SOPHIA’S POV It was a Thursday night when everything changed. Ethan and I were studying at the library, but we were both exhausted. The competition was only a few weeks away, and we had been pushing ourselves too hard. "I can't focus anymore," Ethan said, rubbing his eyes. "I think we should call it a night." "No," I said. "We have to finish this practice exam." "Sophia, we've been here for five hours. We need to rest." "I can't rest. I have to win this scholarship." "Why?" Ethan asked, and there was something in his voice that made me stop. "Why is this so important to you?" I hesitated. I had never told anyone the real reason, not even Emma. But something about the way Ethan was looking at me made me want to open up. "My parents," I said finally. "They work so hard, and we still barely have enough. They can't afford to send me to college. The Hamilton Scholarship is my only chance to get out of here, to make something of myself." Ethan reached across the table and took my hand. "I understand. My family is the same. My dad has a record, and my mom is still recovering from her addiction. They can't help me either. This scholarship is my only chance too." We sat there in silence, holding hands, and for the first time, I realized how much we had in common. We were both fighting the same battle, dreaming the same dream. "I'm scared," I admitted. "I'm scared of failing. I'm scared of disappointing my parents. I'm scared of..." I trailed off. "Of what?" "Of losing you." Ethan stood up and walked around the table. He knelt beside my chair and took both of my hands in his. "You're not going to lose me," he said. "Whatever happens, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere." I leaned forward and kissed him, and it was different from all the other kisses we had shared. It was deeper, more desperate. It was a kiss that said everything we couldn't put into words. When we finally pulled apart, we were both breathless. "I love you," I said. "I know we're young, and I know it's complicated, but I love you." "I love you too," Ethan said. "And I promise, whatever happens, we'll face it together." --- But our moment was interrupted by a sound that made my blood run cold: footsteps. I looked up and saw a figure standing at the end of the aisle. It was dark, and I couldn't see who it was, but I could feel their eyes on us. "Who's there?" I called out. The figure stepped forward, and my heart nearly stopped. It was Marcus, Ethan's best friend from Eastgate. He was staring at us with wide eyes, and I knew immediately that he had seen everything. "Ethan," Marcus said, his voice flat. "What are you doing?" Ethan stood up, his face pale. "Marcus, I can explain." "Explain what? Explain why you're kissing a Westbrook girl? Explain why you're dating the enemy?" "She's not the enemy," Ethan said. "She's..." "She's a Westbrook student," Marcus interrupted. "Do you know what will happen if people find out? Do you know what this will do to your reputation? To our school?" "I don't care about my reputation." "Then you should. Because this... this is insane. You're supposed to be focusing on the competition, not falling in love with the wrong girl." I felt like I had been slapped. "The wrong girl?" Marcus looked at me, and there was something almost like pity in his eyes. "I'm sorry. I don't have anything against you personally. But this is a bad idea. You know it is." Before I could respond, Ethan stepped between us. "Marcus, I'm telling you this as your friend: stay out of it. What I do with my personal life is none of your business." "It becomes my business when it could cost us the competition. Do you really think Westbrook and Eastgate will let you compete as a team if they find out you're dating? They'll disqualify you both." Ethan fell silent, and I could see the realization dawning on his face. Marcus was right. If anyone found out about us, it could destroy everything—not just our relationship, but our chances at the scholarship too. "You have to promise me you won't tell anyone," Ethan said finally. Marcus hesitated. "I don't like lying." "Please. Please, Marcus. Just give me some time. Give us some time." Marcus looked at Ethan for a long moment. Then he sighed and nodded. "Fine. I won't say anything. But you need to figure this out, Ethan. And soon." He turned and walked away, leaving us alone in the dark library. --- I sank into a chair, my whole body trembling. "He knows," I whispered. "Marcus knows." "He won't tell anyone," Ethan said, but his voice wasn't as confident as before. "You don't know that. He could change his mind. He could tell everyone." Ethan knelt in front of me and cupped my face in his hands. "Look at me, Sophia." I forced myself to meet his eyes. "I know you're scared. I'm scared too. But we can't let fear control us. We've come too far to give up now." "What do we do?" Ethan took a deep breath. "We keep going. We keep fighting. And we hope that love is enough." I wanted to believe him. But as we walked out of the library together, the weight of our secret pressing down on us, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were running out of time.
