The grades were to be posted at 9 AM the following morning. Jason and Ricki got up at 7:30, showered, shaved, and walked to the mess. Ricki barely ate though, and Jason could read the anxiousness on his friend’s face. He now wished he had answered some questions incorrectly, or made a simple mistake in operating the computer, but he felt sure he had performed almost perfectly.
At 8:50 the two friends looked across the table at each other, got up without saying a word, and walked over to Petty Officer McDuffy’s office. Only Jason and Ricki awaited their scores. At precisely 0900, the door opened and the ever jovial McDuffy walked out, his hands tucked behind him.
“Bad news guys, I got drunk last night and lost the grades. Everyone will have to take the exam over.”
