Thunder growled across the sky, Katrina looked up, her throat tightening as she stood in front of the Holloway’s mansion. The gigantic house that her mother had pleaded with her to move into but she had refused.
She was happy that her Mum found her happiness but she couldn’t bear the rumors and whacking tongues of others.
Katrina walked into the building, luckily, the house manager buzzed her in and she approached the living room.
The house seemed in a bit of disarray, Jennifer Holloway was barking orders to the housekeepers and few things were being moved.
It seemed as soon as Morris died, she had moved back into the mansion and taken over.
When Jennifer sighted Katrina , her already frowned face, squeezed harder. She left the housekeeper she was about to scold and walked to her.
“How dare you walk in here? How on earth did you get in?” Jennifer bellowed.
Katrina ’s breath seized for a moment, she clenched her hands and slowly went down on her knees.
Her mother’s life was hanging on the line. She had no place to get the money for her treatment.
“I know you despise me and I understand why, but I have no one else to turn to. You are the only one who can help me with the money for my mother’s treatment” she begged with her hands clutched together.
Jennifer looked down with a scornful face.
“That prostitute deserves to die for ruining my home” she spat.
“You and mother must have thought you would steal my son’s inheritance but now, you won’t even get a dime” she affirmed.
Katrina bit her lips, not wanting the tears that were already piled in her eyes to fall. She cannot falter now.
The house deposit and her tuition fees were not even half the amount needed. “I’m not trying to take anything, I just need money for my mother’s surgery. I promise to disappear with my mother after this. Please save her” she pleaded again.
But Jennifer wasn’t the slightest move. After all, she had wanted to get rid of her for a long time. Rather, her anger was kindled, her irritation level heightened.
“Let her rot!” she spat again and turned to the housekeepers standing by.
“Get this trash out of my sight” she yelled in order.
They all stared at first but hurried to obey the order and one of them grabbed Katrina but she pushed away and rushed to grab Jennifer by her feet.
Tears fell hard from her face this time, no longer hiding it. Her voice rang loudly through the room.
“Please! Please, I’m begging you” her voice shook in desperation, her eyes trembled with horror.
“Do not let my mother die. She’s sorry. I am sorry, please” she pleaded hard on her knees.
But Jennifer kicked her off hard in anger, she fell on her back, her elbow hit the floor hard.
“Get off of you, you pest” she screamed.
She turned angrily at the housekeepers, bellowing at them to get her out. Afraid to be the ones in trouble, they all rushed to Katrina , forcing out of the house while she tried to resist and cried harder.
Katrina was thrown out, the gate slammed against her face. In that instant, the sky roared again and heavy rain started to pour.
In the heavy rainfall, Katrina found her way to the hospital all drenched, her clothes dripping loud.
“I’m so sorry, Doctor. I was trying to get the money” she apologized and hurried to bring out the money in her purse.
She handed it over to the doctor who took it reluctantly. Katrina noticed that and quickly spoke up.
‘I promise to get the rest as soon as I can. Just save my Mum” she pleaded, grabbing his hands.
“Miss. Fisher, the surgery has already been scheduled. You didn’t tell us that you had connections to the Holloway” he said, his face lightened a bit.
Katrina swallowed hard. Of course, that name was enough deposit. But what happens if they find out that her mother was just a mistress and they had been cast out.
Rather, she slowly nodded her head. Soon, her mother was taken to the theatre for the surgery.
She waited for ten hours, watching the red light keenly and praying in her heart that it all went well. Right now, she was homeless and her dream of going to college is over.
All she had was her Mum now.
After waiting for so long, the door opened and the doctor walked out. Katrina rushed quickly to him.
“The surgery went well. The swelling has reduced" he announced.
A heavy weight was lifted off her heart. She gripped her chest as the horror was evaded.
“But we need to pray her brain doesn’t swell again. We need to keep monitoring her and hope she has a strong will to live" he added.
The rush of horror surged in her heart again, it wasn’t over yet. She forced down the hard lump in her throat and nodded weakly.
“Thank you”
The doctor walked away and Katrina fell back to the chair slowly. Her phone rang in her purse and she struggled to pick it up.
The unknown number made her hesitate before picking up.
…
Back in the Holloway’s mansion, Jennifer stood up abruptly, the phone to her ear, she had just received the information that Paula Fisher had managed to survive.
She cut the call angrily and was about to move when Lawyer Callan walked in. A scowl appeared on her face.
“Hello, Callan” she said coldly.
Callan made a brief nod and walked closer, holding his briefcase firmly. “I have an order from Mr. Morris Holloway” he said.
Jennifer furrowed, but then, it came to her. The person who could have saved Katrina ’s mother.
“You saved that wretched woman?” she questioned, furious, her finger pointing accusingly.
Callan moved closer, not the least afraid of her. He was the Holloway lawyer for years now and knows her temper.
“Mr. Holloway gave an instruction before his death, he asked his will to be read before he was finally buried.” Callan informed.
Jennifer’s bold front shook slightly, she clenched her hands a little to hide any anxiety.
“What exactly are you saying?” she demanded.
“Before I can speak, Jace needs to be here” Callan affirmed.
Jennifer wasted no time in calling her son and in fifteen minutes, he arrived at the mansion. He had left two years ago after his father brought Paula to the house.
“Why would you read the will before my father is even buried?” he demanded
“That was your father’s wish” Callan replied.
Jace wanted to argue again but Jennifer stopped him. He was about to be made the owner of the Holloway empire.
“Fine. Let’s get this over with” he said instead.
Callan breathed. “We are waiting for just one more person” he said.
Jennifer squeezed her face. “Who else?” she asked.
In that second, Katrina walked in and Jennifer jerked up from the chair immediately.
Even Jace’s face groaned slightly as his forest green eyes rested on her.
“She’s here" Callan announced and the horror widened on Jennifer’s face.
