8. A wolf

1106 Words
Lily POV:  I knocked on the High Elders doors and waited to be let in. He was standing by a massive map of North American with pins stuck in it. “You wanted to see me?” I asked. “Yes Lily, how is Max doing?” So that’s what this meeting was about. There go my hopes and dreams. “He is doing just fine; he has trained his wolf and he has been reading up on Elder laws. By the looks of it he will be a good Alpha” I told him what he wanted to hear. There was no such thing as a good Alpha, no such thing as a good wolf. “Good. There will be a gathering of leaders in two days’ time so you might see some new faces around the Palace. Max will need to be there as well as you may know, so you might want to run some names and faces by him so he doesn’t feel uncomfortable”. Great I went from bodyguard to teacher to a shrink? “Will do” I turned and headed towards the door. Before I could open it I saw Lucas in the door frame. What the hell was he doing here? My heart rate just shot through the roof. He was shocked to see me as well, without blinking he was staring at me.  “Aaahh Lucas. Is something the matter?” the High Elder asked. I wanted to leave the room, I  was the one who was getting uncomfortable but I couldn’t move past Lucas in the door and shoving past him would only look rude in front of the High Elder. “I need to cut this short and head home. My brother is coming here and I need to go back”. He avoided looking at me and there was another change in his tone. “I understand. Well, I hope your time with us has been useful. You will be a fine Alpha Lucas, only if more wolves were prepared to take the Oath as you are”. What did he just say? Alpha? Lucas was a wolf? I looked from the High Elder to Lucas who’s eyes met mine again. Full of regret and sadness. I didn’t believe my f*****g luck, out of all the people in the forsaken place I had to meet him. I had to befriend him, a wolf. I took a step back in disbelief and he approached me closer. “Excuse me gentlemen” with that I left the room and Lucas moved out of my way. Within minutes I was running down the hall away from Lucas, away from my feelings and my thoughts. The black eyes appeared in front of me, killer’s eyes, wolf eyes. My mother’s screams filled my head as tears appeared in my eyes. My heart was pumping at 100 miles per hour. There wasn’t such a thing as a nice wolf, a loving wolf and Lucas tricked me into thinking he was one. The way he cared for me, they way he cared for the children. It was all an act to trick me. “Lily?” I heard his voice down the long corridor. Now that I knew he was a wolf, I knew I couldn’t outrun him, he had heightened smell and hearing. But I had my bow and arrow. I ran towards the library where Max was still sitting, I grabbed my weapons and dashed for the next set of doors. Each turn I took I kept on telling myself that I wasn’t running away from him or that I was sacred of him. I knew that if I met him I would kill him. “Lily pleased just wait” he didn’t even sound out of breath. I took a few more turns and ended up going to the cellars, they were filled with wines and old documents that were no longer relevant. “LILY STOP” his voice boomed in the cellar. The voice I longed for, the one that calmed me down and the one that annoyed me the most. I turned around and I saw his eyes turn lighter brown to what they usually were. “YOU’RE A WOLF! A f*****g WOLF LUCAS”I strung my bow and was ready to fire. “WHY? WHY DID YOU LIE LUCAS?” “I never lied Lily. I am a trainee, my older brother is the Alpha but I’m starting my own pack, I was here to learn.” He put both of his hands up gesturing he wouldn’t come any closer. “I will kill you Lucas. You deceived me” I didn’t realise that tears were flowing down my cheeks until he looked at them. Lucas didn’t stand a chance against my arrows, I never missed a shot. “I never lied, I was telling the truth” I couldn’t stand it anymore, I felt pain in my body, a pain from the inside. I fired a shot and it pierced his right shoulder. He should have been thankful that it wasn’t dipped in wolfsbane. “You lied!” “About what? That you make me happy ?! That I crave your touch? Your laughter? Lily you are the best thing that has happened to me in New York! f**k it, my life. I hid my wolf from you, for you!” I fired another shot, this time hitting him in the left thigh. He was a strong wolf and pulled them out in an instant. Before I loaded my next arrow I saw his eyes change again. “Wolves are the most devious and evil creatures to walk this earth. You live to kill and nothing else. You kissed me Lucas! I laughed with you and I smiled with you. You made me forget about my past”. “Just imagine what else could happen if we had more time. Tell me why you’re crying then. If you hated me so much you would only feel anger. But those tears tell me something else, you want me in your life. Please Lily understand” I strung my next arrow and pointed at his heart. “Understand what Lucas?” I asked. “THAT YOU ARE IT FOR ME!” he shouted. His words made me lower the bow but I still fired it, it pierced his left arm. I walked up to him and only had one thing left to say. “Go and find your mate. She will make you happier then I ever made you”.
