14. Face of Fear

Lily POV:

I was surrounded by wolves, the memories of that night came flooding back. I was fine with killing wolves in their normal form but that was too much for me. I thought of his black eyes, the eyes that killed my parents and made me an orphan.

I saw Lucas transform into a dangerous beast, his golden-brown fur was glowing in the sun but his eyes were fixated on me. The wolves had one target and one mission, to take the Daughters out and his wolf was coming towards me.

I held onto the arrow and was ready to fire, I was ready to kill all the wolves but my body wasn’t listening to me. It didn’t move. I was helpless and alone, I couldn’t fight for myself.

I ran into my room and saw Reya asleep on bed, I closed the door behind me and opened all the windows I needed to get some fresh air, I felt like there was no air left to breathe. I put my hand on my chest to steady my breathing but it wasn’t working, I felt my heart pounding at top speed.

Why would Mother send me to  a wolf’s territory knowing my past? She either wanted to hurt me or she hated me.

I heard soft knocking on my door, but I didn’t want anyone to see me. Lucas said that these rooms were soundproof so no one knew I was here, no one would hear my sobbing. The knocking repeated after a while but I hid in the corner keeping my knees close to myself.

I heard the door opening slowly but I kept my face hidden in my hands. I didn’t want to see anyone and I didn’t want anyone to see me. The door was closed again and I heard footsteps approaching me.

“Lily?” I heard Lucas’ soft voice.

“GET AWAY FROM ME!” I screamed. “PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE!”

“NO!” his voice shook the whole room making my heart nearly stop. “Lily listen you’re having a panic attack” He grabbed my shoulders and lifted me up so I was standing up against the wall. “You need to calm down”

“YOU'RE HERE! IT’S YOUR FAULT!”.

“I’m sorry if I sacred you I just need you to take deep breaths. I promise you I won’t hurt you or I won’t shift”.

He went to sit on the bed and started stroking Reya, who was in seventh heaven.

“Lucas you need to leave!” I said a bit quieter.

“That’s where you are wrong. You came here to protect our world, even though I know you hate it, you despise it. But no one is protecting you so I will stay here until you calm down. I don’t know what happened out there but you don’t hate wolves do you? You’re scared of them”.

I laughed at his remark, but the dark eyes kept appearing in front of me, I slid back down the wall and kept my knees towards me. After what seemed like forever I opened my eyes and saw Lucas still on my bed playing with Reya.

“Want to tell me what happened?”

“You turned! I simply said.

“That was Steelix and I promise you he didn’t want to hurt you, he wanted to meet you. He can see how attracted I am to you, whenever you touch me what effect it has on me and how mesmerised I am. He just wanted you to meet him. I’m sorry”.

“He’s a wolf, he was going to kill me”.

“Lily you were there, Kilian ordered us to “Tap” you on your spines, Steelix can’t disobey his Alpha. Steelix would never hurt you…. Is that what happened? Lily has a wolf hurt you?”

I never told anyone what happened to my family, just Mother. The way Lucas looked at me it was obvious he wasn’t going to judge me he wanted to know more about me. Was I ready to open up to him? To tell him my biggest secret.

“Yes” I wasn’t ready to tell him more.

“I don’t want you to be scared of me. Lily when the war starts you will be surrounded by wolves. Can I please show you Steelix?” my heart started pounding again.

“NO”

Lucas walked to the other side of my bed and grabbed the blade that was hidden under my pillow.

“I Lucas Castor swear that I will not hurt you when I shift. My wolf agreed to this Oath” Lucas cut his palm and showed it to me. “Lily I will die if I break this Oath. Steelix just wants to meet you. I am not a wolf that is going to hurt you” I couldn’t believe what he has just done. Reya let out a whimper which shocked us both.

I didn’t say anything, just nodded my head.

In a matter of seconds, Lucas’ sculpted body turned into a great wolf. I backed up against the wall and I was ready to die, but he wolf just sat on the floor in front of me. His tail was wagging and I noticed his eyes changing colour. It was clear that Lucas was still in control of his wolf, telling him what to do. After a while my heart started to calm down and my body relaxed if this was a battle field I think I would be ready to fire an arrow.

The wolf in front of me started whimpering and laid his head next to my foot. He was getting impatient and tried creeping closer to my body.

“S..s… Steelix?” I finally said his name. His head jerked up and next thing I knew I felt harsh, hot, and wet tongue on my face. I was used to it as Reya would always wake me up like that whenever she wanted to go for a walk. He sat closer and started panting next to me. “Steelix” I said more confidently. He started clawing my legs and I finally put my knees down, extending my legs in front of me. Steelix laid his heavy head on my legs and I next thing I knew I was stroking his head.

After about 10 minutes Steelix walked back to the bed and grabbed the throw in his mouth, in an instant Luca’s body appeared in front of me. I diverted my sight and looked down at my hands in front of me. He wrapped himself in the throw and I saw his hands on mine.

“Hey” he sat in front of me on the floor.

“Hi” I replied.

“Thank you for that, if you could hear Steelix in my head right now. He absolutely loves you; he will never hurt you I promise.” He held my hand and squeezed it slightly.

“He loves me?” I laughed sarcastically.

“Why wouldn’t he?”

“Lucas you’re a wolf, you have an animalistic instinct…”

“But I’m also a human, who knows what is right and wrong. Hurting you would be the worst thing I can imagine. Lily tell me what happened.”

“When I was four, a black wolf killed my parents and nearly killed me. I ran away and Mother picked me up on the streets of New York. I have always been given the missions to kill disgusting wolvers, the rapists, murderers, thieves and rogues”.

“I spoke to Kilian about your order. It’s the Alphas and the Elders who set those missions. We know that there are bad wolves but we are protecting our world from them. There are good wolves out here, Steelix is one of them”

His hands made their way to my face and I felt his warm thumb on my cheeky, whipping my tear away.

“I will protect you Lily, just let me”

“Okay”
