CHAPTER 7: THE MOMENT EVERYTHING SHIFTED

745 Words
Emily Argent arrived at the gala alone. The limousine had dropped her off at the private entrance of the Argent Estate before driving away into the city lights again. She hadn’t thought much of it at the time. Pierce Jackson had told her he had “business to handle” and would meet her there. She didn’t question it. Not really. After all, people like him always had things to do. Still, as she stepped out of the car and adjusted her silver gown, she couldn’t ignore the strange tension building in the air. Something felt… off. The moment she walked into the venue, she noticed it immediately. People were staring. Not casual glances. Not polite interest. Full, lingering stares. Whispers followed her like a shadow. “That’s her…” “She arrived alone?” “Why is everyone watching her?” Emily frowned slightly, smoothing her dress as she moved further inside. She was used to attention. As an Argent, she had grown up in rooms like this—wealthy families, political figures, business elites. But this felt different. This wasn’t curiosity. It was shock. Then— “Emily.” A familiar voice broke through her thoughts. She turned. Pierce Jackson was walking toward her. And suddenly, the entire room shifted even more. Silence rippled through the crowd like a wave. Every movement paused. Every conversation died. Emily’s confusion deepened. “Okay,” she muttered under her breath as he reached her. “Why is everyone acting like we just walked into a crime scene?” Pierce stopped beside her. His expression was calm, almost amused. “Probably because we did.” She blinked. “What?” He glanced around the room briefly. Then looked back at her. “This gala is held in my honor.” Emily frowned. “Your honor?” Pierce nodded casually. “And I’m the richest man in the country.” Silence. Emily stared at him. For a full three seconds, her brain refused to process the sentence. Then— “You’re what?” Pierce tilted his head slightly. “The richest man in the country.” Emily let out a short, disbelieving laugh. "You are Pierce Jackson?" He smiled in confirmation “That is not something you just casually say like it’s weather news.” “It’s not weather news,” he replied. Her eyes widened. “Pierce—no, Jackson—why am I only hearing this now?” “I assumed you knew.” “I don’t go around Googling people who almost kill me with their motorcycle." A faint smirk appeared on his lips. “That sounds like a personal limitation.” Emily opened her mouth to respond— Then stopped. Because movement caught her attention. A shift in the crowd. A tightening of space. And suddenly— Her family approached. Richard Argent walked at the front, composed as always, though his expression looked slightly more controlled than usual. Beside him, Evelyn Argent moved with elegant precision. And trailing just half a step behind them… Sophia Argent. Emily immediately felt the temperature drop. “Emily,” her father said sharply as they reached her. His eyes flicked briefly to Pierce. Then froze. “…Mr. Jackson.” Pierce gave a slight nod. “Mr. Argent.” The exchange was calm. But the tension behind it was anything but. Emily frowned. Sophia’s gaze locked onto Pierce instantly. And then to Emily. Her expression tightened. “You’re with him?” she asked slowly. Emily crossed her arms. “Yes. Is there a problem?” Sophia forced a smile. “A problem? No. Just… surprising.” Her eyes lingered on Pierce a second too long. Pierce, however, wasn’t looking at her at all. His attention stayed on Emily. As if the rest of the room didn’t exist. That realization hit Sophia harder than anything else. Richard cleared his throat. “Mr. Jackson,” he said carefully, “we were not expecting you to arrive so informally.” Pierce shrugged slightly. “I arrived exactly as planned.” Emily looked up at him sharply. “You call this planned?” “Yes.” She exhaled through her nose. “I’m going to start charging you for emotional confusion.” A quiet hum of amusement escaped him. But the room around them remained tense. Because everyone else had finally understood one thing. Pierce Jackson had arrived. And he wasn’t alone. He was with Emily Argent. And that changed everything for everyone.
