That week he drew his first paycheck. It was all he could do to keep from jumping up and down and shouting “YES!” Even after all the different taxes, and other deductions, he still had in his hand a two-week check for $755. That was as much as his mom made in a month.
After working a long shift from 4 PM Friday until 4 AM Saturday, he drove to Fries. He slept until 1 PM. When he woke up, he asked Katy Lynn if he could pick her up at 5 and they could go to Ray’s Starlight Restaurant in Mt. Airy for dinner, then to a movie.
“Wow! Are you serious? I heard that place is super expensive.”
“Yeah, I hear it is too, but nothing’s too good for you,” he said.
