Chapter 7: Midnight Research

1023 Words
Deciding she had to do some research, Selam waited until the mansion was quiet. Around midnight, she slipped out of bed and started snooping around. She checked the library first, scanning shelves for books on vampires. Nothing jumped out at her. Next, she tried Kofi's study, hoping to find something there. She searched till she stumbled upon an old, leather-bound book tucked away on a shelf. The cover had no title, but something about it drew her attention. Flipping through the pages, Selam found mentions of "blood bonds" and "protectors." It seemed Kofi's protection might be more complicated than she'd thought. The pages whispered of ancient rituals, of vampires and other supernatural creatures such as werewolves and orcs were bound to mortals for reasons beyond protection. Selam's heart raced. What was Kofi's reason? She kept reading, devouring the text. The words blurred together, but one phrase stuck out: "the bond of life and death." What did it mean? Selam's eyes scanned the pages, her mind racing. She was so engrossed that she didn't hear the footsteps outside the study until it was almost too late.Selam quickly hid behind a curtain, heart pounding. The door creaked open, and she held her breath. The room was silent for a moment, then the lights were turned on. She had been using a small torch she always kept in her bag.Selam peeked through a gap in the curtain. It was Tatu, looking around the study. His eyes narrowed, as if sensing something. Selam held her breath, praying she wouldn't be discovered. After what felt like an eternity, Tatu turned and left, closing the door behind her.He left the lights on.Selam let out a sigh of relief. She had been close to getting caught on her first secret investigation. She waited a few more minutes, making sure the coast was clear, then slipped out of the study. She needed to get back to Kofi's room before he realized she was missing. She crept back to her bed, Selam's mind was racing. What was Kofi hiding and what was the true nature of their bond. She lay in bed, her heart still pounding from the close call. She knew she had to be careful, but she couldn't shake the feeling that she was getting closer to the truth. The night wore on, and Selam eventually drifted off to sleep, the leather-bound book's secrets burning in her mind. The next morning, Selam woke up feeling determined. She was going to get answers, no matter what it took. She got out of bed and she noticed a piece of paper on her nightstand. A note was scribbled on it: "Meet me in the garden at dawn. -Kofi" Selam's heart skipped a beat,"What dies Kofi want?"she asked as if the note could reply. She was that confused by the note as Kofi did not strike her as someone who left behind notes with instructions. She looked out the window. The sky was lightening. It was almost dawn. Selam rushed to bath and got dressed quickly. She was curious and felt like she had to rush to the garden before Kofi changed his mind. She wondered if he had noticed her leaving the bed and coming back yesterday in the night. She made her way to the garden, the early morning air crisp and cool. Kofi was waiting by the fountain, looking like he'd been there for a while."Selam," he said, his eyes locking onto hers. Shadows in his eyes,"I need to talk to you about last night,"he continued. Selam's heart skipped a beat. "I don't know what you're talking about," she said, trying to sound nonchalant.Kofi's eyes narrowed. "Don't play dumb, Selam. I know you were in my study. I felt it."Selam's face flushed. She hadn't expected Kofi to know. "Okay, fine. I was curious," she said, trying to brazen it out. "What's the big deal?"Kofi's expression was unreadable. "The big deal is that you're not safe, Selam. There are things you don't understand."Selam's anger flared. "Then tell me, Kofi. Tell me what's going on." Kofi's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, Selam thought she saw something there. Something like...fear?She didn't understand how such an emotion could be found in the eyes of a man like Kofi."I'm trying to protect you, Selam," he said, his voice low. "But you're making it hard." Selam's heart skipped a beat. What was Kofi protecting her from?"I don't understand but how do you expect me to understand when you don't even tell me," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.Kofi's eyes held hers. "I know you don't me, Selam but I'll explain. Can you please just...trust me?" Selam nodded, her mind racing. What was going on?She agreed to trust him but she knew she couldn't trust him.He had a lot of secrets and he was not planning on sharing them anytime soon.Selam found herself already planning on the floor that she will explore in the night time. She was not going to stop her search till she had answers. They stood there, the sun rising behind them."Let us go and get breakfast Aida is probably waiting for us at the table,"Kofi said breaking the silence."She wakes up this early? come to think of it I haven't been seeing her lately.Where has she been?"Selam asked."You noticed?"Kofi asked."Of course I did.Kids grow on you,"she replied. Kofi chuckled and led the way. When they got to the kitchen Aida was not there."Where is she?You said she would be here,"Selam groaned."I wanted you to eat with me and Aida is at my parents' house. Its in this estate.I send her to stay with them because I didn't want her to see you trying to leave," he said and his voice got lower at the last part. It was clear to her that both Aids and Kofi liked having her around.Kofi had also been willing to have a full conversation with her. They had breakfast together and Kofi left for work after telling her that the house is guarded.Selam no longer wanted to escape as knew she was getting closer to the truth. She did not care at what cost she got it.She just had to get the truth on Kofi.
