Chapter 4 : The Little Matchmaker

1002 Words
Selam groggily opened her eyes, her head pounding with the mother of all hangovers. She was in a bed, a soft, plush bed, and she was surrounded by...hair? She blinked, trying to clear her vision, removed some of her hair that was covering her face and that is when she saw her. A little girl, no more than 6 years old, with big brown eyes and a mop of curly hair, staring at her with an intensity that Selam's heart skipped a beat when she remembered the other pair of eyes that were just as intense. The little girl's eyes widened, and she took a step closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "Mama,"she called out. Selam's eyes widened, and she tried to sit up, but her head spun, and she fell back onto the pillows. "No, no, I'm not...I mean, I'm not your mama," she countered. The little girl didn't seem to hear her. She took another step closer, her eyes drinking in Selam's's features. "You came home with my Papa. You have hair like mine you are my mother," she said, her voice full of wonder. Selam tried again, "Listen, sweetie, I think there's been a misunderstanding..." The little girl, who looked eerily like Kofi, shook her head, her curls bouncing. "Papa said you're my new mama. He said you're going to stay with us now." Selam's eyes widened, and she looked around the room, trying to make sense of things. Where was she? And who was this little girl?Just then, the door opened, and Kofi walked in, a tray in his hands. "Ah, you're awake. You drank a little too many last night ," he said, his eyes all over Selam. The little girl ran to him, wrapping her arms around his legs. "Papa, Papa, she's my mama! You said so!" Kofi smiled, his eyes meeting Selam's, and she felt a jolt of electricity run through her. "I did, didn't I?" he said, his voice was low and husky.Selam's eyes narrowed, and she tried to sit up, but her head was still spinning. "What did you do, Kofi?" she whispered.Kofi just smiled, setting the tray down on the bed. "I brought you home Selam. You're going to stay here with me...and my daughter. Selam's eyes widened, and she looked at the little girl, who was watching her with an expectant gaze. What had she gotten herself into? The little girl, seemingly satisfied with Selam's silence, climbed onto the bed and snuggled up beside her. "I'm Aida," she said, her voice muffled by Selam's side.Selam sighed, deciding to play along, "I'm Selam, nice to meet you, Aida." Kofi watched them, a warm smile spreading across his face. "I think this is going to be a very interesting Christmas," he said and Selam stared at him with her arms extended asking nonverbally why he was doing all this.He simply shrugged.Aida started chattering excitedly about Christmas, telling Selam all about the presents she wanted and the food she loved. Selam listened, trying to keep up, but her mind was racing. What was going on? Why had Kofi brought her here? And what did he mean by "staying here"? Selam's gaze wandered around the room, taking in the decorations and the furniture. It was a beautiful room, warm and inviting, with a big window that let in plenty of light. She saw pictures of Aida and Kofi on the walls, and a few of a woman who looked like she had passed away.Kofi noticed her gaze and smiled. "That's Aida's mother," he said, his voice soft. "She passed away a few years ago." Selam's heart went out to Aida, and she pulled the little girl into a hug. "I'm sorry, sweetie," she whispered.Selam hugged her back, and for a moment, Selam just forgot about everything else. She just held the little girl, feeling a sense of peace she had not felt in a long time. She looked up at Kofi, she knew she could not stay here forever. She had to get back to her own life, her own world. Kofi's eyes met hers, and she saw something there, something that made her heart skip a beat. "You cannot leave, Selam,"he said, his voice low. "Not yet. Not until you understand."Understand what? Selam's mind was racing, but before she could ask, Aida started tugging on her hand. "Come on, Mama, let's get breakfast!" Selam looked at Kofi, unsure, but he just smiled and nodded. "Go ahead, I will join you in a minute." Selam hesitated, then got out of bed, Aida leading her to the kitchen. As they walked, she took in the house, trying to make sense of everything. It was a beautiful place, warm and welcoming, but she knew she did not not belong here. Or did she? As they sat down to a delicious breakfast,Selamcouldn't shake the feeling that she was being pulled into something bigger than herself. Something that involved Kofi, Aida, and a world she did not understand. She was not sure she wanted to resist. The rest of the day was a blur of activity, with Aida showing Selam around the house and introducing her to the other members of their "family". There was Nene, the housekeeper, who fussed over Selma made sure she had everything she needed. There was also Tatu, Kofi's second-in-command, who nodded at her respectfully but didn't say much. As the day drew to a close, Selam found herself exhausted but happy. She had not felt this way in a long time, and it scared her. As she lay in bed that night, Aida snuggled up beside her.The little girl was clingy and seemed to have loved Selam at first sight.Selam was fortunate that loved children. She could not help but wonder what the future held. She knew she was not going to find out anytime soon.
