“Don’t forget, Mr. Mason knows all your dirty little secrets.” Ugly gestured with the book and Webb flinched. “So, shall I be telling Mr. Mason you accept his proposal?” Webb swallowed, his throat bobbing. He gave a shaky nod and said, “Please tell Mason, it would be my honor.” He wet his lips and tried for a smile, but it collapsed in on itself, turning into a toothy grimace. Ugly left. Elis legged it out the back door, nearly knocking over one of the clean-up lads as he ran past. They called after him but didn’t give chase. Elis didn’t know if they would run and tell Webb they’d allowed someone to sneak inside, but he doubted they’d dare, too scared of losing their jobs. Elis raced around the front through a side alley. Ugly was already halfway up the street. Elis stuck to the shadows
