Chapter Three

1195 Words
Almost every where she went Liana was told, “Thank you so much for your interest in our organization, we will file your resume for future reference”. What was I expecting? The manager to say, oh you are right on time, please come for an interview tomorrow, she realized she had been too optimistic. Liana was now exhausted and disheartened, she had already dropped off her resume at more than ten organizations. Just when she was about to call a cab to take her home, she looked across the street and noticed an enormous beautiful building she had never seen as she had never been around that side of the town before. Liana decided to walk in and drop off her resume not because she believed she stood a chance of employment there but she was curious to explore the inside of this beautiful outstanding building. Logan Communications were the letters written on the big billboard in large bold colors. This was a multi-billion dollar company. As she slowly entered she dropped her jaw, she was captivated by the beauty of the place; she couldn't help dreaming of how her life would be like working there. There was an air con at the door step circulating cool fresh air, the place was decorated with expensive huge wall paintings and flower vases. The tiles used on the floor were unique expensive ceramic type and the wooden furniture looked unique and everything there looked expensive and from out of this world. The receptionist greeted her with warmth and kindness. It was part of her job to show kindness to everyone who came to Logan Communications for any purpose. After being directed to the human resources manager's office she wasted no time, she immediately made her way there but she was stopped by a man she came across along the corridor."May I be of help Miss?" he asked, "No! I am heading to the HR’s office and I have been given detailed directions on how to get there but thank you so much for asking, I appreciate that". The man smiled at her, impressed by her beauty and confidence. "I am the H.R and you won’t find me in my office because I’m right here talking to you. I assumed you were heading to my office that’s why I asked you if I may be of help". Liana felt embarrassed, she faced down moving her eyes from left to right as if afraid to clash her eyes with those of the gentleman. "Oh my sincere apologies, I had no idea", she apologized. "No problem Miss just go and wait in my office I will be with you shortly", he instructed. Liana went straight to the office and sat on the comfy guest chair and waited nervously thinking she had already ruined her chances of getting hired. The man believed to be the H.R came in after a few minutes, he, pulled out his chair and sunk into it with his hands clasped together on top of the desk. They formally greeted each other and she stated the reason she was there which led to her handing him her resume. He immediately browsed through it and asked if she was okay with being interviewed right that instant. Liana wasn't expecting that, it was a total surprise and she wasn't ready or prepared for an interview but she knew saying no would make her seem diffident and that was an unappealing characteristic in an applicant. “Absolutely, it’s no problem”, she replied with borrowed confidence. Liana was overwhelmed she couldn't believe it. The questions were the common ones; tell me about yourself, why should I hire you? What are your weaknesses and strengths? Liana gave impressive answers but stammered when she was asked of what she knew about the firm. She was honest about not knowing anything, she stated with confidence that she would do her research and catch on quickly as she was a fast learner. There was complete silence for a brief moment that made Liana twitchy. After what seemed to be the manager’s judicial deliberation moment, he looked at Liana with an expressionless face, it was hard to guess if he was about to announce good or bad news but Liana braced herself for disappointment. “Miss Crawford, how do you feel about joining our team of accountants? Starting net salary is $1000 USD a month plus medical aid and company car. We need someone to start immediately so if you are interested and available we can make arrangements to sign the contract before the end of the day”. Liana couldn't believe her ears, there was no way the manager was offering her a job, not so soon and effortlessly and not at this multi billion dollar exceptional company. There would be looking to hire someone with years of work experience and tons of references from reputable firms and not someone like her, she didn't qualify, she didn't stand a chance. $1000 USD salary and company car, she was definitely day dreaming. Hearing the manager clear his throat to get her attention stopped the zillion thoughts that were floating in her mind. “I’m sorry but I don’t think I heard you correctly”, she was sure he didn't say all those things. The manager chortled, “I will not be repeating myself, I just need an answer from you”, “Oh my God, yes! Yes! I would be honored to work for you and yes I am available to start immediately, I just can’t believe this is happening”. The manager rose from his seat approached Liana to guide her out, she got on her feet and he shook her hand, “welcome on board, I will email you the contract later today, please read it carefully, sign it and bring it with you Monday so we can file it”. Liana was frantic with excitement, “thank you, thank you so much”, she got too excited and carried away she threw herself in the manager’s arms, hugging him. She realized how unprofessional that was and she pulled away, although the manager didn't seem to mind the unprofessional act. He understood it was all excitement. "I’m so sorry, I shouldn't have done that", she apologized facing down, embarrassed to look at him. "Please don’t worry about it Miss Crawford, I will see you at work next week Monday, enjoy the rest of your day", "I sure will, thank you again”. When she was outside and alone she screamed out aloud and danced around in circles. This had turned out to be the best day of her life, Mr. Diamond had asked her out for dinner and she had been hired by the biggest company ever, it couldn't have got any better than that. As soon as she got home she shared the wonderful news with her aunt and cousin and they were ecstatic and thrilled for her.
