped into an empty corner table and began poking at her rice.
That was when a tray clattered onto the table in front of her.
“Mind if I join?” Min-Jae grinned, sliding into the seat opposite her without waiting for an answer. “Actually, even if you mind, too late—I’m here.”
Students at nearby tables immediately perked up, whispering and stealing glances. Ariella felt her pulse quicken.
“Why are you sitting here?” she asked.
“Because it’s lonely eating by yourself,” Min-Jae said, dramatically biting into his fried chicken. “And because I’m saving you from becoming cafeteria gossip. Trust me, these people notice everything.”
Ariella frowned. “Isn’t sitting with me making me gossip-worthy?”
“Exactly,” Min-Jae said with a wink. “Better to be talked about for sitting with me than for being a mystery loner. You’re welcome.”
Ariella stared, half-annoyed, half-amused. He was ridiculous. But she couldn’t deny—the knot in her stomach loosened a little.
Then, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted movement.
Joon-Ha, walking past with his tray.
For a moment, their eyes met again. His jaw tightened, just slightly, before he strode away to sit with the top-ranking students at the center table. He didn’t look back.
But Ariella noticed his hand gripping his fork a little too tightly.

The Announcement
The buzz of conversation hushed as a teacher stepped onto the cafeteria stage with a microphone.
“Students, this semester’s highlight event will be the Moonlight Competition—a test of teamwork, skill, and school spirit. Every student must participate, and you’ll compete in pairs.”
Excitement rippled across the room. Ariella’s pulse quickened.
The teacher continued, “Pairs will be finalized by the end of this week. Prepare yourselves.”
Min-Jae leaned across the table, eyes sparkling. “You hear that? Perfect chance for us to team up.”
Before Ariella could respond, a voice cut in—cold, firm.
“She’s already my partner.”
Ariella turned. Joon-Ha stood a few steps away, tray in hand, his expression unreadable. But his eyes… his eyes were fixed directly on her.
The cafeteria went silent.
Min-Jae smirked, leaning back in his chair. “Oh? Now you suddenly care?”
The air between the two boys crackled with tension. Students held their breath, sensing the drama unfolding.
Ariella sat frozen, caught between them, her heart hammering. She’d wanted a quiet fresh start. Instead, she was now the center of the rivalry everyone would be watching.
And this was only the beginning.
