Without much hesitation, more like after she was done scanning through my inner most facial expression and saw that I wasn’t ready to interrupt her, she then carried on with whatever she had to say.
“This is Martin, he is going to be your new father” she announced, smiling like it was good news.
My throat had started to get dry even after the amount of water I had downed while eating. In the actual sense I was taking more of water than the food, and this always happened to me whenever I was tensed.
I reached for the water across from me, as if on cue...I started to cough violently.
The news was one to cough for. I actually didn’t see that coming. At least for a start she should have just called her boyfriend or even just a friend.
I wasn’t ready to accept the fact that I would be having a new Daddy, especially one who wasn’t even my biological father. I could already picture him being so mean and evil-hearted just like in the movies, where most Step-mothers treated their step-daughters badly. The thought alone gave me cold feet.
“Are you okay? Here take this” My mum tried handing me the glass of water after she tried pouring it out from the yellow jug she had purchased on the eve of Easter.
Her colleague in the hospital also dealt in house wares, so being the good friend, mum gladly patronized her. She did not like displeasing people. She never wanted to be tagged as someone that could ever say "No" to people. So typical Olivia bought the ware..."fine fabula"
Taking it from her I uttered a mellow “Thank you”.
“I tt...t think I nee..ed to use the restroom” I stuttered not bothering to find out if they understood what I had said.
Without waiting for anybody's approval, I swiftly started for my room being cautious not look back at the people I was leaving behind.
After that day, the rest that happened became history. Those moments were never close to being nostalgic, for some peculiar reasons I didn't quite get along with Martin.
Months into his relationship with Olivia, he slowly started to out of his shell . The shell seemed so porous, it looked like he couldn't get to hide his through intents, hence his total break out.
He started by finding fault in the slightest thing Olivia did, to yelling and scolding her, and then finally graduated to making up reasons for hitting her till she bled from either orifices till she passed out.
Olivia became a punching bag within months of letting this man into her house. She subsequently started to distance herself from me for reasons I couldn't even get to understand.
Martin was no doubt doing drugs, he was always high on something. Maybe Codeine or methamphetamine. You know? Something of that sort. To me it didn't seem normal for a man after beating a woman comes back to ask for her forgiveness and again turns around to repeat the same act.
It was more or less an emotional torture.
A reverse psychology need I say.
****
Coming back to my present state after shabbly recounting all that happened during the past two years, I already made my assumptions that Martin must have been the killer and if I didn't find somewhere to run to, I most likely would be next.
Scrolling through my texts to check out texts my mum sent me the night before. I realized that she was trying to communicate something to me. I felt that maybe she knew she was going to die one way or other.
In the text, she had said that whatever she was passing through was just a sacrifice for the atonement of what she did in the past. Whatever that meant, It didn't sound good. She went ahead to plead with me to take the box along side and run far away from home. Away from Drem Town.
She didn't divulge what the box was all about or how I would be able to find it. This was probably typical Olivia giving me a puzzle.
I started for her room in search of the mystery box. Finally making it to the door of her room, I heard a sound. It was coming from outside, I was already panicking and without further hesitation, I swiftly ran into her room while making a mental note to lock the door.
The ransacking continued, It seemed like the burglar was looking for something. There wasn't any precious stone mum kept in her possession to begin with. Last I checked, we were just a mediocre family. We didn't have much time offer. So whatever the intruder was looking for must be something else, I finally concluded.
I too started with quietly ransacking my mum's room. Olivia in the message didn't really give me directions on how to find the box. Whatever was inside must be important. And that mere thought gave me more reasons to keep looking till I found the supposed treasure.
I searched from one corner of the room to the other. I forgot to mention that Olivia had a walk in closet. It was so huge and discouraging to begin looking for anything in there. Just as I made to begin the search, I heard a banging on the door and for every minute, the psycho out there increased the intensity.
"Who the Motherfucker is in there"? The voice was so muffled that I couldn't trace it to any descent.
I tried not to make a single sound. I thought of the next line of action to take, and all I could come up with was to leave the house.
To RUN!
Or this man outside there would snuff life out of me with whatever weapon he had on him.
Without thinking twice, I opened the window slides and within swift seconds I was all the way down.
I was running for my dear life. I didn't want to end up like my mum. It hurt me to know that I couldn't find the box, neither could I decipher what the content was all about.
I assured myself that someday, I was going to find out one way or the other who the killer was. I kept running without looking back. I just had to leave Drem town for good.
One thing was for sure, Martin was not the killer, but atleast he knew the killer. They must have a connection of some sort. Yes! He knew the man that almost killed me.
Now remembering that the burglar's accent sounded so much like Martin's. The way Martin spoke was so obvious that he wasn't from around here. He most definitely wasn't from Drem town. Who these people were, I would definitely find out even with the last breath in me, but only if I find my way out of this town.
