"What is it?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.Kofi's eyes searched hers. "I want to take you somewhere. It's somewhere safe plus I will be there with you.We need to look for something and I probably won't find it without you.Are you in?"he asked.Selam's instincts screamed at her. "Well,I have to know where we are going before I agreed to anything.Last time I did,I got myself trapped in an old castle-like mansion.Don't blame for having trust issues?"
Kofi's gaze was steady. "Your parents' old home near the city. We need to get something. It will help us find the enemy since you lost your memories from before the fire ,we need to try and get them back."Selam asked with her hand on her hip",What something?"
Kofi's expression was amused, "A journal. Your mother's journal. It might hold clues about the secret."He was only entertaining her questions but he knew if she refused he'd just force her to come with him.He somehow hoped she agreed and came at her own will.
Selam's panicked. She hadn't thought about her parents' things in years. She felt like going there would prove how she had turned her back on what had been her parents' home.Half of the house had been burnt down. The other had broken windows and black chapped paint walls and a strong smell of what she grew up to know was arson.
"Okay," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.Kofi nodded, his eyes relieved. "Let's go."They drove to the old home in silence, the tension thick between them. Selam's mind was a whirlwind of questions, but she couldn't shake the feeling that Kofi was holding something back. She did not get how a journal would help and her mother's at that.
When they arrived at the house, Selam felt a strong pang of nostalgia. It had been years since she'd been back.
Kofi followed her inside, his eyes scanning the room. "Where's the journal?"Selam's mind was blank. "I...I don't know. I haven't been here in years. It could have been burnt in the fire.I don't know"Kofi nodded, his eyes understanding. "Let's look around. Its fire proof it didn't burn."
They searched the house, Selam's heart heavy with memories. She remembered things like where her room was,the swing her father made for and how they were a happy family.Kofi found the journal tucked away in the closet they had hid Selam and the one Kofi had found her in on that night ."They hid it with you in the panic room that night!"Kofi exclaimed."It's just a closet Selam," countered and Kofi simply handed her the journal.
Selam's hands trembled as she opened the journal. The pages were unburnt and the handwriting was familiar. They read the pages in Kofi's Ford Ranger SUV .They discovered a hidden entry. A message, written in code.Kofi decided that they find out what it was from her apartment since it is nearer than Kofi's castle.Selam was yet to ask him if he was of royal blood.
Selam's heart pounded. "What does it mean?"Kofi's eyes narrowed. "I think these are coordinates to a location. It is probably the place where the secret is hidden."
Selam's mind spun so she had to sit on her couch while Kofi paced in her little living room."What secret?"
Kofi's gaze was intense. "The secret of your bloodline, Selam. The one that's got some people thinking it's worth killing for."
They deciphered the code, they realized it led to an abandoned mine on the outskirts of town.Selam's heart pounded. "What are we waiting for? Let's go."She pulled at Kofi but he did not move. She stared at him wondering why he was being unresponsive.
Kofi's expression was grim. "Selam you have to promise me you'll stay here, where it's safe."Selam nodded, relieved. "I promise."She had just been trying to act brave and had no fight in her.Kofi handed her a small phone. "This is a secure line. If anything happens, call me. I'll be back soon."
Selam watched as Kofi left, feeling a mix of emotions. She was worried about him, but she was also determined to uncover the truth. She waited for and at some point her mind wandered back to the journal and the secret it held. What was it about her bloodline that was so important?
Suddenly, Selam heard a knock at the door. It was her neighbor, Mrs. Jenkins.
"Hey, Selam! I heard you're back in town," Mrs. Jenkins said, smiling. "I brought you something. The door man said that this came in for you."Selam took the box and inspected it,"there's no stamps.Did they hand deliver it."Mrs Jenkins chuckled,"oh what I'd give to be young again.I brought Loki and before you apologize I want to tell you he was a good boy,"she said
Selam's eyes widened with excitement as she saw her dog, Loki, wagging his tail behind Mrs. Jenkins."Loki!" Selam exclaimed, hugging the dog tightly.Mrs. Jenkins handed Selam a note. "Oh,one more thing .The door man said a guy named Kofi asked him to give you this. He said it's important."
Selam's heart skipped a beat as she read the note. It was a message from Kofi, telling her to be careful, that the secret was bigger than she thought, and that it involved him too.Selam's mind reeled. What did Kofi mean?"You got some bad news dear?Oh don't be sad some good fortune will find you.Well I gotta go and don't be a stranger Selam,"she said."Yes,Ms Jenkins good night,"she said. The other lady smiled and left.
At the end of the note that the door man claimed was from Kofi read: "For Selam. Trust no one."Selam's heart pounded as her anxiety rose. She opened the box and found a small key and a note with a location. The location was the same abandoned mine that Kofi had gone to.Selam's eyes widened. It was clear that Kofi was walking into a trap.
