“Claude?” Daniel called through her door. It was just after lunch.
She froze. What is Danny doing here?
She got up from her bed and waited until he opened the door. Daniel unlocked and then opened the door. He had her lunch in tow, leaving it on her table. She walked over and took its contents out. Today was corned beef with tomato, rice, and a side of tomato mixed with hard-boiled eggs. She had that before. Her mouth watered.
“Hey Danny,” she said as she opened up the container.
“I brought dessert,” he offered another bag. It looked greasy but felt warm. She accepted the bag and opened it. It was a bag full of beignets covered in powdered sugar with some Nutella on the side. Her eyes widened and she smiled. Beignets were easily one of her favourite sweet treats.
“Have one,” she offered, forgetting about her dinner. She often liked starting with dessert. Bailey’s fault, probably. He reached into the bag and ate one. His mouth covered in powdered sugar, he sighed. He said something that was inaudible to her.
“Can I mufdlhg?” he tried to say. She laughed at him, powder flying out of her mouth. She coughed and cleared her throat.
“Can you what?” She giggled. He laughed as he held up his index finger indicating to her to give him a moment. She offered up bottled water, courtesy of the little mini-fridge Daniel had brought her. That was completely a gift from him, not Bailey.
He opened the bottle, took a sip, and cleared his throat, running his tongue along the front of his teeth to get out any excess beignet.
“Can I ask you something?” he clarified, smiling. He enjoyed his visits with Claude. She was like the big sister he always wanted. He was the youngest of three boys but was the only son to serve as an Elite. His older brothers were warriors, his father was an Elite like him. He got his agility, strength, and ability to fight from his father. He got all of his father’s good wolf genes, whereas his brothers only possessed one. His eldest was agile, while his middle brother got the ability to fight. Agility was a straight gift, but the ability to fight well was also a gift. Any wolf could learn how, but whether they were amazing at it was a complete and utter gift. He also didn’t have any females he was really close with, most just wanted to get him into their beds.
“Sure,” she said through a mouthful of a beignet. She pulled out her third piece. He glanced at her, and then her belly. “What? The pup is hungry, not me!” she insisted, as she shoved the whole piece into her pie hole. He burst out laughing.
“Okay, but seriously, I need advice,” he continued, out of breath, smiling so hard his cheeks were hurting. He missed his ‘big sister’. She nodded as she chewed her beignet.
“So, I f****d up. Big.” Daniel began, dropping the light laughter and pacing her cell. “I think I met my mate at this new bar I went to. I was flirting with another she-wolf and then I saw her. I went to her and we chatted for a bit, then we headed back to the main area where everyone was. I woke up this morning next to a she-wolf, and we had slept together. I must have taken her home with me last night. Apparently, the she-wolf knows my mate and they are best friends.”
She sucked in her breath while her eyes widened. She paused before speaking.
“Let me see if I understand this correctly,” she replied. “You went to a bar, flirted with a she-wolf, then found someone who you suspect is your mate, chatted with her, then went back to where the crowd was, presumably flirted with the initial she-wolf with your mate watching, and then ended up taking the object of your flirtation home to have s*x with. Have I got it all, correct?”
“Um…” he said, his voice higher-pitched than usual. “I brought them both home with me, had s*x with the she-wolf while my mate was under the bed.” He rushed.
Her eyes widened with surprise. Did he cheat on his mate in front of her?
“YOU CHEATED ON YOUR MATE?” She hollered at him, stalking over to Daniel. He backed away slowly, though it was hard to do in a solitary jail cell. “DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT DOES TO A WOLF? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW I FELT WHEN MY MATE CHEATED ON ME? HAVE YOU NO REGARD?”
“But” he began, palms up in surrender. “You didn’t let me finish!”
She glowered at him, balling up her fists. She exhaled slowly as she glared at him.
“Continue, then.”
