Chapter 4

The soft glow of fairy lights illuminated Olivia's spacious bedroom. Gina had just arrived, flopping onto Olivia's king-sized bed with a dramatic sigh. Olivia swiveled in her desk chair to face her best friend, setting aside some company documents she'd been reviewing. Gina propped herself up on her elbows. "So, did you end up going to that charity gala last week?" Olivia shook her head, a hint of regret in her voice. "No, I got caught up in this mess with the company. Sophia’s been pushing for more control, and Dad's caught in the middle. I couldn't get away." "Oh, Olivia," Gina sympathized. "That sounds rough. But girl, you missed out on some serious gossip!" Olivia's eyebrows raised. "Oh? Do tell." Gina's eyes lit up. "The Sterling heir was there!" "No way," Olivia leaned forward, intrigued. "I thought he never showed up to these things." "Exactly!" Gina exclaimed. "But apparently, he made an appearance. My cousin's friend saw him." Olivia chuckled. "And I bet your cousin's friend couldn't stop talking about him, right?" "You know it," Gina grinned. "She said he's absolutely gorgeous. Tall, dark, handsome - the works. But get this - he barely spoke to anyone!" "Ooh, the strong, silent type," Olivia mused, a small smile playing on her lips. Gina nodded eagerly. "She said he had this intensity about him. Like he was taking everything in but didn't want to be noticed himself." Olivia leaned back, considering this. "I wonder why he's so secretive. I mean, he's set to inherit the biggest automotive empires in the country. You'd think he'd be more... visible." Gina shrugged. "That's the mystery, isn't it? No one knows anything about him. Where he studied, what he does, nothing! Except that he’s very single. It's like he appeared out of thin air." Olivia smiled wryly. "Sometimes anonymity sounds pretty appealing, to be honest. Especially with all these drama concerning the company succession" "Oh, come on," Gina teased. "You can't tell me you're not even a little curious. Half the girls I know are dying to meet him. Can you imagine being the one to finally get to know the real him?" Olivia laughed. "You sound pretty interested yourself, Gina." Here's an improved version of the text, enhancing clarity, flow, and character development: Gina's cheeks flushed slightly. "Well, can you blame me? Handsome, wealthy, mysterious... Speaking of company successions, when are you planning on getting married? Or do you want Sophia to beat you to it?" Olivia sat up, alarm in her voice. "Getting married? What are you talking about?" "You mean you don't know about the secret rule I overheard Sophia discussing?" Gina asked, her tone turning serious. "Secret rule? What secret rule?" Olivia leaned forward, her interest piqued. Gina lowered her voice conspiratorially. "While coming up here, I overheard Sophia talking about getting married to secure the CEO position." "What?!" Olivia exclaimed, shock written all over her face. "Yes, I didn't catch everything, but she mentioned a secret rule your dad made about handing over the company to the first one who gets married." "Oh my God!" Olivia stood up slowly, hands over her mouth. "I can't believe this is happening." "You really didn't know about this?" Gina asked, incredulous. "I'm too shocked for words right now." Olivia paced her room, mind racing. "Do you think your father told her about it and exempted you on purpose?" Gina suggested. Olivia shook her head. "No, I don't think so. Dad might be conflicted about endorsing me because he doesn't want to break up the family, but I doubt he'd betray me like this." "Then how is Sophia aware of this and you're not?" Gina mused. Suddenly, Olivia stopped in her tracks. "It's Angie!" she said, sitting back down. "Father doesn't do anything without running it by her first." "Angie? Sophia's mom? Wow... Sophia clearly has an advantage over you," Gina said, throwing her hands up. "I'm sure father told Angie about his plans, and Angie told Sophia so they can both have the company and probably push me out someday," Olivia said, her eyes widening with realization. "That can't happen, Olivia," Gina reassured, grasping her friend's hands. "No, I won't let it happen," Olivia said, determination replacing worry. "Did Sophia see you eavesdropping?" "No, she didn't. I heard her behind closed doors. Besides, I wasn't eavesdropping, that girl is just so damn loud," Gina said with a smirk. "Perfect! I need to come up with a plan," Olivia said, standing up. She walked to her bedroom window, deep in thought. Leaning against the cool windowsill, she gazed out, her mind racing. If Sophia thought she was the only one aware of this secret rule, she might take her time looking for the most eligible bachelor in town. Sophia was particular about the people she associated with, and with her looks and figure, including her social status, she could have anyone she wanted in no time. Olivia groaned, cursing herself for not socializing more or going on dates. A boyfriend would've been helpful right now. Then she understood the reason for her father's secret rule - she and Sophia had been so focused on the company, always competing, that they'd forgotten what it was like to actually date. Her last serious relationship was seven years ago in college, and Sophia's was five years ago. She had to beat Sophia to it by any means necessary. She carefully considered the men she knew, trying to remember anyone interested in a serious relationship or who had caught her attention lately. After some deliberation, one person came to mind. She couldn't believe what she was about to do, but she had to give it a try. Turning to Gina, she announced, "I need to service my car." Grabbing one of her car keys, she headed out, leaving Gina bewildered.
