“He’s at Dave’s school,” Cloe said. “Right now.” Mac was already driving before she finished the sentence. He did not ask questions. He did not suggest she call the school back or wait for more information. He just pulled out of the parking space and drove and she sat beside him with her phone in both hands and her heart doing something she refused to let reach her face.