“I felt the mate pull with Sandra, but when I awoke next to Bernadette, I didn’t feel disgusted, I just panicked because I thought about Sandra. Bernadette and I texted after she told us what happened, and I don’t know but I also feel a weird comfortable feeling with her. She even went around my kitchen getting milk and sugar like she had been living with me her entire existence.” He explained.
“Who was with you two?” She questioned.
“Bailey…” he answered softly. She sighed as she walked to her bed and plopped down on it. “What happened, Claude?”
“I broke up with him because the only way for my ex-mate to not feel pain when I’m with him, or for me to not feel pain when my ex-mate is with someone else, is for Lincoln to mark me,” she said, frowning. “It isn’t at all that I don’t want him to mark me. I would do it in a heartbeat!”
“So why won’t you? He’s told me you refuse to,” Daniel asked, plopping down on her bed next to her.
“There’s a few. One, his fated mate could come along, and I wouldn’t be able to handle it if he left me or if he was in pain because he chose me and she leaves him,” she explained holding up one finger.
“Two, my ex….” She continued, holding up a second finger. “My ex is dangerous. If he feels that I’ve permanently severed our bond, he will come and find me. No one ever gets in the way of a mate and his destined.”
“I understand that,” Daniel said. He ran his fingers through his hair. “But you underestimate Bailey and our leaders. Alpha Xander is one of the most ruthless wolves out there. He wouldn’t be our Alpha if he wasn’t, and neither would our pack be as large, as strong as we are. Alpha Xander could handle it, and so could Bailey. Bailey is the top Elite warrior we have. He’s next in line for the Head Warrior position when Alec retires.”
“Maybe so,” she stood up, pacing again. “But I cannot chance that my ex won’t lead the pack to slaughter if I allow Lincoln to mark me. I still care about my old pack, and I know not all of them are bad. Just my ex.”
“When you say lead the pack,” Daniel got up and walked to her. “Do you mean that he is the Alpha?”
She shook her head quickly.
Don’t be so scared to tell him! Claude told her.
I won’t risk it, Claude.
Are you a wolf or a cat? Claude retorted. Because all I see is a scaredy-cat!
fuck off, Claude!
“He isn’t anyone but my ex-mate.”
“You should really consider coming out of your cell and allowing us to protect you,” Daniel said gently. “But I get why you’re hiding out here.”
“I will consider it, Danny,” she said as she rested her hands on her belly.
“You’re really showing now,” Daniel said as he gazed at her belly. “You know, Daniel is a classic name, and strong. Same with Daniella.”
“We’ll see,” she laughed, swatting his arm. “I’m not due for another two months. I don’t want to find out the s*x of my pup yet.”
“I was just saying,” he laughed.
“I think you should talk to Bernadette,” she said as she walked him to the door. “I think there’s something more about her that you should keep your mind open. Just a feeling.”
“I suppose,” he said, giving her a quick hug. “I’ll message her a little later.”
He left and closed the door behind him.
It had only been a day and she missed Bailey terribly. She sat at the table and began to eat her lunch. It was a little cold, but more like room temperature. She realised that Daniel had also brought her some parenting magazines. She had been down in the cells for nearly three months now. She knew her pregnancy could last five months, and in all likelihood, that would be the maximum amount of time.
She finished up her lunch and went to use the washroom. The damn pup was sitting on her bladder. She supposed she should be used to it, but her pup felt pretty big for her gestation. At this rate, she should consider sleeping on the toilet, given how many times she uses it a day. She went to the table to retrieve the magazine Daniel had got her.
He’ll make a great uncle to our pup, she said as she flipped through the advertisements.
Best. Uncle. Ever. Claude deadpanned.
He isn’t bad, you know? She chastised her wolf.
Sure, got me there, she countered her human. Cheats on his mate right in front of her. He’s a real winner. A plus, plus in Uncle material.
She ignored her wolf and turned to the article. It was about raising children in separate households.
This should be interesting, she sighed.
