Chapter 1: Night Shift It was 2am. The hospital was quiet. Too quiet. Lina Cruz was 23. She was a nursing student. At night she worked as a Nursing Assistant to pay for school. She liked helping people. She was kind, and she worked hard. The ER doors opened fast. “Car crash! 3 patients coming in!” a nurse shouted. Lina ran. Her heart was beating fast. Dr. Kade Morrow was already there. He was 35. He was an ER doctor. People said he was cold and serious. But he was also one of the best doctors in the hospital. He looked tired. Blood was on his scrubs. “Pressure?” he asked. “Low,” another nurse said. Lina moved fast. She gave IVs. She brought blankets. She talked to the scared family in the waiting room. She didn’t freeze. She just did her job. After 30 minutes, the patient went to surgery. It got quiet again. Kade took off his gloves. He looked at Lina. “You did good,” he said. It was only three words. But Lina felt warm inside. Then he walked away. Lina looked down. There was blood on her shirt. She didn’t know it yet… but her life was about to change.
