Chapter 4

Ronan’s POV I knew the moment she crossed the border. Not because I saw her. But because I felt her. It hit suddenly—sharp, heavy, and impossible to ignore. My wolf, quiet for years when it came to mates, stirred violently. Mate. The word came with force. Unwanted. I went still where I stood, my grip tightening slightly against the edge of the table in front of me. No. That wasn’t possible. Not now. Not after everything. “Alpha?” Lucian’s voice broke through my thoughts, but I barely heard him. My attention had already shifted beyond the walls of the pack house, toward the outer territory. Toward her. “She’s here,” I said quietly. Lucian frowned slightly. “You can feel that?” I didn’t answer because this wasn’t normal. A mate bond didn’t form from a distance. It didn’t hit like this. It didn’t feel like this. This felt—Wrong. My wolf stirred again. Restless and alert. Mate. “Control yourself,” I muttered under my breath, my jaw tightening. I didn’t want this. I didn't need this, especially not someone like her. I already knew who she was. Or at least, who people said she was. A rejected Luna. A traitor. A woman cast out of her pack and sold like she meant nothing. Weak. Disgraced. She's not someone I would ever accept. And yet, my wolf didn’t care. It pushed forward again, stronger this time. Demanding. Mine. “No,” I said under my breath. Lucian’s gaze sharpened slightly. “Something’s wrong.” “I said I’ll handle it,” I replied coldly. But even as I said it, that feeling grew stronger. Closer. She had entered the main territory. The connection snapped tighter. And for a moment, I felt something else. Something beneath the bond. Something unfamiliar. I straightened slowly, my expression hardening. “What is that…” I murmured. It didn’t feel like a normal wolf. It didn’t feel like anything I had ever encountered before. It felt—Unstable. “Where is she?” I asked. “At the main gate,” Lucian replied. I didn’t wait. I moved fast. The air outside felt heavier the closer I got. Pack members stepped aside immediately, sensing the shift in my mood. Something was wrong. Not just the bond. Her. The closer I got, the clearer it became. Her presence—It didn’t feel weak, it didn’t feel broken. It felt… contained. Like something was being held back. That alone was enough to put me on edge. I stepped into the courtyard just as the carriage came to a stop. The door hadn’t opened yet, but I could already feel it. The bond tightened sharply. My wolf surged forward. Mate. I clenched my fists. “No.” The door opened and then I saw her. For a moment—Everything went quiet. She didn’t look like what I expected. Not broken. Not desperate. Not even angry. She looked… empty, but not weak. There was a difference. Her dark hair fell loosely around her shoulders, her face pale but composed. Even after everything she had been through—She stood steady. That didn’t make sense. This is the woman they said betrayed her Alpha? My wolf didn’t hesitate. Mine. The word hit harder this time. Demanding and claiming. I ignored it. She stepped down from the carriage slowly. And then—Her eyes met mine. The bond snapped into place violently. It hit like fire. Sharp, deep and unavoidable. I felt it everywhere. My chest. My veins. My mind. Pulling me toward her whether I wanted it or not. She felt it too. I saw it in the way her body stilled and the way her breath caught. For a second—Neither of us moved. Then I stepped forward. “You’re in my territory now,” I said, my voice cold. She didn’t look away. “I know.” She responded. No fear. That irritated me. “Do you understand what that means?” I asked. A small pause. Then—“Yes.” Her voice didn’t shake and didn’t break. I studied her more closely. No trembling. No pleading. Nothing. That wasn’t normal. But it didn’t change anything. “You are not my Luna,” I said flatly. A flicker passed through her eyes, and disappeared just as quickly. “I didn’t ask to be.” she replied. That caught me off guard. For a moment, I just looked at her. Most would beg and try to hold onto the bond. She didn’t. Instead, she stood there like she didn’t care whether I accepted her or not. My wolf growled. She’s ours. “No,” I snapped internally. I turned away. “She will be given a place to stay,” I said to Lucian. “Nothing more.” “Alpha—?” “I said nothing more.” I wasn’t going to entertain this. Not with her. Not with someone like her. Behind me, I could feel her presence… Quiet, still and watching. Why isn’t she reacting? That question lingered longer than it should have. “Stay out of my way,” I added without turning. “And I’ll stay out of yours.” A pause. “Understood.” she said. I walked away, I didn’t look back, but the bond didn’t let me ignore her. I stepped inside the pack house, tension following me like a shadow. “She’s not normal,” Lucian said quietly. “I don’t care.” “You should.” I stopped, then turned slowly. “Explain.” He hesitated. “Her scent,” he said. “It’s… different.” I narrowed my eyes. “I noticed.” “And you’re just going to ignore that?” “Yes.” Because I didn’t want complications, I didn't want questions. I didn't want her. I turned away again. But then—The bond surged hard. I stopped mid-step, that wasn’t normal, that wasn’t connection. It felt like—Heat. My expression darkened. It came again stronger from her. My wolf went completely still. Listening and watching. That’s not normal. I didn’t respond, but I felt it. Something was happening, something I didn’t understand. I turned sharply toward the guest wing, toward her. The air shifted as I moved heavily, charged, and dangerous. I reached her door, and stopped. The feeling spiked suddenly and sharp. My hand hovered over the door for a second. Then—I pushed it open and froze. The room was untouched, silent and empty. There was no sign of struggle, no sign of anything, but the feeling...It was still there, stronger than ever. My eyes darkened slowly, she was here. I could feel her. But something about it was wrong, very wrong. A soft voice echoed behind me. Not hers. Not anyone’s. It was cold and ancient. “You shouldn’t have accepted her into your territory, Alpha…” I turned sharply, but no one was there. And suddenly, the bond pulsed once. Then suddenly, it went completely silent.
