SOPHIA’S POV The first official study session after Ethan and I admitted our feelings was awkward. We sat across from each other at the library table, our notebooks open, but neither of us was looking at them. "So," Ethan said, clearing his throat. "Should we talk about... this?" "About what?" I asked, even though I knew exactly what he meant. "About us. About what happened on the phone last night." I felt my face flush. "We don't have to talk about it." "Sophia, we said we have feelings for each other. We can't just ignore that." "I know." I stared at my hands, suddenly fascinated by my own fingers. "I just don't know what to do about it. We're from rival schools. If anyone finds out..." "I know," Ethan said. "Trust me, I know. But I don't want to pretend like nothing happened." I looked up at him, and the vulnerability in his eyes made my heart ache. "What do you want to do?" Ethan reached across the table and took my hand. "I want to be with you. I know it's complicated, and I know it's risky, but I don't care. I've never felt this way about anyone before." "Neither have I," I admitted. We sat there for a long moment, just holding hands and looking at each other. Then Ethan leaned forward and kissed me. It was a soft kiss, gentle and sweet, but it sent electricity through my entire body. When we pulled apart, we were both smiling. "Okay," I said. "Let's do this. Let's be together. But we have to keep it a secret." "Agreed." "But we can't let it affect the competition. We still have to win that scholarship." "Agreed." "And we have to be careful. No one can know." "Agreed." I laughed. "You're agreeing to everything I say." "Because everything you're saying makes sense." Ethan squeezed my hand. "I'll do whatever it takes to make this work, Sophia. I promise." --- The next few weeks were a blur of stolen moments and secret glances. We met at the library for our official study sessions, but we also found time to meet elsewhere—at coffee shops, at the park, at a quiet spot behind the school where no one would find us. It was exhausting, keeping our relationship hidden, but it was also exciting. Every touch felt electric, every kiss felt like a rebellion. But it wasn't easy. "You're distracted," Emma said one day at lunch. "You've been distracted for weeks." "I'm just busy with the competition," I said, which was technically true. "You're not just busy. You're... different. Happy. Like you're hiding something." I forced a laugh. "You're imagining things." Emma didn't look convinced, but she let it go. For now. --- The trouble started during a group study session. Our advisors had decided that all the competing pairs should meet together once a week to share strategies and practice for the final competition. It was the first time Ethan and I had been in the same room with other people, and we both knew we had to be careful. But it was hard. Every time Ethan looked at me, I felt my heart skip a beat. Every time he spoke, I hung on his every word. And when he accidentally brushed against me while reaching for a book, I had to bite my lip to keep from gasping. "Sophia, are you okay?" Emma asked. "You look flushed." "I'm fine," I said quickly. "Just a little warm." The session went on for hours, and by the end, I was exhausted from the effort of pretending. I just wanted to go home and call Ethan and talk about everything that had happened. But as I was packing up my things, one of the other Westbrook students, a girl named Jessica, approached me. "So," she said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "I saw you and Ethan Blackwood talking earlier. You two seem... close." My blood ran cold. "We're just study partners." "Really? Because the way he looked at you didn't seem like 'just study partners.'" "I don't know what you're talking about." Jessica smiled, and it was not a nice smile. "I'm just saying, be careful. People talk. And if people find out that a Westbrook girl is dating an Eastgate boy..." She didn't finish the sentence, but she didn't have to. I knew exactly what she meant. --- That night, I called Ethan in a panic. "Someone saw us," I said, my voice shaking. "Jessica. She saw us talking, and she's suspicious." Ethan was quiet for a moment. "What did she say?" "She said people talk. She said if people find out..." "Then we'll be more careful." "Ethan, what if she tells someone? What if she tells my parents?" "Hey," Ethan said, his voice calm and steady. "We're going to be okay. We'll figure this out." "How? How can we figure this out when the whole world is against us?" Ethan paused, and when he spoke again, his voice was gentle but firm. "Sophia, I love you. I know we haven't said that yet, but I do. I love you, and I'm not going to let anyone tear us apart. Not Jessica, not our schools, not anyone." I felt tears prick at my eyes. "I love you too." "Then we'll get through this. Together." I wanted to believe him. I wanted to believe that our love was strong enough to overcome everything. But as I hung up the phone and stared at the ceiling, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were standing on the edge of a cliff, and one wrong move would send us falling. And I was right.
