Selam left the breakfast table a little after Kofi left for work. She went to the study at the first floor of the ancient mansion. The appearance of the mansion was somewhat like the Roman castles in her fantasy novels. When she got to the shelf in the room she a candle stand on the wall.Using her imagination and experience from the novels she turned it thinking it would lead to a secret entrance.
Nothing happened and the wall did not open for her.She went to his desk to check the drawers. It was under the desk that she saw an opening with stairs that led down to what looked like a basement.Selam decided to get her torch.Noone would stop her from going down those stairs.
She found the torch in her bag and decided to take Kofi's jacket so that she'd be warm. She also took a couple lunch bars from the kitchen pantry and a water bottle in case she got trapped in the basement. When she came back to the study no one had shut the entrance. She descended the stairs and at some point it hot dark. She used her torch to get through to the very last step.
The basement was built in a way that made it look like a dungeon under the castle it looked like a straight out of Disney castle dungeon. There were many passageways. It was like a labyrinth.A place meant to confuse an intruder.Selam regretted her curiosity but she couldn't turn back she had to find answers. The dungeons were empty and she was glad for that.Imagine getting lost in a place with a notorious criminal or creature.
She was every bit of an explorer. This adventure was hers and as she searched every nook and cranny she felt proud. An hour into her search in the dungeons she realized she was lost and could only hope for someone to notice she had gone underground and look for her.She fell asleep during her wait.
Her dream felt real. She was back at the night of her parents' accident. She was in the fire with them. She heard her mother's scream all over again and started screaming as well in the dream. Its how Kofi found her in the dungeons. He carried her from the dungeons just as she also dreamt of how she got saved from the fire.
He woke her up when he got back to the study that has been her entrance to the underground dungeons.Kofi took a deep breath, his eyes never leaving hers. "Selam, you're in danger. The people who killed your family...they're still out there. They'll stop at nothing to get what they want."Selam's heart pounded. "I remember the police said it was arson and that they had caught the culprit. What do they want? When were they released?"
Kofi's gaze was steady. "They think you have something. Something important."
Selam's mind spun. "What could I possibly have?"Kofi's eyes dropped to the carpeted floor. "I think it has to do with your past, Selam. Your family...they were involved in something big. Something that could change everything and your perspective on life."
Selam's breath caught. "What are you talking about?"Kofi's eyes snapped back to hers. "I'll tell you, Selam. But you have to promise me you'll listen, and you'll trust me."Selam nodded, her heart racing.
"Your family was part of an ancient order," Kofi said, his voice low. "They were guardians, Selam. Guardians of a powerful secret. And now, that secret is in danger."Selam's mind reeled. What secret could be so important?
"What secret?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.Kofi's eyes held hers. "The secret of the bloodline, Selam. Your bloodline.Your parents were killed because they chose to keep the secret to death. The killer thinks you know the secret.Your parents hid you that night and sent a signal to my tribe at the sign of danger"Selam's heart skipped a beat. What did it mean?
Selam listened, her mind racing, as Kofi explained the truth about her family, the secret, and the danger she was in. Selam learned the shocking truth about her past, and the danger that threatened to destroy her future. When they finished talking, Selam felt like she'd been hit by a truck. She needed time to process, to think.
"I'm going for a walk," she said, her voice shaky.Kofi nodded, his eyes concerned. "I'll come with you."Selam shook her head. "No, I need some space."
Kofi's eyes lingered on hers, then he nodded. "Okay. But be careful, Selam. You're not safe yet."Selam nodded, then turned and walked away, her mind reeling with the secrets Kofi had revealed.
Kofi watched as she left.He had only shared the surface of the matter and she reacted this way.He knew he had made a good call by only telling her part of the story to avoid confusing her and driving her to madness. After Selam was just a normal Ethiopian woman who had no exposure to his world and he did not want to drop that on her with little empathy.
Tatu was against Kofi keeping secrets from Selam if he wanted to build a relationship with her.He thought that challenging their barely formed relationship was not a good strategy as it would send her running. He had even sent his child to his parents because he feared she might expose him.Aida was a sweet child but she lacked secrecy and was a live fire cracker.
Selam felt like she was walking through a dream. Nothing made sense, but somehow, it all made sense. She walked for hours, the sun beating down on her, as she tried to process the truth about her past, and the danger that threatened her future. She had always wondered how her relatives did not want her and often called her names when they got the chance. It would be impossible to understand how the firemen found her outside the house and out of harm's way with a few burns. They thought she killed her parents.
The fire had been very traumatizing for Selam that she forgot some of the things that happened during and before that fire. She remembered a couple details when Kofi told her that he had been at the fire , found her in the closet and saved her.
The sun, began to set and Selam made her way back to the mansion, her heart heavy with secrets, and her mind racing with questions. She approached the entrance to the mansion, she saw Kofi waiting for her, his eyes concerned.
"Selam, I've been looking for you," he said, his voice low. "We need to talk."
Selam nodded, her heart sinking. What now?