She thought about ignoring Kofi's warning and following him, but she knew she couldn't. She had promised to stay safe .Selam's mind was a whirlwind of doubts and fears she doubted she could be of any help at the mine and she feared she might be the only help Kofi needed. She paced back and forth in her small living room, Loki watching her with worried eyes.
After what felt like an eternity, Selam made up her mind. She was going to the mine, and she was going to save Kofi.
She grabbed the key and the note, and slipped out of the house, Loki by her side. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the streets as she made her way to the mine in her beat up car.She approached the mine, Selam could feel the tension in the air. Something was off. She could sense it.
She tied Loki to a nearby tree, whispering, "Stay here, boy. I'll be back."Loki whined, but Selam knew he would stay. She could not leave him in the car because the bag guys could get to her dog and best friend.
She approached the mine entrance, her heart pounding in her chest. The entrance was dark, and she couldn't see a thing.Selam took a deep breath, and stepped inside. The darkness swallowed her whole. She made her way deeper into the mine, Selam heard voices. Kofi's voice, and someone else's.
"...can't let you have it, Kofi," the other voice said."It's not yours to take," Kofi replied, his voice cold.
Selam's heart skipped a beat. What was going on?
She crept closer, trying to see what was happening. As she turned a corner, she saw Kofi, surrounded by several men. One of them held a gun to his head. She could not see clearly from her angle if the others also had weapons.Kofi sensed that she was around and they made eye contact. She saw that he had been beaten and had blood on his clothes.Selam gasped, and the men turned to look at her.
Kofi's eyes widened and he did not want them to get her,"Selam, no! Get out!"
Selam thought it was too late to run since the men had already seen her.She decided to hide in the mine and hope one or two got lost in the mine. She ran in the direction she had used to find Kofi. There had been tunnels she just needed them to take one which was not safe.
She quickly removed the sign from an unsafe tunnel and placed it on a safe tunnel and hid. There were two guys after her. They both took the tunnel she had removed the sign from.A couple minutes after they entered the tunnel she heard an explosion. She got out of the tunnel. The explosion had alerted one of the bad guys.
Kofi had struggled against the six men that held him but they were too strong. One of them hit him when the explosion occurred and he fell to the ground pretending to be unconscious. He had not wanted to show off his supernatural abilities since he suspected they were normal humans that had been sent on an errand.
She misled two more guys with the same trick but got caught when she was trying to get back to where Kofi had been.Selam screamed, bit the henchmen's hand and ran towards Kofi. Before she could reach him, everything went black because one of the bad guys had hit her head with the end of a gun.
When Selam woke up, she was in the mine and the bad men appeared dead. Kofi was sitting next to her, his eyes worried."Selam, I'm sorry you got hurt on my watch," he said, his voice low.Selam tried to sit up, but her head was hurting. "What's going on, did we win?" she asked, her voice weak.Kofi took a deep breath. "Yes and I'll explain everything, Selam.First and foremost, we need to get out of here. We're not safe yet."
Selam nodded, trying to process everything and as she looked at Kofi, she knew one thing. She trusted him.It could be Stockholm syndrome but one thing was sure she liked Kofi.It was hard not to especially when he treated her like her lady.
Kofi carried her together, they made their way out of the room the bad guys had kept Kofi. They emerged from the mine, Selam saw Loki by the tree waiting for her. The dog barked and wagged his tail when he saw her.Selam smiled, feeling a sense of relief.A part of her had been scared that the bad guy might have taken her dog.
Kofi released Loki but as they turned to leave, Selam who was on Kofi's back saw something that made her blood run cold. A figure, watching them from the shadows. It was Tatu.Selam's heart skipped a beat she failed to understand what Tatu was doing at the mine and why he had not come to help them.
Tatu made himself known.Kofi greeted him and thanked him.Tatu had taken out the bad guys that had been protecting the outside part of the mine.He had already been at the mine helping Kofi when Selam came.Kofi decided that they all go to Selam's apartment and leave behind her car.She also had to get her personal items such as clothes and her laptop.
Tatu drove Kofi's car whilst Kofi drove Selam's car. They reached her apartment. The doorman was not at the entrance to the apartment building. They took the elevator to her floor. Her door was unlocked and Selam did not remember if she had locked the door when going to rescue Kofi.
", You must really like me, you ran out of here and forgot to even lock the door.Your shoes are also not matching,"Kofi said with a deep chuckle. It mesmerized Selam."How did you know it was a trap anyway?"Tatu asked tired of being the third wheel.
"I got a note that the door man claimed was from Kofi.I also received a mysterious box.It was hand delivered.Did you deliver it Tatu?"Selam responded.Tatu shook his head."What was in the box.I never left a note,"Kofi said.Selam told them about the contents of the note and the box.Kofi's eyes narrowed, his expression grim. "I think it's time we told her, Tatu."
Tatu smiled, her eyes cold. "Yes, Kofi it's time."
