“She said not to open it with Mac present,” Daniel said. “Those were her exact words.” Cloe looked at the envelope on the table between them. White. Sealed. Her name written on the front in handwriting she did not recognise. Not Sandra’s. Someone else had addressed it. “Did she say why,” Cloe said. “No.” Daniel’s voice was careful. “She just said it was something you deserved to know. Her words. Deserved.” He paused. “I don’t know what’s in it. She didn’t show me. She handed it to me this morning outside this building and told me to give it to you today.” Cloe looked at the envelope. Sandra had sat in Mac’s office this morning and listened to everything he had to say and then walked out and called a journalist and sent him an envelope addressed to Cloe with instructions not to open it
