The next day, Amelia arrived at the office with a new sense of duty, set to continue her workload of investigations and research into Alexander. She found Carter already waiting for her in the office with a cup of coffee in his hands.
"Morning. " He greeted her with a soft smile, extending the cup of coffee towards her. "I reckon you might need this. "
"Thanks, " she gratefully said, accepting the cup of coffee. "You always know my kind of taste, " she said, taking a long sip.
As they settled into their respective chairs, the mood in the office was filled with the anticipation of new discoveries. They both knew the coming days would be filled with difficulties, but they were set on facing them.
"So, I've been doing some personal digging, and I may have found some valuable information. " Carter said, breaking through the silence.
She leaned in forward to find out more about what he found. "What is it? "
He opened his laptop and pulled up a document, displaying it for her to see. "It's a set of documented financial transactions for companies, " he explained. "I noticed some transactions made by the Sterling company and there seems to be some deviations in the numbers. So it got me thinking, what if Alexander is using his company to launder money? "
Her eyes widened in shock as she looked at the document. The numbers before her were spinning in an overwhelming collection of columns and figures. If what Carter was insinuating was true, it could mean that Alexander was involved in illegal activities.
"But how can we be sure? We need solid proof if we're going to take this to the authorities. " She asked, her voice filled with doubt.
He nodded in agreement. "I know. That's why I think we should plunge deeper. If we could find traces of any transaction behind their company, we might be able to pull it off. "
Amelia's mind raced with possibilities as she thought about his proposal. It was risky, no doubt about that, but if they were to be successful, it could be the pull they needed to expose Alexander's real intentions.
"Alright, let's do it. But we need to be careful, we can't afford to make any mistakes about being noticed. " She finally said, her voice firm.
He nodded in agreement, a determined spark in his eyes. "Noted. We'll proceed with caution and make sure to investigate every single detail. "
With their agenda starting out, they went impulsively into the investigation, searching every available resource for any piece of evidence that could find Alexander and his company guilty. Hours turned into days as they worked endlessly, their resolve firm in the face of many obstacles.
But just as they were on the edge of a discovery, a crisis happened. An unexpected blackout put the office into darkness, making their computers unstable.
Amelia cursed under her breath as she tried to restart her laptop, but it was no use. The information they had worked so hard to discover was gone in an instant, lost in the sudden blackout.
Anger boiled within her as she glanced at Carter, who also looked disappointed. It seemed their search had hit an obstacle, and this would cause a delay in their progress.
As they sat in the faintly lit office, a feeling of defeat fell over them, but she wasn't one to give up so quickly. They had come by far to allow any setback to overthrow them.
Determined not to let the setback plunge their spirits, they decided to reorganize and think carefully about their next steps. They gathered their work and went to a nearby café, where they could work in peace and quiet.
Sitting across from each other at a table hidden away in a corner, they sipped their drinks and confirmed their findings. The hum of discussions and the aroma of newly brewed coffee gave them a soothing background to their intense discussion.
"We need to come up with a new plan," Amelia said, breaking through the silence. "We can't rely only on the information we lost in the power outage. We need to find another way to gather proof against them. "
Carter nodded in agreement, his brow wrinkled in focus. "I've been thinking the same. I think we should try to get information from other sources. We need to think outside the box if we're going to get any truth, " he said.
Her eyes lit up with enthusiasm as she considered his suggestion. "You're right, we can't keep frustrating ourselves with the same reproach. We need to be resourceful if we're going to succeed. "
They set to work thinking about new ideas. They thought about reaching out to Sterling company's former employees who might have an issue with them before leaving. Or hiring a hacker to hack through the company's servers, and even hiring a private investigator to gather more intel.
As they discussed their choices, a sense of teamwork filled the air, bringing them closer to their common goal. Despite the obstacles they faced, they knew they could only rely on each other for support and guidance.
Time passed quickly as they got ideas of each other, their enthusiasm growing with each new opportunity. But just as they were on the edge of a breakthrough, a familiar voice disrupted their conversation.
"It seems fate always brings us to find each other, Miss Westwood. " Came the smooth voice of Alexander, as he confidently walked up to their table, a smug expression on his face.
Amelia's heart skipped a beat at the sight of him, her instincts telling her to be cautious. She exchanged a cautious gaze with Carter, who stiffened beside her, ready for whatever might come next.
"It seems to be so, Mr. Sterling, " she replied with a stern voice.
He chuckled, unfazed by her animosity. "I couldn't help but overhear your discussion, do you need my help with your research? " He asked in a sarcastic manner.
She strongly reacted to his implication, her jaw clenched in rebellion. "We're just taking cautious paths for any risk that might be of a disadvantage to us. I'm sure it is nothing you need to bother yourself with Mr. Sterling. "
His smile expanded, sending a chill down her back. "Of course, my dear, " he said, his voice filled with sarcasm. "But I would advise you to tread slowly. We wouldn't want you endangering yourself, would we? "
With that sinister caution, he turned and strode away, leaving them to continue with whatever they were unto. As they watched him mix together with the busy crowd, a feeling of insecurity reminded them of the dangers that might catch up to them, dealing with such a mysterious person.
But in spite of the approaching threat of danger, they were unfazed and determined to continue with their investigations. Giving up might plunge their company into deeper trouble.
