The air was thick with the scent of old wood.Selam found herself being led to Kofi's bed, his room enveloped in a dim light from a bedside lamp light.."You're staying here with me Selam from now on,"Kofi announced and left her by the bedside.Selam felt him leave and she climbed the bed.Selam's heart skipped a beat as Kofi also climbed the bed from the other side. She was too scared to look at something other than her hands"Why?" she asked, her voice shaking.
"If it's about the kiss . I am sorry if I led you to believe I am a needy woman.I was just very angry and my emotions got the best of me,"Selam apologized not knowing what was expected of her.She had never shared a bed with a man.Daniel was her first boyfriend and he never slept over. Her bed was too small according to him and he lived at his parents' homestead.
When he simply stared at her she was forced to blurt out ,"I am a virgin."Kofi doubted it but the way she had reacted to him was that of fear and different from how she reacted when he kissed. He understood that in her former relationship they had not done much. This meant he could marry her and his family would accept her."Why are you doing all this?",she asked.
Kofi's smile was slow and deliberate. "Because I want to keep you safe. And because I don't want you to leave me."
Selam's mind was reeling. What was he talking about? She tried to get out of bed, but Kofi was beside her in an instant, his hands on her shoulders, holding her down."Don't try to leave, Selam," he whispered, his breath hot against her ear. "You'll only get hurt."
Selam's fear turned to anger. Who was he to trap her like this? She struggled against him, but Kofi was too strong. She lay there, trapped and helpless, Selam realized that Kofi was serious. He was going to keep her here, no matter what. She looked into his eyes, she saw something there, something that made her heart skip a beat. It was a flicker of...hunger?
It was gone in an instant, replaced by Kofi's usual calm demeanor."Get some rest, Selam," he said, his voice soft. "We'll talk in the morning."He said switching their position to cuddling and he was spooning her.Selam nodded, feeling a sense of resignation. She was trapped, and she knew it. Selam spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper. "What are you, Kofi?"
He did not reply so she turned to face him.Kofi's eyes gleamed in the dark, and for a moment, Selam saw something there, something ancient and powerful."I'm the one who's going to keep you safe, Selam," he said, his voice low and husky. "No matter what it takes."The hours ticked by slowly, Selam's mind racing with questions and fears.
What was Kofi? Why was he keeping her here? And what did he mean by "no matter what it takes"?The first light of dawn crept into the room, Selam heard the sound of footsteps outside. Kofi's voice, low and husky, spoke to someone, but Selam couldn't make out who it was.
The door opened, and Kofi walked in, a tray in his hands. "I brought you breakfast, Selam," he said.
Selam's stomach growled, and she realized she was hungry. She sat up, taking the tray from Kofi, and began to eat.She ate while Kofi watched her, his eyes never leaving hers. Selam felt a flutter in her chest, and she knew she was in trouble.Big trouble.
The days turned into weeks, and Selam found herself growing accustomed to Kofi's presence. She still didn't know what he was, but she knew she was trapped, and she had to find a way to escape.Every time she tried, Kofi was there, stopping her. It was as if he knew what she was thinking, what she was planning.Selam was starting to lose hope.
One night, as she lay in bed, Selam heard a faint noise outside. She got out of bed, creeping to the door, and listened. It was Kofi, talking to someone. Selam's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the voice. It was Tatu"...can't keep her here forever, Kofi," Tatu was saying. "She's going to get hurt unless you tell her the truth."
Kofi's voice was harsh. "I know, Tatu but I can't let her go. Not yet."Selam's mind was reeling. What did Tatu know. She listened, her heart racing, as Kofi and Tatu spoke in hushed tones. And then, she heard it. A word, a name, that made her blood run cold.
"Vampire," Tatu whispered. Selam's eyes widened, her heart racing. Vampire? Was that what Kofi was? She felt a wave of fear wash over her, followed by a sense of relief. She knew it. She knew he was something supernatural. But what did that mean for her?She crept back to bed, Selam knew she had to get out of there, and fast. She was trapped with a vampire, and she had no idea what he was capable of.
The shadows in the night seemed to be closing in, and Selam was running out of time. She missed her dog and her grandmother.Fortunately she had left her dog with her neighbor for a night and she was worried her neighbor might leave her dog at the shelter. She wanted to go and get her dog since it seemed Kofi was not letting her go.
That night when he came to sleep she begged him to allow her to get to her apartment to get her dog and clothes.Kofi did not mind having her wear his shirts but Selam was uncomfortable with wearing his clothes.Kofi was adamant that she was not to leave the mansion without him.Selam had no choice but to wait for him to find a day on which he would take her to the apartment.
Selam had vowed that she would find the answers all on her own.The mansion had walls and she placed her trust in the saying walls have ears.If she listened instead of asking she was going to uncover a lot.She was uncertain of how much she could take in if she ever found out Kofi's secrets.
