Chapter Seven: Blood and Bond

931 Words
The confrontation came at dusk. By the time Marcus brought her to the hill, Vera already knew. The truth sat heavy in her chest - hard, cold, undeniable. The witness. The letters. The knife. She had seen enough. Heard enough. There was no going back to who she had been that morning. Below them, the border stretched like a line drawn in blood between Crescent and Shadow territory. Vera stood beside Marcus, her heart beating too fast, her thoughts louder than the wind. From the trees, her father’s people emerged. Klaus stepped forward at the front, Tyler at his side. At least thirty warriors followed behind them, some in human form, others pacing in wolf bodies, low and tense. Her father looked exactly the same. That was the worst part. Vera felt sick. She had spent the time with Marcus looking at proof. They had letters and smells. One of Klaus's warriors had confessed. The truth was clear and facing her father was hard. Marcus touched her hand. Then he stepped forward. His voice was loud. "Klaus, you came for your daughter. She is okay, we both know this is not just about her." Klaus got angry. He started to change into a wolf. His claws came out. "You took her the night before her mating ceremony. Give her back or we will take her with blood." Vera stepped out from behind Marcus. Her eyes were blazing clearly showing anger. Her voice was loud and resounding. "Father did you kill Mother?" The question was like a knife. Everyone got quiet. Klaus's face got hard. "Marcus has filled your head with ideas. Come home Vera. We will finish the ceremony with Tyler. Everything will be fine." Vera said "No". Her voice was shaking. "I saw the letters. I smelled your smell on them. You framed the Shadow Pack. You killed her for land and power." Tyler looked uncomfortable and surprised at the same time. He did not say anything. Klaus got very angry. "You believe the enemy over your family? After everything I did for you?" Vera felt hurt. Tears fell from her eyes. She looked up. "I believed you my whole life. That stops now." Then everything got crazy. Klaus. Charged. He changed into a wolf. His warriors followed. Marcus pushed Vera behind him. Then he changed into a black wolf with silver on him. The two leaders fought. Wolves from both groups fought too. Vera stood still for a moment. Then she picked up a stick. She was ready to fight if she had to. The fight did not last long. Marcus was faster and stronger. He had the mate bond. He pinned Klaus to the ground. His jaws were close to Klaus's neck. The Crescent wolves stopped fighting. They did not know what to do. Vera yelled "Enough! Stop!!" Both sides stopped fighting. They were breathing hard. Marcus changed back into a human. He had blood on his chest and arms. He kept one hand on Klaus's wolf. He was ready to end it. Vera walked forward. She looked at her father. "It's over Father. The truth is out. You killed Mother. You started this war for greed. I won't let you hurt people." Klaus changed back into a human. He was breathing hard. He was angry and sad. "You choose him? The enemy?" Vera looked at Marcus. She turned back to Klaus. "I choose the truth… I choose my mate." Tyler looked down. He accepted what was happening. Some of the Crescent warriors did the same. They realized what Klaus had done. Kane stood frozen, stunned as he realized Vera had finally accepted him as her mate. Klaus was taken by his people. He was not killed. He was not the leader anymore. The war was over before it really started. That night Vera was in Marcus's cabin. It was deep in Shadow territory. She was looking at the moon. Marcus came up behind her. He put his arms around her waist. His chest was warm and strong. He kissed her neck slowly and gently. "You were amazing today, " he said. "You were strong and brave. You are mine. Forever." Vera leaned back into him. She smiled a little. "I am still mad at you for capturing me." Marcus laughed softly. "You can be mad as long as you stay with me." She turned around. Her eyes met his. The pull between them was not bad anymore. It was home. "I'm scared, " she said quietly. "Everything I knew is gone." "You're not alone, " Marcus said. "You have me and I have you. The Moon got one thing right." He kissed her. It was slow and deep. Vera melted into it. Her hands went up his chest. They kissed some more. When they stopped, they were both breathing hard. Marcus put his forehead on hers. "Tonight?" he asked. Vera bit her lip. Then cut in “Tonight, what?” Marcus picked her up, and a soft laugh slipped from her lips. He took her to the bed. They took their clothes off slowly. They kissed some more. The mate bond was singing. Later they were lying in the sheets. Marcus bit her neck. It hurt a little but was nice. Vera smiled. "I still hate that you took me." Marcus laughed softly. "I still love that you fought me." Outside the moon was shining. It was over both territories. They were not divided anymore. They were connected by something strong. Vera was home. Not in Crescent. Not in Shadow. With him - mated to the Alpha.
